New York: [n.p.], [c. 1800]. Other. Framed Broadside, single sheet. In Very Good condition. In a painted wooden frame, with bronze-colored trim and a green cloth mat; wire hanger and label from former seller affixed to the back. Frame shows very light wear, with some very small bumps/scuffs along the edges. Glass is unblemished. The broadside itself is protected under a layer of archival mylar within the frame, and shows some mild age toning and soiling. The left side shows marginal chipping, with a small section of the top left corner cut away. Faintly creased across the center, with some mild, faint wrinkling at the top and bottom edges. Shelved in aisle A. This broadside, written by an anonymous author, addresses the "Electors of the City and County of New-York", presenting arguments against the Federalists and urging voters to support Whig candidates in the elections for the state's senators and assemblymen. This work and others like it helped ensure a Democratic-Republican victory in New York. Prior to 1800, the Federalists controlled the New York State Assembly; the Democratic-Republican campaigning effort, led by Aaron Burr, led to the state's legislature flipping in the spring of 1800, which allowed the Democratic-Republicans to appoint electors who cast all 12 of New York's electoral votes for Jefferson and Burr - ultimately securing Jefferson's victory in the presidential election of 1800. The names of the Whig candidates supported by the author are listed at the bottom of the broadside, including Aaron Burr and other notable Democratic-Republicans, such as DeWitt Clinton and Henry Rutgers. 1410741. Hunter is the highlight of this 1874 annual report. Hunter encourages efforts to record the heroic southern experience in the Civil War. "We have helped to make this history; let us see that it be truthfully written. For woe to the people who leave it to their conquerors to write the history of the contest." For example, he derides the claims by Grant's admirers of a great victory over Lee at Appomattox when Lee "had but 42,000 men, as a distinguished member of this body assures me he had it from his own lips, in opposition to 220,000 under Grant." CONDITION: Near good, insect damage at upper left corner, but no loss of text; small ink stamp at upper right corner of front wrapper; bumped upper right corner of back wrapper, vertical crease through entire pamphlet, early ownership inscription in ink at top of front wrapper, another in pencil on inside cover, perforated library stamp on title page.
