Description
30/07/1849. On July 9, 1850, after only 16 months in office, a seemingly healthy Taylor died after a sudden illness of four days duration. The cause of his death is still disputed, and although his doctors blamed cholera morbus or gastroenteritis, rather general diagnoses, many suspected that he had been poisoned. He had certainly made some very powerful political enemies in the months leading up to his demise.Jose C. Keef is listed as a consul for Venezuela in Philadelphia, according to the 1852 American Almanac and Repository of Useful Knowledge. He started his stint in Philadelphia with this document, whereby President Zachary Taylor recognized his status.Document signed, Washington, July 30, 1849. “Satisfactory evidence having been exhibited to me that Jose C. Keef has been appointed Consul of Venezuela for the port of Philadelphia, I do recognize him as such…” With the seal intact, and countersigned by Secretary of State John M. Clayton.Because of his early death in office, documents signed by Taylor as President are extremely uncommon. This is just the fourth we have had in all these years.

Description
New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1949. First edition. Very Good/Very Good. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "Happy Holidays to Marion - Sincerely, Langston, Christmas, New York, 1948." A Very Good copy in like dust jacket. Publisher's blue quarter cloth, spine lettered in bronze, yellow paper sides, front cover lettered and decorated in blind, top edge blue, fore edge untrimmed. Lightly rubbed, hint of sunning to spine ends, contents slightly toned but clean. Unclipped jacket split at front fold. Head of front panel slightly creased and extremities lightly worn. The recipient, Marion Palfi (1907-1978), was a photographer who fled to the US from Germany as a refugee during the Second World War. She befriended Hughes in Harlem shortly after her arrival, and he invited her to speak to his class at Atlanta University in 1947, where he was teaching his first semester as Visiting Professor of Creative Writing (see Rampersad, p. 128). Palfi photographed Harlem Renaissance writers throughout the 1940s: her portraits are featured in Arna Bontemps's who's who of Black America, We Have Tomorrow (1945), and several of her photographs of Hughes are held among the poet's papers at Yale University's Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library. Her photographs also featured in an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in 1950, and she won a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1967. Arnold Rampersad, The Life of Langston Hughes: Volume II, 1941-1967, 1988. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket.

Description
Many black & white illus. [15] leaves, printed on rectos only (except for one leaf). Small folio (295 x 210 mm.), pictorial wrappers, fastened with black plastic clasps. [From verso of the first leaf]: Amsterdam: Agora Studio, Sept. 1980. A rare exhibition catalogue, printed in an edition of 200. Carrión (1941-89) devised this as a retrospective of his works and communications with his collaborators, for which he investigated the use of names and addresses. This catalogue, with the introduction in parallel Dutch and English, is fully illustrated with reproductions of Carrión’s earlier works and performances, including pieces such as Arguments (1973), Homage to Van Gogh (1975), and The Muxlows (1978). A near fine copy of this scarce catalogue; some sunning at the edges. WorldCat records just five examples in North America. ❧ Quant aux Livres / On Books (2008), p. 210.
