Description
Glasguae [Glasgow]: In Aedibus Academicis, Excudebant Robertus et Andreas Foulis, 1758. First thus. Near Fine. The rare large paper issue of the beautiful Foulis folio edition of the Odyssey. Near-contemporary diced russia rebacked with gilt spine. Two volumes, folio. Measuring 245 x 385 mm. [viii], 297; [iv], 336 pp. Bound without terminal blanks, otherwise complete. Pages ruled in red with half-titles and title-pages elaborately ruled in red and green. Corners somewhat rubbed. Some foxing to preliminaries in volume one, otherwise very clean and fresh throughout. A bright, Near Fine copy. The Foulis folio editions of the Odyssey (1758) and the Iliad (1756) are regarded as landmarks in Scottish printing and two of the finest editions of Homer ever produced. This large-paper issue, measuring about 5cm greater in both dimensions than the regular edition and printed on better-quality paper, is rare and particularly sumptuous (Gaskell, 319). The production was highly praised by Dibdin, both for its aesthetics and its accuracy, as "each sheet, before it was finally committed to the press, having been six times revised by various literary men" including Andrew Foulis, Professors James Moor and George Muirhead, and James Tweedie. The Foulis editions of the Odyssey and Iliad were both printed with specially-cut double pica type from the Edinburgh University type founder Andrew Wilson, resulting in a clear and readable text praised by Edward Gibbon, who wrote that he "read Homer with more pleasure in the Glasgow edition. Through that fine medium, the poet's sense seems more beautiful and transparent." ESTC T90250. Gaskell, Bibliography of the Foulis Press, 319. Near Fine.

Description
Sheffield: J. Montgomery, 1805. First edition. Contemporary mottled calf with gilt and morocco to spine. Marbled endpapers. Measuring 148 x 90mm and collating complete with subscriber's list: li, [1, blank], 256. Discreet repair to upper joint near crown and joints starting but sound. Occasional light scattered foxing, but a largely clean and fresh copy internally. Several small pinholes to title and dedication leaves not affecting text. Bookplate of Mary Oates to front pastedown, with her husband George Oates (1789-1827) appearing in the subscriber's list, possibly on her behalf. A scarce collection of poetry by the writer Barbara Hoole Hofland, who supported herself and founded a school with funds from her publications, OCLC documents only 2 copies in libraries (BL and NLS). It is the only copy on the market. "In forty years of writing, Barbara Hoole Hofland produced nearly seventy titles...They include books for children or young adults and adult novels, with some poems, plays, guidebooks, and handbooks on artistic topics rounding out her bibliography. More than 300,000 copies of her books were sold in Britain and as many, proportionately to population, in the U.S." (Orlando Project). Her career began of necessity. Having married the merchant T. Bradford Hoole, she was shortly after widowed and left to support herself. It was during this period that Poems was published, with a staggering list of 2,000 subscribers including George Oates (who purchased the present copy). Funds from this work, which emphasizes female experiences and interiority, made it possible for her to launch and maintain a boarding school at Harrogate, where she could make education accessible to girls. On her marriage to artist Thomas Hofland, she moved from Sheffield to London, where she settled into a career as a full time writer. "Though many of her titles fall naturally into groups, [focusing] on family relationships (notably widows as struggling, successful single mothers)...she always varied her forumulas. Her books for the adult market were independent in their attitudes, expressing an original and thinking mind" (Orlando Project). This early work reveals Hofland finding her creative voice, which ultimately did not shy away from or diminish the value of how women perceive experiences from the domestic to the global. While some poems address the loss of friends, advice to young men and women, or the hopes of a widow for her daughter, others consider how war and politics unsettle and affect women.

Description
London: Smith, Elder & Co, 1887. First edition. Very Good. Original publisher's cloth binding stamped in black. Yellow endpapers. Measuring 185 x 125mm and collating complete with half titles to all volumes and publisher's adverts to rear of final volume: [6], 291, [1]; [6], 316; [6], 298, [2, adverts]. A Very Good copy with minor bumps to extremities; some hinges tender and starting. Rear hinge repaired in volume 1. Minor marginal foxing and staining throughout, not affecting text. "George Gissing intended Thyrza to contain the very spirit of London working-class life. His story tells of Walter Egremont, an Oxford trained idealist who gives lectures on literature to workers, some of them from his father's Lambeth factory. Thyrza Trent, a young hat trimmer, meets and falls in love with him, forsaking Gilbert Grail, an intelligent working man who Egremont has put in charge of his library. In a tale of ambition, betrayal, and disillusionment, Gissing's heroine aspires to purity and self-improvement. Trapped by birth and circumstance, she is unable to escape her destiny. Thyrza Trent is the embodiment of Gissing's preoccupation with sex, class, and money. Through her, he exposes a society intrinsically opposed to social mobility" (Victorian Secrets). Very Good.

Description
Cambridge: Printed at the Riverside Press, 1883. No. 68 OF 250 COPIES of the "Riverside Edition.. 248 x 159 mm. (9 3/4 x 6 1/4"). 13 volumes. Introductory notes to each volume by George Parsons Lathrop. Restrained but attractive early 20th century brown crushed morocco by Ernst Hertzberg & Sons (stamp-signed on rear free endpaper), covers with frame formed by pairs of plain gilt rules and a single gilt dot at each corner, raised bands, spine compartments gilt in the same design as the covers, gilt titling, turn-ins densely gilt in a palmette pattern, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt, other edges rough trimmed. All 13 volumes with frontispieces and title pages with etched vignette. A Large Paper Copy on laid paper. Title pages in red and black. Clark B-10; BAL 7643. Spines faintly and evenly sunned, just a hint of wear to the tops of three spines, but A BEAUTIFUL SET, the lustrous bindings almost entirely unworn, and the text unusually clean, fresh, and bright. One of the major figures in the history of literature in the United States, Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-64) was among those who first inspired the idea of "American literature," a national literature that could take its place alongside its long-established European forebears. Probably more than any other writer of stature in 19th century America, Hawthorne combined vivid imagination with careful, structured craft. In addition to his great achievements--"The Scarlet Letter" of 1850 and "The House of Seven Gables" (1851)--our handsome edition contains all of the lesser narrative and non-fiction writings, including voluminous entries from his journals, said to contain upwards of 300,000 words. This copy has the original 12 volumes that normally make up the set, along with an additional 13th volume containing "Doctor Grimshawe's Secret," edited by Julian Hawthorne. Ernst Hertzberg, who learned to bind in his native Germany, went to work as a finisher for the Ringer bindery after immigrating to Chicago, and he eventually became a partner in the business. He also collected Napoleonic prints and documents with the goal of binding an extra-illustrated edition of William Milligan Sloane's "Life of Napoleon Bonaparte." The completed project was exhibited at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis, where it won top honors for bookbinding. Hertzberg sold the set to a private collector for the then-staggering sum of $12,000, which allowed him to buy out his partner and set up his own bindery..

New York/Los Angeles: Samuel French. Very Good. (c.1943, 1944). First Edition Thus. Softcover. [light external soiling and moderate age-toning, small closed tear at bottom of front cover; front endpaper stamped "Return to Story Dept. / Paramount Pictures Inc.," and there is also an old paper clip affixed to the top of the front endpaper which has caused the page to tear at that point so is better left in place]. (B&W photographs) The published script for the hit play (which ran for 642 performances on Broadway between September 1942 and January 1944), adapted by the author of the 1940 novel of the same name, in collaboration with Herschel Williams. The movie version, also called JANIE and released by Warner Bros. in September 1944, was stated to have been based only on the play, with no mention of the original source novel, which has itself become something of a rarity. (As of this writing, there is only a single copy of the novel on offer in the online marketplace -- also by ReadInk. See our separate listing for more speculation about this oddly "lost" novel.) A sequel to the film, JANIE GETS MARRIED, appeared in 1946, with a similarly evasive credit: "based on characters created in the play." (It's also interesting to note -- although I can't say what significance to attach to it, if any -- that this particular copy was once the property of the Story Department at a different movie studio (Paramount) than the one that produced the two films.) .

First Edition. Valenti Angelo (1897-1982), whose work is highly prized among graphic artists and collectors, was born in Massarossa, in Tuscany, and immigrated to the U.S. at the age of 8. After a period in New York City, he settled in California where he became a leading engraver and printer, specializing in the linocut as a medium, and in evocative Southwestern night and desert scenes. In San Francisco he worked with the celebrated Grabhorn Press. Nino, his first book for children, received the Newbery Honor in 1939. In Golden Gate, Angelo provides a sequel to the earlier autobiographical Nino, in which he had recreated his very youngest years in Tuscany. Golden Gate restarts the story of his childhood after the American arrival.
