"With her breathtaking beauty and enigmatic persona, Greta Garbo is the ultimate Hollywood icon. Though many books have tried to unlock the mystique of the "Swedish Sphinx" by focusing primarily on her personal life, ...[this] is the first book to pay serious attention to what made her an icon–her twenty-four Hollywood films, among them classics such as Flesh and the Devil, Love, Mata Hari, Grand Hotel, Queen Christina, Camille, and Ninotschka. As MGM's highest paid star, Garbo had approval of story, co-star, and cinematographer, wielding power that few others could match–yet she was often at odds with the system that made her such a phenomenon." (Publisher). Not only was Garbo the highest MGM star but, along with Marlene Dietrich, the highest paid star in the industry. Slight age-toning and wear along edges of der. Else in near fine condition. [WITH] Garbo: Portraits From Her Private Collection (Reisfield, Scott; Robert Dance). New York. Rissoli. 2008. Later edition. Folio. 255pp. Original tan over brown cloth in original, photo-illustrated dustjacket. "Famously elusive, Greta Garbo shunned publicity, guarded her privacy, and rejected the Hollywood limelight. Off screen she was known to her adoring public primarily through studio portraits. Though ambivalent about her fame, Garbo saved the publicity photographs presented to her by MOM–works by photographers Clarence Sinclair Bull, Ruth Harriet Louise, Edward Steichen, Nikolas Murray, and George Hurrell, among others." (Publisher). DJ slightly rubbed with slight traces of fluid exposure. Block with light age-toning along edges. DJ in overall good+, binding and interior in very good condition.

Description
1713. (CHARLES I) [FINCH, Heneage, Earl of Nottingham]. The Indictment, Arraignment, Tryal, and Judgment, at Large, of Twenty-nine Regicides, the Murtherers Of His Late Sacred Majesty King Charles the First, of Glorious Memory… Together with a Summary of the Dark and Horrid Decrees of those Cabbalists, Preparatory to that Hellish Fact. London: J. Walthoe, et al., 1713. Octavo, later full dark brown paneled calf nicely rebacked with original spine and spine label laid down, raised bands. $1500.Later edition of this contemporary account of the trial of ""the murtherers of his late sacred majesty,"" Charles I, attributed to the prosecuting solicitor-general, with engraved frontispiece portrait of Charles. Those responsible for the beheading of Charles I in 1649 were not brought to trial until the Restoration of Charles II in 1660. Heneage Finch, later first Earl of Nottingham, ""one of the prosecuting counsel in the trial of the regicides in October 1660… is described in one account as effectually answering Cooke, the framer of the impeachment of Charles I."" (Though published anonymously, this account has been attributed to him; he was later appointed Lord Chancellor by Charles II.) Despite the blatant royalist bias of this work's title, Finch's impartial character is a matter of record: ""The fact that throughout an unceasing official career of more than twenty years, in a time of passion and intrigue, Finch was never once the subject of parliamentary attack, nor ever lost the royal confidence, is a remarkable testimony both to his probity and discretion"" (DNB VII, 11). The defendants, found guilty, were hanged, and all but one were drawn and quartered, their heads stuck on poles for public view; ""but the Body of Mr. Hacker was, by his Majesties great favor, given entire to his friends, and buried."" First published in 1660, with another edition in 1679. See Wing N1403 (1660 first edition, crediting Nottingham as the author). Some mild spotting and toning to text; nicely rebacked.

Description
Paris, 1817. b/w engraved plates. Oblong 4to. 84 (of 120) plates with text interleaved. Baugean (1764-1819) was a painter and engraver who specialized in marine subjects. In Paris he was appointed engraver to the King. This is a collection of high quality engravings of merchant and naval craft of Europe, England and America. They are accurately and well portrayed, in a number of settings; ships are shown in ports, underway, careened and undergoing various evolutions. Vessel types range from small watercraft through whalers and merchantmen to frigates. Interleaved with the plates are text sections which give a description of subject of each plate (in French). As Polak notes these engravings will be of great use to those who are interested in marine architecture or marine art. Polak 482. (Citing an edition of 150 plates) Brewington Dictionary p. 31. Plate size about 5 x 7 inches. Baugeans work was originally issued in parts. This collection contains all of Vol. I. Vol. II lacks 4 plates. Vol. III is lacking altogether, and Vol. IV lacks 2 plates. The numbers of missing plates are 32, 34, 59-90, 109 and 110. The title page is tanned. Some foxing throughout, but plate areas not too badly affected. Attractively bound in half calf over boards with spine label.
