Description
New York: Oxford University Press, 1953. HARVEY Will Make a Musical..." A Remarkable Mary Chase Letter to Leslie Bricusse Discussing a Proposed Musical Adaptation of Harvey CHASE, Mary Chase. Harvey. A Play by Mary Chase. Illustrated by Blechman. New York: Oxford University Press, 1953. First edition. Octavo (9 1/4 x 6 inches; 235 x 152 mm.). [vi], [1-2], 3-89, [1] pp. Illustrated title-page and text decorations by Blechman. Publisher's original black cloth over boards, front cover and spine decoratively lettered in pink. Top of spine with a short closed tear, paper-stain to blank front endpapers from an old clipping. A very good copy in the original pictorial dust jacket, jacket worn at folds with front panel nearly detached but still present and visually striking. Laid into the volume is an exceptional typed letter signed by Mary Chase to Leslie Bricusse, dated: "June 10, 1980 805 Tenderfoot Hill Rd Denver, Colo". The lengthy and highly personal letter discusses the possibility of adapting Harvey into a musical and reveals Chase's admiration for Bricusse's songwriting and theatrical sensibility. In part: "HARVEY will make a musical but a truly fine one. My congratulations and my gratitude. It is the possible dream..." Chase goes on to praise Bricusse's lyrics for Man of La Mancha: "There must have been deep inside my consciousness and the line 'I'm only thinking of him' and the line 'Hollywood is a modern Don Quixote'..." Most significantly, she reflects thoughtfully on the dangers of over-expanding the central conceit of Harvey for the musical stage: "The contribution I might make now to the script would be for me to advise you against overdoing Harvey to the final curtain... the first half then the shadowy cross of a rabbit at the curtain..." She concludes warmly: "Believe me, Leslie, I am grateful." A superb literary and theatrical association piece documenting a serious attempt to transform one of the most beloved American plays of the twentieth century into a musical vehicle for Leslie Bricusse. First produced on Broadway in 1944, Harvey became an enduring theatrical classic and won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The story of Elwood P. Dowd and his invisible six-foot rabbit entered American cultural mythology through both the original stage success and the celebrated 1950 film adaptation starring James Stewart. The present letter offers rare insight into Mary Chase's own thinking about adapting Harvey for musical theater and preserves an intimate creative exchange between two major figures of stage entertainment. An extraordinary association copy, elevated by one of the most revealing and substantive letters to Leslie Bricusse yet encountered.

Description
London: Orbis Publishing, 1979. To Dear Leslie..." - Rudolf Nureyev to Leslie Bricusse A Signed Association Copy of Fonteyn and Nureyev, with a Playhouse Theatre Archive of Nureyev in The King and I A compelling association copy linking two titans of 20th-century performance - Rudolf Nureyev and Leslie Bricusse -enhanced by a substantial and visually striking group of theatrical ephemera documenting Nureyev's late-stage career in musical theatre. NUREYEV, Rudolf. BLAND, Alexander. Fonteyn and Nureyev. The Story of a Partnership. London: Orbis Publishing, [1979]. First edition. Large quarto (11 3/8 x 8 7/8 inches; 289 x 226 mm.). 207, [1] pp. Profusely illustrated throughout with black & white photographs. Publisher's black cloth, spine lettered in silver. A fine copy in the original pictorial dust jacket, with only minimal rubbing at extremities. Inscribed on the title-page by Rudolf Nureyev: "To Dear Leslie / my best wishes / Rudolf Nureyev" With: A Playhouse Theatre Archive - Nureyev in Rodgers & Hammerstein's The King and I An exceptional group of original material relating to Nureyev's celebrated appearance in The King and I at the Playhouse Theatre (1989-1990), illustrating his rare crossover from ballet legend to West End leading man: Original 1989 color souvenir program (Rudolf Nureyev in The King and I), folio, 16 pp., illustrated Playhouse Theatre program (1989-1990), 48 pp., with extensive production and cast material. Sixteen original promotional flyers, pictorial, for the same production. Additional printed ephemera, including a feature article titled "Two Who Transformed Their Worlds" Context & Significance: The inscription firmly places this volume within the orbit of Leslie Bricusse, whose extraordinary circle encompassed many of the defining figures of stage and screen. Nureyev - arguably the most electrifying male dancer of the 20th century - rarely appears in signed book form, and even less frequently in association with major figures outside the ballet world. The accompanying archive deepens the offering considerably. Nureyev's appearance as the King of Siam in The King and I was both unexpected and widely publicized - an event that symbolized his late-career reinvention and enduring charisma. Surviving ephemeral material from this production is uncommon in such quantity, and here forms a cohesive, display-worthy ensemble. A Crossroads of Ballet and Broadway: A striking and highly personal association copy-uniting the legendary partnership of Margot Fonteyn and Nureyev with the theatrical world of Bricusse - augmented by a rare archive documenting one of Nureyev's most intriguing late performances.

Very Good
Description
Paris: The Olympia Press, 1959. First edition. Very Good/Very Good. A Very Good copy in like dust jacket. Rear free end paper of the book excised and some splitting at the lower inside joint. Dust jacket with some overall age toning and a small chip at the base of the spine. First printing with the green border on the title page and the original publisher's price of 1500 Francs on both the rear cover of the book and the rear flap. No price defacement, stickers or stamps as is usually found on later states of the book and jacket. William S. Burroughs' infamous novel meanders through the absurd and perverse in an improbable, non-linear narrative. While the adventure jumps from fictional dictatorships, to Mexico, to space, much of the book remains inspired by Burroughs' own drug addiction and his friendships with Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg, core Beat Generation members. Upon its publication in 1959, "The Naked Lunch" was banned from numerous cities though its literary significance was later recognized by Time magazine and the book was included in their Top 100 English speaking novels from 1923 to 2005. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket.

Description
[N.p., likely Jacksonville, Fl., 1941. [4],61,[2]pp. Original pictorial wrappers, stapled. Substantial creasing, rubbing, dust-soiling, and overall wear to wrappers. Faint foxing and spotting to initial and terminal leaves, but mostly clean internally. Very good. A rare pamphlet celebrating the fortieth anniversary of the Afro-American Life Insurance Company, an important African-American-owned-and-operated insurance company in Florida.  The work includes reproductions of congratulatory letters to the company from Florida governor Spessard Holland and others, portraits and information on the company’s founders, passages on the history of the company, information on the successes of the company’s current operations, and more.  The work is interspersed throughout with a legion of photographs showing the company at work, scenes from various branch offices, the company’s Funeral Services Division, and so forth. "Florida's First African-American Insurance Company -1901-2001.  The Afro-American Insurance Company, formerly the Afro-American Industrial and Benefits Association, was founded in 1901 to provide affordable health insurance and death benefits to the state's African-Americans.  Founded by the Reverend E.J. Gregg, E.W. Latson, Abraham Lincoln Lewis, A.W. Price, Dr. Arthur W. Smith, J.F. Valentine, and the Reverend J. Melton Waldron, the Afro's first office at 14 Ocean Street was destroyed by the great Jacksonville Fire two months after it opened on May 3, 1901.  It then moved to 621 Florida Avenue, the home of treasurer and future president, Abraham Lincoln Lewis (1865-1947).  From their next home office at 105 E. Union Street, the company wrote millions of dollars of insurance policies and started district offices in Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana and Texas..." -  Historical marker at the site of the company's original location in Jacksonville. OCLC reports just two copies, at Howard and the University of North Florida.
