Description
1987. First Edition. Signed. WALLACE, David Foster. The Broom of the System. (New York): Penguin, (1987). Octavo, pictorial white paper wrappers. $2000.First edition, softcover issue, of Wallace’s acclaimed debut novel, signed on the title page by David Foster Wallace. In the tradition of Pynchon's The Crying of Lot 49, Wallace's first novel, written while he was a 24-year-old MFA student, ""attempts to give us a portrait, through a combination of Joycean word games, literary parody and zany picaresque adventure, of a contemporary America run amok… Wallace possesses a wealth of talents—a finely-tuned ear for contemporary idioms; an old-fashioned story-telling gift (as evidenced, in particular, by the stories within stories contained in this novel); a seemingly endless capacity for invention and an energetic refusal to compromise"" (New York Times). The hardcover (Viking) and softcover (Penguin) issues were published simultaneously. Usual mild toning to interior. A fine signed copy.

Description
S. l.: By the author, 1951. Very good. Two caricatures, in pencil, the Antonelli one dated '51, the other one undated; loose sheets, 11 1/2 x 5 3/4 and 10 1/2 x 7 3/4; a few minor nicks to top edge and very light creasing; very good or better condition. Delightful and well-accomplished, the caricatures depicted two giants of the baseball world - John August Antonelli (1930 - 2020) and Ernesto Natali Lombardi (1908 - 1977). Antonelli, a left-handed starting pitcher, would make history with the biggest sign-on bonus with the Boston Braves ($52 000) and would go on to become six-time National League All-Star, playing with the Boston and Milwaukee Braves, Nesw York and San Francisco Giants, and Cleveland Indians. Once called "the slowest man to ever play major league baseball well," Lombardi would be All-Star for seven seasons, playing as a catcher for the Brooklyn Robins, Cincinnati Reds, Boston Braves, and New York Giants.
