Description
Leipzig: Internationaler Psychoanlytischer Verlag, 1922. SECOND REVISED EDITION. Publisher’s cloth, author and title in gilt on cover and spine, front cover a bit worn on the bottom. Presentation copy from Freud to George Sylvester Viereck (see provenance below), his signature and annotation on the fly-leaf and with the bookplates of Viereck and Otto Orren Fisher on the paste-down. Second revised edition of one of Freud’s most popular works, his lectures on the introduction to psychoanalysis. The twenty-eight lectures are grouped into three parts, including the unconscious where he discusses Freudian slips, dreams and the theory of neuroses. Freud intended this to be a simple and straight-forward discussion of his work for the “lay multitude.” It was first printed in three separate parts between 1916 to 1917. Provenance: Viereck (1884-1962) was a German-American poet, writer, and pro-German propagandist. His mother was born in America and married her first cousin (his father). He began writing as early as 11 years old and published several works before returning to Germany before World War I where he edited a German-sponsored weekly magazine. In 1923, Viereck published a popular-science book entitled Rejuvenation: How Steinach Makes People Young, which drew the attention of Freud, who apparently wrote Viereck asking if he would write a similar book about psychoanalysis. Viereck traveled to Vienna to interview Freud, and then went to Munich to interview Adolf Hitler. He ultimately worked for the Nazi party writing propaganda during the war. Dr. Otto Orren Fisher (1881-1961), a Detroit doctor, was a renowned book and manuscript collector who at his death had assembled a collection of some 20,000 items in many subjects.

Description
London: Smith, Elder & Co, 1865. FIRST EDITION. 170 x 117 mm. (6 3/4 x 4 3/4"). 2 p.l., 196 pp. Very pretty teal blue crushed morocco, elaborately gilt, by Charles Elsden Gladstone (signed in gilt "C. E. G." on front turn-in), covers with intertwining gilt vine forming a lattice design, the compartments formed containing a Tudor rose or gilt lettering, raised bands, spine compartments tooled with a swirl of gilt vine, wide turn-ins with spray of gilt leaves at corners, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Printed in black and red. Rear free endpaper with cut signature of "F. T. Palgrave 1865" mounted below manuscript notes in pencil. Spine evenly sunned to gray-brown, faint freckled foxing to flyleaves, but an excellent copy, clean and fresh internally, and the binding with few signs of wear. This is the first printing of Ruskin's famous lectures addressing what to read, the education and obligations of women in the monied classes, and the ultimate mystery of life, offered here in a binding by a talented amateur. Ruskin said that if one read the first two lectures in conjunction with his "Unto This Last" (1862), one would know "the chief truths" he had endeavored to display throughout his writings. Ruskin's views on aesthetics were no doubt of interest to Capt. Charles Elsden Gladstone, R.N. (1855-1919), a Royal Navy officer who bound several books in the late 19th and early 20th century. We do not know where he trained, but around the turn of the 20th century there were a number of opportunities available in England to study with established binders, either in one of the Arts & Crafts schools or in a workshop. Gladstone was a "finisher" who applied the gold tooling and decoration on books already bound in leather, and his work shows real skill and excellent taste. Former owner Francis Turner Palgrave (1824-97) was a literary critic and poet, best known for his poetical anthology "Golden Treasury of English Songs and Lyrics."

Description
1960. [Ecology] U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare Public Health Service's Advanced Waste Treatment Research series, issued 1960-1964, which document the federal government's first sustained research program addressing the inadequacy of conventional sewage treatment in an industrial and chemically complex society. Issued following the 1961 amendments to the Federal Water Pollution Control Act, which expanded federal jurisdiction and authorized intensified research into water pollution, these reports establish the technical basis for the transition from sanitation-based infrastructure to chemically and technologically advanced water purification. They address a defined policy failure: primary and secondary treatment systems removed solids and reduced biological oxygen demand but left dissolved contaminants including phosphates, nitrates, synthetic detergents, and industrial chemicals in drinking water supplies. Produced as American waterways including the Potomac River, Lake Erie, and the Cuyahoga River exhibited visible ecological degradation, these publications place federal scientific research within the early formation of national environmental policy and the shift toward water reuse, chemical treatment, and pollution control as federal responsibilities. Archive of twelve issues, all issued by U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. Public Health Service. Environmental Health Series Water Supply and Pollution Control. Advanced Waste Treatment Research reports. Washington, D.C.: U.S. Government Printing Office, 1960-1964. all publications issued in original printed wrappers, Environmental Health Series reports with blue-covered summary volumes; all copies bearing a consistent manuscript ownership signature possibly reading "C. Flouhill" to upper covers. This research program preceded the institutional consolidation of federal environmental authority in the mid-1960s and the legislative framework later formalized in the Clean Water Act of 1972, making these reports direct technical antecedents to the statutory standards that followed. The inclusion of reverse osmosis, ion exchange, and adsorption demonstrates early federal investigation into processes that became standard components of municipal and industrial water treatment. Light edge wear, minor toning, and handling marks consistent with use; overall very good condition. A cohesive federal research archive documenting the point at which water pollution control shifted from a localized sanitation issue to a national technological and regulatory problem.

Description
Durango, Mx: October, 1793. Very good.. Broadside, 12 x 8.5 inches, printed in two columns, with a central woodcut headpiece, all within a handsome ornamental border. Old folds, minor foxing, light edge wear, eight pinpoint wormholes not affecting readability of text. Completed in ink, with ink docketing on verso. Signed and rubricated. A seemingly unrecorded "patente" or indulgence issued by the Holy Cathedral Church of Durango conferring membership into a religious confraternity for a woman named Maria Josefa Cano whose name is entered in ink within the text of the broadside. This indulgence, issued by the colonial "Santa Hermandad," defined Cano's duties, which included attendance at mass on the last Sunday of each month as well as certain festivities, assist sickly brothers and sisters, and attend funerals of fellow members "with a candle in hand." It also provided Cano with membership indulgences, provided for sixteen pesos for her burial, and defined the masses to be performed upon her death. This example includes the name of the former "Hermano mayor" (eldest brother) crossed out and with the name of the current elder signed and rubricated just below; also includes rubrication below the secretary's name. A wonderful indulgence for a woman in Durango in the last decade of the 18th century.

Description
Np. No binding. Just About Fine. Los Angeles: Np, [ca. 1924]. Vintage original 8 x 10" (20 x 25 cm) black-and-white glossy silver gelatin photo. Just about fine. Art and costume designer Natacha Rambova is shown modeling her stylish early Art Deco dress and headwear poses with a case of jewelry artifacts, likely inspired by the recent discovery of Tutankhamun's grave, which became the rage of the Art Deco movement. Designing sets, costumes and occasionally acting in films, Rambova was one of the female powerhouses of the 1920s. Married to Rudolph Valentino from 1923-1925, she designed several of his epic films. She later pursued an interest in Egyptology and became a published author on the subject.

Description
London: C. Hitch and L. Hawes, 1758. First Edition. Very good. Octavo size, 45 pp. Sir Percivall Pott (1714-1788) is considered one of the greatest surgeons of the eighteenth century and is thought of as one of the founders of orthopaedics; he was the first scientist to connect environmental causes to cancer (chimney sweeps' carcinoma). He received several honours for his work, including Election to Fellowship of the Royal Society, Honorary Diploma of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and Freedom of the Irish College (n.b., from the web site of PubMed Central). He is perhaps best know for his "Treatise on Ruptures", which was based on personal experience. "In 1756, he had a fall from his horse during his visit to the Anatomy School in Covent Garden and sustained an ankle fracture. He, against advice, did not opt for amputation and survived the incident and wrote his famous 'Treatise on Ruptures' " (ibid). Two years later, he had additional thoughts on a certain type of rupture which he did not address in his first treatise (per his comment on page 5 of this work). This is the first edtion of that work. Scarce: we were unable to locate any in the trade, a single auction record (per RBH) and eleven with institutions. ___DESCRIPTION: Marbled paper wraps with the text block glued in; binding octavo size (7 7/8" by 5"), pagination: [iii-iv] (title page with blank verso), v-vi (dedication), 1-41; note that this copy is lacking the half-title leaf, which would have been pp. [i and ii]. ___CONDITION: Overall very good condition, the paper wraps are clean, the textblock is sound and square, and there are no prior owner markings; missing pp. [i-ii] (half title), and slight age toning to title page. ___CITATION: ESTC No. T18942. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note the following: (i) additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs, please inquire for details; and (ii) any taxes, duty, or tariffs charged by your country will, of necessity, be your responsibility. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
