Description
Edo 1750, Suharaya Mohei. Large folding map, 170 x 200 cm. old mended worming, rebacked, pastel colors, Japanese reprint of a map printed in Henan in 1679, folds down to be 21.5 x 25.5 cm., woodblock printed, hand color. V E R Y R A R E ! *** *** *** . . AN EXCEPTIONALLY RARE WALL-SIZE MAP OF CHINA . . EXECTED BY A SHAOLIN ZEN MASTER *** The Shaolin Xi [Monastery/Temple] is a Chán [Zen] Buddhist temple at Song Shan near Zheng Zhou City, Henan Province in Dengfeng, China. It was led by Venerable abbot Shi Yongxìn. founded in the 5th century, the monastery has been famous for centuries its association with Chinese martial arts and particularly with Shaolin Kung Fu. It is also a Mahayana Buddhist monastery perhaps best known to the Western world. . The Shaolin Monastery and its famed Pagoda Forest were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010 as part of the Historic Monuments of Dengfeng. Extracted from Wikipedia. . *** A RARE EDITION: Reprinted and published in Japan by Katsuragawa Hosan in 1750, reproduced from the Chinese original of Kangxi 27 [1679]. The original Chinese edition has been exceptionally obscure and impossible to come by for over the last two-hundred years and is believed now to be lost to posterity. . *** PRINTING TECHNIQUE AND THE PAPER: The work is woodblock printed by hand on hand-made Washi paper, then hand-colored in delicate pastels. . *** CHINESE VIEW OF ANCIENT CHINA: This grand scale work covers a very large space and is quite handsome, suitable for framing and display. The map shows a full view of all of China, from the Great Wall in the North, Shanghai, the East coast, down to the oceans in the South and Hainan Island, and the coasts along he Eastern shores. This is a spectacular work, showing each province in pastel colors, with outlines, large numbers of place names, rivers & the major waterways, mountains named and located. By and large inspired to show all of the known lands considered a part of China, delineating the country and its exterior boundaries. . Japan and other islands are not shown, but boxes with notes in Chinese as to their existence and location are well documented. The lower portion has text discussing the population of the various provinces and other notes. Areas beyond the traditional lines of China, i.e.: North of the Great Wall, and to . *** RARITY OF THE MAP AND ITS MAKERS: This grand-scale and truly spectacular work is virtually never found on the market. The Shaolin Monastery monks were the original founders of the celebrated and now famous Kung-fu martial art school, located in Henan province. The priests were legendary and the most feared for their martial art prowess. They were also covert with their powerful political force in China. . *** SHAOLIN SI [TEMPLE/MONASTERY] LEGENDARY CUSTOMS: Priests who passed the highest level of Kung-fu martial art were invited to participate in a recognition ceremony. They were allowed to self-brand themselves by picking up a red-hot iron brazier that had long temple dragon decorations on the sides. The branding was accomplished by clamping the brazier between their forearms until the dragon image was branded on them. These brazier dragons are identical to the long dragon found at the top of this historic map. * Another ancient practices used was the Jieba. It is an ancient ceremony where nine marks are burned onto the head with sticks of incense. In 2007 the Chinese government partially lifted the 300-year ban of the Jieba, allowing the the mentally and physically prepared to participate in the ancient tradition. Incense or moxa was used on top of the shaved head and burned in a ceremony of dedication to the Shaolin Si [temple/monastery] by the most skilled of martial artists. * WHY THE DRAGON SYMBOL WAS USED BY SHAOLIN MONKS: The top of the map show the dragon as a symbol of the Shaolin Si. In China the dragon is the first of twelve zodiac animals and is the most powerful of all and represents the ultimate and greatest of all powers known. It is also the one and only legendary animal in the zodiac, the rest are actual animals. Because this map was conceived of, carved and printed at the Shaolin Xi monastery [or temple] by these very priests, they put the most powerful symbol at the top, a dragon. The symbolic meaning indicated that China was superior to all other nations. It was also a private pun by the Shaolin priests indicating for all to see and know that the Shaolin temple and its priests were above all others. Additionally it reminded and indicated that the Shaolin priest were the most powerful martial artists and covert political force in all China. . *** RARITY: The original Chinese edition has been exceptionally obscure and impossible to come by for over the last two-hundred years and is believed now to be lost to posterity. * Shaolin Si [temple/monastery] imprints are very R A R E ! Few references or examples exist of their woodblock printed works. This edition was a copy of the original re-carved by the Japanese and reissued. Not only is this map of great interest to Chan [Zen] Buddhists, Shaolin Kung-fu collectors, martial artists and historians, but to students of Chinese cartography, collectors and museums. . *** CONDITION: The map has been professionally re-backed in its distant past, due to the large amount of old worming. It is now solid and stable. Because of the rarity of this work, a complete map found in any condition would be now considered exceptionally R A R E ! Please review images posted to our website to observe the restored condition. . *** THE COVERS: The map has been rebound in non-original paper covers, perhaps about 100 years ago. It is contained in a brown cloth Chuan [Chitsu] folding slipcase, with ivory clasps, cloth a bit faded, one edge a bit worn, else clean & solid. . *** THE SCANS: While we have made efforts to take good digital photographs and scans of our copy, due to the exceptionally large size of the map, these photos are not of the highest quality. We therefore are additionally using copies of this map from the Oda reference book illustrations as samples of what the map is like. Please note the following digital images are from Oda: cover.jpg, illus08.jpg & illus12.jpg, the balance are from our digital camera. . Any client who purchases this map may be interested in the Japanese text found in Oda. Upon request, we are happy to provide a copy of his entry. . *** BIBLIOGRAPHY: G. Beans: A LIST OF JAPANESE MAPS OF THE TOKUGAWA ERA, Supplement A, on p.14, as #1750.1, with confirmation date of 1750. Beans gives this the title: "THE BEST COLLECTION OF ANCIENT AND MODERN WORKS CONCERNING THE HISTORICAL EVENTS THROUGHOUT THE DYNASTIES, BY THE MONASTERY OF SHAO-LIN." * T. Oda: THE WORLD IN JAPANESE MAPS UNTIL THE MID-19TH CENTURY, p.52-53, item #24 for 2 excellent color examples. Oda shows the Japanese title: REKIDAI JISEKI ZU: HISTORICAL MAP OF CHINA, reproduced from the Chinese original of 1679 by Katsuragawa Hosan, 1750. Beautifully reproduced here in full color. * Meir Shahar: The Xiaolin Monastery: History, Religion, and the Chinese Martial Arts. * Wikipedia: cans of this and most items are posted to our web site.

Description
Paris: Chez J. E. Gabriel Dufour. Printer: L'Imprimerie de Crapelet, 1805. First Edition. Full Calf. Very Good. Large paper copy! Elephantine Folio, 52 by 33 cm. 112 pp. With 72 engraved plates of tropical birds. Plates were actually printed in color, with hand-coloring then augmenting that color, to create exquisitely beautiful depictions of birds. Light scattered foxing, a bit more on the text leaves than the plates. Generally, though, the plates read quite clean, and they are always bright and fresh. Binding rebacked with original spine mostly preserved and laid on, but the rebacking obvious along the joints. And there is some loss and cracks to the mounted original spine. Rubbing along the edges. Still the full diced calf binding, which is contemporary, remains attractive, especially with its impressed diamond pattern.

Early 19th century shell-marbled boards. Very good
Description
[Augsburg, Heinrich Streiner, 1533?]. Hardcover. Early 19th century shell-marbled boards. Very good. 38 leaves, (6 pp. manuscript). With large and unusually detailed woodcut (10 x 12 cm.) on title-page revealing an extravagant banquet and a man vomiting, by H. Weiditz, with decorated woodcut initials. Set in schwabacher types with incidental fraktur. A treatise on the excesses of eating and drinking and the abuse and use of wine and other alcoholic beverages. Franck discusses several illnesses of the body and mind, real or imagined, that are caused by drunkenness - attributing a variety of social ills to due the consumption of alcohol - including blasphemy, idolatry, theft, murder and even the German Peasant War of 1525. Sebastian Franck, (c.1499 - c.1542) was a German Protestant Reformer and theologian who converted from Roman Catholicism to Lutheranism but departed from Martin Luther's views, emphasizing a mystical attitude in place of dogmatic beliefs. Franck moved from Nürnberg to Strasbourg where he was imprisoned for his views - he was expelled from Strasbourg and ended up in Ulm, where he established himself as a printer. The first edition of this treatise is believed to be published in 1528 - other editions published in 1531 have 32 leaves, and this edition believed to be published in 1533, expanded to 38 leaves. Six pages of hand written text, bound in - written by the previous owner who later edited a book by Franck. Notes written on verso of both front and back covers. Previous owner's embossed stamp to the lower corner of the title page along with hand written number - 1528. Former library stamp on bottom edge - Ambrose Swasey Library. Description
London: The Royal Society, 1925. First edition. Original wrappers. Very Good. FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS of Dirac's first major paper; a major achievement in the advancement of the new quantum theory. "Dirac's first step into a new quantum theory was taken late in September 1925. R H Fowler, his research supervisor, had received a proof copy of an exploratory paper by Werner Heisenberg in the framework of the old quantum theory of Bohr and Sommerfeld, which leaned heavily on Bohr's correspondence principle but changed the equations so that they involved directly observable quantities. Fowler sent Heisenberg's paper on to Dirac, who was on vacation in Bristol, asking him to look into this paper carefully. Dirac's attention was drawn to a mysterious mathematical relationship, at first sight unintelligible, that Heisenberg had reached. Several weeks later, back in Cambridge, Dirac suddenly recognized that this mathematical form had the same structure as the Poisson Brackets that occur in the classical dynamics of particle motion. From this thought he quickly developed a quantum theory that was based on non-commuting dynamical variables. This led him to a more profound and significant general formulation of quantum mechanics than was achieved by any other worker in this field. This was a major achievement that marked him out from others in the field. As a young, 25-year-old physicist he was quickly accepted by outstanding physicists... Dirac's quantum mechanics takes a simple and beautiful form, with a structure showing elegance and economy of concept, and linked directly with the classical theory" (Dalitz, Paul Dirac). Provenance: With stamp of City & Guilds College on front and back of wrappers; presentation bookplate from Professor William Ernest Dalby (Dean of the College) loosely affixed to first page. IN: Proceedings of the Royal Society of London, Series A, Vol. 109, pp. 642-653. London: The Royal Society, 1925. Octavo, original wrappers; custom box. Light wear to spine; mild soiling. RARE in original wrappers.

Description
Leiden: E. J. Brill, 1967. First edition. Hardcover. vg. 8vo. 264 pp. Yellow cloth covered boards with gold lettering on spine. Selected contents include but are not limited to: "The Biblical term "Servant" in relation to the Lord," "The Christian Origin of "Suffering Servant" and "Servant of the Lord" as technical terms," "Some Alleged Ancient Near Eastern Parallels to Isa. 53" and much more. Also includes an appendix, Conclusions, Bibliography and two indices. Some sunning to spine, otherwise book is in very good - near fine condition. Harry M. Orlinsky (1908 - 1992) was on the forefront of biblical studies for over four decades and was the field's most visible Jewish representative. One of the few Jewish contributors to the original “Interpreter's Dictionary of the Bible” and the only Jewish member of the Protestant translation committees that produced the Revised and New Revised Standard Versions of the Bible, (RSV, NRSV) He viewed himself primarily as a historian, whose task was to “remove the layers and crust of subsequent explanation and distortion, to reveal the authentic statement set forth by the original author.” The other author, Norman H. Snaith, was a well known biblical scholar with a more conservative stance, was famous for his criticism of aligning “Biblical Theology” with either Jewish or Christian Theology, stating rather vehemently, that they are hardly one and the same. He wrote, “The whole Bible, the NT as well as the OT, is based on the Hebrew attitude and approach. We are of the firm opinion that this ought to be recognized on all hands to a greater extent” (Dr. Norman Snaith, The Distinctive Ideas of the Old Testament, p. 185). “It is clear to us…that there is often a great difference between Christian theology and Biblical theology. [Is this really the Christ of the Bible who is presented to you in tract and sermon?] Throughout the centuries the Bible has been interpreted in a Greek context, and even the NT has been interpreted on the basis of Plato and Aristotle.”.

New York: Columbia Univ. Press, 1943. First edition. Cloth. A near fine copy with "Review Copy" stamp on free front endpaper. No dust jacket.. x, 243 pp. 8vo. Number IV of the Columbia Legal Studies, Edwin W. Patterson, ed. L.S. Rowe, foreword. "This discussion of Argentine constitutional law is particularly concerned with the role of the judicial department in the maintenance of the federal system and in protection of individual rights. There is emphasis, too, on the relationship between Argentine consitutional law and that of the United States. Many of the provisions of the Argentine constitution of 1853 were modeled on similar provisions of the constitution of the United States. The decisions of the U.S. Supreme Court have served constantly as precedents for Argentine judicial decisions, and profound knowledge of the constitutional law and history of the U.S. has helped to shape Argentine constitutional history. But the dissimilarities in social and economic conditions in the two countries have been reflected in differences in their constitutions and laws. The differences as well as the similarities are analyzed in this illuminating study," (Publlisher).
