Modest wear along folds, a couple of small separations at crossfolds, light marginal toning. Wrappers with minor spine and edge wear. An extremely rare map of "Lemkovina," the homeland of the Lemko, an Eastern Slavic people from the Central Carpathian Mountains (where Poland, Slovakia and Ukraine meet in the present day). From the late-19th century to the 1920s, tens of thousands of Lemkos immigrated to the Unites States and Canada -- fleeing war, oppression and seeking better economic opportunities. Once in the United States, Lemko intellectuals founded institutions to preserve and promote Lemko culture in the New World and to lobby for sovereignty of the Lemko homeland. The present large-format map is an intriguing artifact of the Lemko-American immigrant experience. The map was drafted by the Lemko-American activist Dmitriy Vislocky and published by the Lemko Press in Philadelphia in 1929; it showcases the areas where the Lemko population prevailed, as well as areas of mixed Lemko-Slovakian and Lemko-Polish demographics; while it does not explicitly define Lemkovina as a sovereign state, its rhetorical direction is nevertheless clear. The Lemko are an Eastern Slavic people who originate from a large area along both slopes of the Central Carpathian Mountains, in a region traditionally often referred to as "West Carpatho-Russia," located along the eastern stretch of today's border of Poland and Slovakia, and extending slightly east into Ukraine. The Lemko language is akin to Ukrainian and is written in Cyrillic. Traditionally many consider the Lemkos to be a subgroup of Russians or Ukrainians, although many Lemkos have tended to self-identify as a distinct ethnicity. The Lemkos have vibrant and sophisticated cultural traditions, with distinct music, folklore, clothing and customs. Most Lemkos are Eastern rite or Byzantine-rite Catholics, although some have converted to the Eastern Orthodox faith. The period leading up to, during, and after World War I was traumatic for the Lemkos. The group splintered their loyalties, with some supporting the Russians (both Red and White factions), while others were sympathetic to Ukrainian nationalism, and some (either voluntarily or under coercion) were allied with Austria-Hungary. Lemkos caught on the wrong side of events often met with cruel fates. In the aftermath of the war, Lemkos who supported the Red Russians formed the "Lemko-Rusyn People's Republic" (which existed from December 1918 to March 1920), a state that took in part of the northern slope of the Central Carpathians of Lemkovina. Meanwhile, further to the east was the pro-Ukrainian "Eastern Lemko Republic" (November 1918 to January 24, 1919). However, these republics were soon extinguished, with all Lemkovina being divided between Czechoslovakia and Poland. The Lemkos in Poland would have a very difficult time, as the Polish state considered them disloyal. Eventually they were forcibly displaced from their homeland. Lemkos began to immigrate to the United States and Canada in the late 19th century, in good part due to economic opportunities. The greatest center of activity for Lemko peoples in North America was in Pennsylvania, although large communities could be found across the American Northeast and Midwest, as well as in places such as Toronto, Canada. Many Lemkos found decent jobs, initially in the burgeoning manufacturing industry. Smaller, but still significant Lemko communities developed as far away as Colorado and Alberta, where they were engaged in the ranching and mining industries. Today, hundreds of thousands of North Americans count Lemko ancestry. Lemkos adjusted very well to life across the Atlantic, and generally met with success. The most famous of all Lemko-Americans was the artist Andy Warhol (1928-1987), who was born in Pittsburgh, the son of Lemko immigrant parents. In the 1920s, Lemko intellectuals in America, largely based in Pennsylvania, formed a movement to preserve Lemko culture, while lobbying for the eventual resurrection of an autonomous (if not sovereign) Lemko homeland – Lemkovina. However, there was a great deal of internecine dispute over the nature of this proposed state, as some favored a pro-Ukraine sovereign entity, while others wanted it to be Soviet satellite (yet, the dream of a future sovereign Lemko nation, of any sort, was never to be realized, as powers ranging from the Czechoslovak and Polish governments to Hitler and Stalin would never allow it). Lemko culture flourished in the U.S. and Canada, centered around Lemko halls and churches, and beginning in the 1920s, a handful of small printing presses were established to serve and educate the community, issuing Lemko-language almanacs, primers, newspapers, and pamphlets. One of the most important of these houses was the Lemko Press of Philadelphia, which under the leadership of Dmitriy Vislocky, published the Lemko Gazette. The circle of the Lemko Press had a pronounced Ukrainophone allegiance and was at odds with some other Lemko-North American groups. As a major part of their campaign to define "Lemkovina" and call for its eventual nationhood (presumably as a pro-Ukrainian sovereign state in opposition to both the Soviets and Poland), Dmitriy Vislocky and the Lemko Press produced the present map. As best as we are aware, it is the only large format map of the period to specifically show Lemkovina as a distinct entity, and being published in Philadelphia, it stands as a remarkable feat of Lemko-American immigrant cartography. The large format map, executed to the ample scale of 1:200,000, with text in Cyrillic, and lithographed from a hand-drawn template, shows the Polish-Slovakian frontier region (which today extends east into Ukraine), along the Central Carpathian Mountains, an area traditionally sometimes known as "West Carpatho-Russia." A very rugged and rural area, it is roughly framed by the the Dunajec River in the west, and the San and Uzh Rivers in the east, and with the cities of Nowy S cz, Poland, to the northwest, and Košice, Slovakia, to the southeast. The map delineates all major rivers, roads and railways and locates cities, towns and villages. The legend below the title explains the color-coding employed to define demographic areas. Territory shaded in bold pink are of majority ‘Russian’ [meaning Lemko and Rusyn] population (i.e., core Lemkovina), while the areas covered by southwest-northeast hashed lines are of mixed Lemko/Rusyn-Slovakian population and the areas with northwest-southeast hashed lines are of mixed Lemko/Rusyn-Polish population. Beyond are labeled the lands of Poland (to the north), Slovakia (to the south), Eastern Galicia (to the northeast) and Sub-Karpatsky Russia (Ukraine, to the southwest), while the map defines the Polish-Czechoslovak border as it was then internationally recognized. While the map does not explicitly state that Lemkovina is a country, Dmitriy Vislocky’s sovereignist direction of travel is nevertheless clear. The present map is extremely rare. It was likely issued in only a small print run and the survival rate of such fragile, ephemeral American immigrant publications is very low. We can trace only a single institutional example of the map, held by the David Rumsey Map Collection at Stanford University. Report compiled by District Attorney Asa Keyes following the tragic and catastrophic failure of the St. Francis Dam. The St. Francis Dam was a concrete gravity dam located in the San Francisquito Canyon in northern Los Angeles County, built between 1924 and 1926. Just before midnight on March 17, 1928, the dam failed, killing at least 431 people in the subsequent flood. It is considered one of the worst American civil engineering disasters of the 20th century, and the third-greatest loss of life in California history. In the immediate aftermath of the disaster, officials at all levels began enquiries into the causes. This typescript report, produced within a month of the collapse and flood, was ordered by Keyes as part of his investigations. The text is accompanied by six charts and thirty-six photographic views with captions. Though there were many theories about the cause of the collapse, experts concluded that the failure was due to defective foundation materials, "which, while reasonably hard when dry, became soft and yielding when saturated with water." The dam's failure ended the career of William Mulholland, the general manager and chief engineer of the Bureau of Water Works and Supply, which is now the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. When asked by Keyes if he would build the dam on the same spot again, Mulholland replied, "No, I must be frank and say that now I would not." Formerly the property of the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce, this piece was acquired by author Tom Zimmerman (along with other source material) for his book on the city, Paradise Promoted: The Booster Campaign That Created Los Angeles, 1870-1930 (2008). FIRST EDITION. “Mary Kettilby’s collection of cookery recipes and medicinal and home remedies, from a tasty “green-pease soop, without meat” to gooseberry wine. Households that could not afford French cooks or French cooking came to form a growing audience for books by women that contained unpretentious recipes cut to suit a less costly cloth, for pickling and collaring rather than ragouts. Where Hannah Woolley had led, plenty of female cooks with their eye on the profitable middle market followed, with books like Mary Kettilby’s collection of recipes (1714) and Eliza Smith’s Compleat Housewife (1734)” Colquhoun, Taste: The Story of Britain through its Cookery (2015)). Kettilby’s book purported to be a collective effort: the preface stating that ‘a Number of very Curious and Delicate House-wives Club’d to furnish out this Collection’. Maclean however (pages 79-82) doubts this, and notes that evidence from later editions indicate Kettilby to be the main author. Apart from the Preface, there is no introduction of any sort: the recipes follow immediately after the chapter headings. The book is clearly divided into chapters of recipes for food and for remedies, but within the chapters there is no definite structure. For example, the first chapter begins with six recipes for soups, followed by recipes for collared beef, ‘French-Cutlets’, collared mutton, stewed pigeons, broiled pigeons, dressed turbot, and then patties ‘for a Dish of Fish’. The recipes are given either as goals, as ‘To make Hogs-Puddings’, or as titles, sometimes with descriptions, as ‘A very good Tansy’. Quantities are given in whichever units are convenient, as ‘a Gallon of grated Bread’, ‘three Pounds of Currants’, or ‘nine Eggs’. Often, quantities rely on the cook’s judgment, as ‘as much Sugar as will make it very sweet’. Temperatures and timings are given when necessary, as ‘a cool Oven: Half an Hour bakes it’. Later binding in 19th century style. Half-calf, gilt-decorated spine, marbled endpapers. The front paste-down contains the bookplates of two significant culinary collections: Thomas Scruggs & Margaret Cook, and Marian Hatch. The Hatch bookplate was designed and engraved by British engraver Alfred J. Downey. With the bookseller's ticket of Philip C. Duschnes to the rear pastedown. The first English Catholic priest to be elected to the Royal Society of London, Needham (1713-81), developed a theory of generation in this work which placed him in the vitalist camp through its reliance on principles peculiar to living things and its assignment of self-patterning powers to matter. It differed from Buffon’s in its denial of chance combinations of mathematically countable genetic traits. The final 29 pages — “Description et Usage du Microscope” — discuss a Cuff-style microscope developed by Passement. Its parts are illustrated on one of the plates. Fine copy with the bookplate of Etienne François Dutour de Salvert (1711-89), experimental physicist, geologist, and botanist from Riom. Cook's Second Voyage 1777 Dublin edition [2 volumes]. Octavo. 8½ x 5 inches. [6], xxx, 372pp + [6], 392pp. 1 folding map, 4 engraved plates. Leather bindings with dark red leather spine labels. Covers well worn, front hinges of both volumes broken but holding, rear hinges starting. Shiny glue residue on each spine and hinge from an earlier attempt at repair. Folding table torn at fold, discolored from old tape repair. Modern bookplates. A good set. First Dublin edition. 2 volumes of a 4-volume set, complete within itself. The Beddie bibliography notes two 1777 Dublin editions. The first is part of a 4-volume set. "Binder's title: Cook and Forester's Voyage. Consists of the two-volume Dublin editions of Cook's Voyage to the south Pole… and Forster's Voyage around the World…, 1777, each volume having two title pages." (Beddie). This set only has one title page. However, the "Directions for Placing the Cuts" include directions for plates in Foster's Voyage, labeling the volumes as 3rd and 4th in the set. (The two volumes of Cook's Voyage offered here are labeled as the 1st and 2nd volumes of the set). While only the Cook volumes are offered here, it is complete in itself. The official account of Cook's second voyage and his first as commander of the Resolution (1772-1775). The success of Captain James Cook's first voyage led the Admiralty to send him on a second expedition which was to circumnavigate the globe as far south as possible in search of any southern continents. The men on this expedition were the first to cross the Antarctic Circle. Further visits were made to New Zealand and on two great sweeps Cook made an astonishing series of discoveries and rediscoveries including Easter Island, The Marquesas, Tahiti and the Society Islands, Niue, the Tonga Islands, the New Hebrides, New Caledonia, Norfolk Island, and a number of smaller islands. Another Dublin edition was published in 1784, this earlier Dublin edition is scarce. [Beddie: 1218; Hill: 358; Sabin: 16245].

No binding. Very Good. Photo Vintage original 10.25 x 8" (26 x 20 cm.) double weight black-and-white photo, USA. There is a 5/8" (1.4 cm.) tear on middle right margin, going slightly into blank background of image, a marginal chip at extreme left blank bottom, and some soiling and general signs of handling, very good.The earliest photo that we have seen of legendary African American comic Slappy White. The Two Zephyrs were a Black comedy duo comprised of Slappy White and Clarence Schelle, from the 1940s. They appeared on radio's The Major Bowes Amateur Hour and TV's The Morey Amsterdam Show. We don't know what happened to Clarence Schelle, but Slappy White went onto a long successful career! He partnered with Redd Foxx in the Chitlins Circuit of stand-up comedy in the 1950s. In 1969, he partnered with Steve Rossi, one of the first integrated comedy duos, but they broke up in the 1970s. He rebounded strongly, performing stand-up in Las Vegas shows, and was a frequent guest on the Dean Martin comedy roasts! He passed away in 1995 at the age of 74. This photos contains far and away the earliest image of Slappy White we have ever seen, when he was performing in his first successful act, as one half of the Two Zephyrs.

This version states the publisher as "Merriam & Moore" on the title page and "Merriam Moore & Co." on the front engraving. Merriam & Moore only stated their name this way in 1851, but from 1847 to 1858 they added "& Co.".

Publisher's red morocco binding, with Grolier Club insignia in gilt to front board, board edges triple-ruled in gilt, five raised bands to spine, with spine lettered and ruled in gilt, top edge gilt, and brown endpapers. Near fine, with light rubbing to spine ends, some nicks to spine bands, light rubbing to joints, a bit of ink staining to top and right margins of rear board and top of front board, and corners lightly nicked. Overall, a very handsome copy. In this book, George William Curtis writes about the life of the great 19th century American author, Washington Irving. Perhaps the most notable of Washington's works is The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. A collection that Irving published serially between 1819 and 1820, The Sketch Book includes two of the first, and most influential, short stories in American history, "Rip Van Winkle" and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." George William Curtis (1824 - 1892) was a 19th century author, essayist, and orator. In his illustrious life, he lived at Brook Farm with Emerson and Thoreau, traveled the world and wrote travelogs like Nile Notes of a Howadji (1851) and The Howadji in Syria (1852), and, later in life, was appointed chairman of the commission on civil service reform by Ulysses S. Grant (1871). This copy was formerly owned by Edwin B. Holden, who served as president of the Grolier Club in 1906. Holden also co-founded the Club Bindery (1895 - 1909), which was created "in order to make available in America craft binding qualitatively competitive with European artisans" and was closely linked to the Grolier Club (Grolier Club). George A. Zabriskie was a Grolier Club member who served as the president of the New York Sons of the Revolution and of the New York Historical Society.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine.

Our research shows there was usually a second page for the women's' cabin which also had a partially printed year to be filled in. Else Very Good. The steamer Victoria was built by William Knox at Harmar, Ohio, in 1838, for Mr. Hook of Mobile, Alabama. Both volumes inscribed to J. W. Fredericks from Major V. J. A. Lillie-Costello, November 1955, on front free endpapers. With Fredericks' ownership inscription in pencil on front panel of dust jacket to vol. I. A straight set, slight dustsoil to edges of textblock, endleaves foxed, else clean: Very Good. Jackets price-clipped, lightly rubbed, browned at spines, with minor dustsoil: Very Good. The inscribee is J. Wayne Fredericks (1917-2004), distinguished Africanist, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State under the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, later Director of Africa programs for the Ford Foundation and Director of the Foreign Policy Association (1994-2004). Fredericks' work on behalf of Black South Africans was sufficiently well-known and significant that Desmond Tutu spoke at his memorial service in 2004.
