April, 1918. Unique. As accomplished; tacked into a frame (easily removed).. Very good; some buckling. Excellent color.. 17 1/4 x 23 1/4 inches (painted surface). Gouache on paper board. The original art for the Year of the Child poster. Signed by Mora. The "year of the child" was declared by Woodrow Wilson to be 1918. This the result of the failure rate of recruits to the armed services in their medical examinations. Wilson's declaration was the first step in efforts to improve the health of the public and especially young men. The execution fell to the US Children's Bureau and Woman's Committee of the Council of National Defense. The Bureau was established in 1912 to, " ... investigate and report upon all matters pertaining to the welfare of children and child life among all classes of our people, and shall especially investigate the questions of infant mortality, the birth rate, orphanage, juvenile courts, desertion, dangerous occupations, accidents and diseases of children ...." It became a center for public health initiatives. The Council was established in 1916 to coordinate resources and industries for the war effort. Numerous subordinate agencies and committees were formed. Evolving out of the National American Woman Suffrage Association the Woman's Committee - in structure and resource - was almost pre-formed. As a result it was very effective in marshalling the clubs and associations of women across the nation to further Wilson's purpose. Pursuant to this Francis Luis Mora designed this poster to advertise the bureau (the poster was issued with modified text well into the 1930s - see LC website for the entry) as well as poster work for the bond campaigns for the Liberty Loan boards (under the direction of the Committee for Public Information). He was a well established artist and illustrator before and after WWI with numerous public and private commissions.

Suevo-Hallensis: Impensis Auctoris ...., [1711] 1712. First Edition. Second issue.. Unusual 18th century paper covered paste paper boards (original). A contemporary gilt paper decorated with swirling vines (a bit faded); a.e.g. & gauffered. A presentation binding from the author (?) - there is a similar binding on a copy in Bavaria.. Very good; some wear to the spine; some tide marks to the preliminary pages.. 8vo, double page title, [84], 135, [1 - blank], 40, [8 - errata] pp. Text in Latin. A remarkable and little known monograph on head trauma and its ramifications. The book was published at the author's expense and has the hallmarks of a "special" production, i.e., attention to typography and binding. The work draws heavily on published sources - appended to the text is a 20 page index of the authorities cited, prior to an extensive subject index. The text itself is a detailed overview with a thicket of citations. But at the end is what is perhaps the most important section (40 pp.): an examination of 9 "typical" cases representing complex and perplexing ramifications of head trauma based on the author's experience. Each case is presented in detail with the first section stating the symptoms followed by a "resolution" giving the medicines administered and treatments along with the results. The author appears to have had a short life with only two other relatively brief publications in the years immediately after this work. He was among the early members and in the first generation participant to the work of the Deut. Aka. der Naturforscher Leopoldina. Blake p. 315; absent from Waller that has the reprint in 1716; OCLC showing a handful of copies in Europe (mostly defective) and one at the NLM. Bibliographic note: This copy does not have the single leaf title (to precede the double page title) that is dated 1711. It was in all likelihood cancelled by the printer when the book received its substantial textual additions obviously meant for inclusion. Proof lies with the copy of record cited by the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek and digitized (using a copy at Augsburg). The copy of record is lacking the 84 pages of index (inserted between the A and B signatures and partially signed * and **) and the all important separately paginated and signed addendum with the case studies and errata that are present here. The Preface is dated April 1710, showing that in the intervening months, it was amended while in press (the author, paying for the printing, was no doubt allowed such consideration by the printer), thereby making for at least two distinct issues.

Rome: Michele Lucchese, ca. 1534-, 1564. SECOND STATE (of 5). With “Michaelan/gelus. Buona/rotus. Inuentor” on the plaque at center and “.M.L./cum priuile-/gio.” on the slab at lower right. Hardcover. Fine. A fine, rich impression and a very fine example, with ample margins and only some marginal blemishes. This is a reversed copy of an engraving by Agostino Veneziano (1490-1540), published in 1523, of five figures from Michelangelo’s cartoon for the Battle of Cascina, a grouping sometimes referred to as “the bathers”. The drummers seen in the distance, which Vasari tells us appeared in Michelangelo’s original cartoon, show that Veneziano was either familiar with Michelangelo’s original -now lost- or with early copies made from it. “The cartoon created by Michelangelo between 1504 and 1505 for the fresco that, together with Leonardo's Battle of Anghiari, was supposed to decorate the Hall of the Great Council (Salone dei Cinquecento) in the Palazzo della Signoria (Palazzo Vecchio) in Florence, was dismembered and dispersed within a decade of its completion. “Prepared and drawn in the great hall of the Hospital of Sant'Onofrio, the cartoon was displayed for some time in the Palazzo della Signoria, in what was to have been its final location, and from there it was first taken to the Sala del Papa at Santa Maria Novella, then—before 1515—to the family palace on Via Larga, ‘in the great hall above’ (Vasari, Michelangelo, ed. 1962, ii, p. 261). Several artists were able to access it during this period and, even after its dismemberment, to copy it. “The most complete visual record of the lost composition is the grisaille by Bastiano (called Aristotile) da Sangallo, preserved in Norfolk and identifiable as the "chiaroscuro oil painting" painted by Bastiano in 1542 "at the persuasion of Giorgio Vasari, his close friend.”(Vasari, ed. 1966-1987, v, 1984, p. 393). “The cartoon's popularity through prints, however, is limited to single figures or groups of figures and can be traced, as far as signed or clearly attributed works are concerned, to the work of two engravers: Marcantonio Raimondi for the foreground of the leftmost part of the composition (a group often referred to as the “climbers”, and Agostino Veneziano for the standing soldier dressing and the righthand part of the composition (the group referred to as the “bathers”). “It is now widely believed that Raimondi personally examined the original during his journey from Bologna to Rome in early 1509… The circumstances under which Agostino Veneziano learned about Michelangelo's model are still unclear. His first engraving with a subject from the Battle of Cascina is from 1517, shortly after his arrival in Rome in 1516 (Minonzio, 1990). It is possible, as Konrad Oberhuber suggested (in Raffaello in Vaticano, 1984, p. 333), that a complete drawing of all the bathers by Raimondi was available in his workshop, where Agostino worked, but it is more likely that he encountered the work during his Florentine period (1515-1516), when Veneziano engraved for Andrea del Sarto and Bandinelli, the latter of whom, according to Vasari, ‘having a forged key’ had regular access to Michelangelo’s original cartoon… “This successful print is the subject of a curious critical history. As highlighted in the bibliography section (below), it has been sometimes treated as the work of Michele Lucchese, at times as the work of an anonymous artist close to Agostino Veneziano, whose monogram was added (as has been laboriously reconstructed after examining many examples) only towards the end of the sixteenth century, after the edition published by Pietro de' Nobili… “The first state, as often with the works of Michele Lucchese (ALBERTI, 2014-2015), has no inscriptions; the second state [the one offered here] refers to Michelangelo as inventor and has Michele Lucchese's privilege (“.M.L. cum privilegio”); the third state shows that the plate passed to the publisher Pietro de' Nobili in the 1580s. Subsequently, the Lucchese mark and de' Nobili's address were erased, and Veneziano's false date and monogram were added. A large number of the copies found belong to the late eighteenth-century edition edited by Carlo Losi, who engraved his name on the matrix in 1773 (and whose sales catalog still lists it in 1790, Index, 1790, p. 8, no. 7), but which, very curiously, has been systematically erased from the paper on the prints. Subsequently, all trace of the plate was lost: It is not difficult to imagine that, given the obscene subject matter, it may have been among the coppers sent to be melted down in the Tivoli copperworks by order of Leo XII, Pope from 1823 to 1829 (we have not conducted any archival research in this regard).”(Alberti, Rovetta, and Salsi, “D'après Michelangelo”(2015), p. 22 ff., and catalogue number 12.).
