Description
1940. Original photograph. Fine condition. Image measures 8 3/4 x 6 3/4". Matted, on heavy white cardstock measuring a total of 19 1/2 x 15 1/2". This photograph shows Albert Einstein with his two research assistants, physicists Peter Gabriel Bergmann (1915-2002, middle) and Valentine Bargmann (1908-1989, right), at the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) in Princeton, New Jersey. The photo is known to have been taken on October 2nd, 1940, by Hungarian photographer Lucien Aigner (1901-1999). The image shows the pioneering physicist staring contemplatively off into the distance, while the other two men review papers at a desk, and was taken during the period when they were working on the Kaluza–Klein (KK) unified field theory and other cutting edge theoretical physics problems of the day. It was this same year that Einstein became naturalized as a US citizen. Aigner's many photos of Einstein were among the most famous images taken by the photographer, and were said to be among the physicist's favorite photos of himself. The image is in pristine condition, with a few minor smudges and some sticker residue to the bottom of the mat. *Source: Information obtained via the Albert Einstein Archives, at the Hebrew University, Jerusalem.

Contains 90 black and white or sepia toned photographs measuring between 5” x 2” and 9.5” x 7” with some captions. Bumped spine ends and corners with foxing and chips on the protective photo paper else near fine with fine photographs. A photo album containing a mix of vintage American photographs and cutout illustrations featuring various locations, objects, and other obscurities. The landscape photographs are usually of town streets, houses, lakes, and beaches. A few are from Massachusetts, Santa Clara, Mexico, and the Shoshone Tunnel in the Canon of Grand River, Wyoming. Another photo shows the different businesses on the 100 block of South Adams Street in Peoria, Illinois with Schipper & Block, Fulton, E. J. Graves Milliner, Rosenthal Dry Goods Co., State Loan Co., and more. There are a few from the Santa Barbara (California) Fair showing a woman dressed in carnival attire, two African-American twins, and a dwarf. Other photographs are of random objects like house appliances, fruit, rabbits, horses, an older man with a fish, an eclipse, and an elephant. The still life illustrations include drawings of house tables, lamps, lakes, and the school house that Henry David Thoreau attended as well as a large illustration of Gustav Adolf Von Schweden (Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden). An obscurely interesting and eclectic collection of well-accomplished photographs displaying a curious sensibility with some attention to the art of photography.

Wien: Universal-Edition [PN U.E. 10903], 1938. Small folio. 2ff. (title, contents, instrumentation, dedication: "Dem Andenken eines Engels"), 5-55, [1] (blank) pp. Additional dedication printed to head of title: "Für Louis Krasner" Binding slightly rubbed and bumped. Dampstaining to upper margin throughout, occasionally touching music. Lacking the separately-printed violin part. First Edition of this arrangement. Redlich XX. The full score was published in 1936. The present arrangement (not credited in the edition) is by the Austrian pianist Rita Kurzmann (née Pollak, 1900-1942). She premiered it with violinist Louis Krasner (1903-1995), who had commissioned the concerto. Kurzmann was engaged in the workers' music movement and emigrated to Argentina in 1936. The double dedication-to Krasner and the "memory of an angel"-is noteworthy. The "angel" is Manon Gropius (1916-1935), daughter of Alma Mahler-Gropius (1879-1964) and Walter Gropius (1883-1969), whose early death from poliomyelitis shocked Vienna.
