Description
1933. First Edition. Signed. CONROY, Jack. The Disinherited. (New York): Covici Friede, (1933). Octavo, original orange cloth, original dust jacket. $2400.First edition of a memorable presentation copy inscribed by Conroy with a nod to his birthplace in Moberly Missouri, dated within days of publication, ""For My Friend & Comrade, Leo Lipp, with sincere regards, Jack Conroy, Moberly Mo. Nov 30, 1933 (That's Thanksgiving day for some people!)""—this rare copy accompanied by two laid-in photographs also inscribed by him, one of a young Conroy in a black-and-white photograph, inscribed below the image, ""For Leo Lipp with fraternal regards, Jack Conroy Sept 4, 1933,"" the other a color photograph of him nearly three decades later, standing beside a large commemorative plaque noting Moberly as ""the birthplace of writer Jack Conroy,"" with his inscription on the right corner of the image, in faint red ink reading, ""for my friend Leo Lipp, Jack Conroy, Chicago 10-2-61.""Conroy, ""a premiere midwestern novelist, editor, and folklorist,"" was linked ""with the region from the time of his birth in the Monkey Nest coal camp on the outskirts of Moberly, Missouri. His Irish immigrant father, who had studied for the priesthood, died in a mining accident,"" along with three of his brothers when Conroy was still a boy. Later known as the ""Sage of Moberly,"" Conroy worked throughout the 1920s as a migratory worker, and one of his first published works, Hard Winter, ""was accepted by H. L. Mencken's American Mercury in 1931, when he was digging ditches and sleeping on a sandpile. He went on to organize and edit from his Moberly home two significant journals, the pioneering Rebel Poet (1931) and the influential Anvil (1933),"" which ""published Richard Wright for the first time"" (Buhle, Encyclopedia of the American Left, 163, 51). In 1933 he published his first book, Disinherited. ""A major American novel"" (New York Times), it ""has a driving vitality… [that] springs from authentic experience"" (Rideout, Radical Novel, 184). In Disinherited, we can't help but shrink ""from the blast of the steel furnace, the stench of the rubber plant, the heat of a mid-western street"" (Madden, Proletarian Writers, xxvii-xxviii, 32). To esteemed critic Daniel Aaron, Conroy's autobiographical novel does not flinch from showing how ""excessive work brutalizes and breaks down the human spirit and how chronic unemployment can sap a man's self-respect"" (Introduction to Disinherited).Conroy's writings are particularly ""nourished by Midwestern currents of radicalism, the old labor press, and homegrown varieties of populist and socialist culture and politics… his sources are Southwestern humor, vernacular protest and indigenous radicalism""(Wixon, Worker-Writer, 72). Disinherited notably led to works co-authored with Black writer Arna Bontemps, including They Seek a City (1945). He returned home to Moberly in 1966, where he ""continued to play an important role encouraging younger writers, during a career in which by his own account he ''must have written a million letters,'"" including the recipient of this copy, radical writer Leo Lipp. Looking back, Conroy noted that he hoped, above all, that he ""succeeded in conveying something of the times, something of the terror and the uncertainty, and the actual desperation."" He tried, he said, ""to follow Whitman's injunction of vivifying the contemporary fact"" (Madden, xxix). ""In 1984 Moberly honored her 'Sage' with a day of celebrations"" (Buhle, 164). Six years later he died in Moberly. First edition, first printing. This distinctive copy with both the first printing dust jacket and a later printing yellow dust jacket laid beneath it: the latter with quotes by Erskine Caldwell, Granville Hicks, Albert Halper and others. Rideout, 182-84. Book fine; light edge-wear with small bit of chipping to spine head of very scarce dust jackets. An excellent near-fine copy with a memorable provenance.

Description
[Chicago Area]: [no publisher]. Unbound. Very Good. [Chicago]: [ca. 1970s]. A large archive documenting motorcycle and custom car culture, centering around White's Pit Stop, a Chicago-area auto retailer, and its sister store Chopper Corner. Containing roughly 175 unbound original photographs, varying in size, including roughly 75 8" x 10" prints and 100 snapshots, one illustrated company catalog, a catalog of motorcycle-themed clip-art designs, and various articles of ephemera. An archive of product, marketing, and race photos compiled and utilized by White’s Pit Stop, a retailer and distributor of auto parts for hot-rodders and drag racers. White’s first opened its doors in 1967 amid a nationwide boom in drag racing. Its proximity to the storied U.S. 30 Raceway in nearby Hobart, Indiana (a frequent location for the included images of its sponsored drag cars in action) likely supplied it with a steady stream of customers. The post-Easy Rider popularity and commercialization of outlaw biker culture spurred White’s to open Chopper Corner immediately next door to its original location in Bolton, Illinois. That business sported plenty of chrome, fork extensions, custom leather, and accoutrements that catered to the growing “chopper” enthusiasts including the Chicago branch of The Outlaws, the notorious 1% biker club profiled in Danny Lyon’s 1968 photobook The Bikeriders as well as for its longstanding feud with the Hells Angels. The photos include images of the shops interiors, special promotional events, various shop sponsored drag race cars, as well as product photography and layout materials likely used in the company’s counter and mail order catalogs. A rich visual record of the post-WWII rise of custom motorcycle and automotive cultures.

London: Printed for R P Moore, 1821 2 volumes:xxviii+[1]+313pp; 395pp with leaf of errata. Octavo (8" x 5") rebound in 3/4 leather with marbled boards and gilt lettering to spine. (Whyld Ravillous 1821:4) First edition. Jacob Henry Sarratt was a London schoolmaster who learned his chess from Verdoni and established himself as Professor of Chess. He was the leading English chess master from the late 18th century to the early 19th century. He was a frequenter of the London Chess Club which met at Toms Coffee House in Cornhill. His fee was a guinea a lesson. Under his influence stalemate was accepted as a draw. He was the first great English author on chess. His reputation was high and a revelation to English players. His works were of a pioneering character as to chess and the English language. His first excellent books were A treatise on the Game of Chess Vol 1 and Vol 2 1808. There is a prefix listing books on chess from Damiano onwards and some friendly criticism of Philidor. Vol 1 contains Different Methods of Opening the Games then follows 75 Critical Variations. Vol 2 is Teaching the Player who does not have the move how to frustrate his adversarys attack. Then there are instructions how to checkmate and a section on endings with pawns only. His next book introduced in translation the works of Damiano, Lopez and Salvio. Published in London in 1813 it deals with those old authors extensively. His next book was Vol 1 Gianutio, Vol 2 Selenus with a preface giving some details of the authors. In 1821 was published A New Treatise on the Game of Chess. It is a more exhaustive work than the 1808 publication. He was assisted in this work by his pupil W Lewis. Sarratt died in 1821. His widow then went to Paris and taught chess. In 1844 following an article in Le Palamede, describing her as aged 85 and destitute an appeal was launched which enabled her to live in comfort for the rest of her life.Condition: Former library copy from the Brooklyn Public Library with perforated stamp to title and some stamps through out. A very attractively rebound in very good condition. . First Edition. Three-Quarter Leather. Very Good. Illus. by Www.bookcollectorshop.com. Octavo.

Description
Los Angeles: Filmex / The Filmex Society. Very Good+. 1971-1985. First Edition. Softcover. (all 14 catalogues in printed wraps; the first six are staple bound) [overall the set is rated VG+, although with only a few exceptions the condition of individual items is generally Near Fine; the exceptions are 1972 (with some notable wear along the spine), 1974 (with some soiling to the thinner-than-usual paper covers), and 1980 (with some scuffing to the front cover); otherwise, most have picked up only some light handling wear]. (B&W photographs, ads, graphics) A complete set of 14 catalogues, covering the entire lifespan of what was, throughout the Seventies and a bit beyond, a major cultural event for L.A.-based cinephiles, presenting an electic mashup of new international cinema, independent features and shorts, retrospectives, gala premieres, and special programs and tributes. After its first three iterations in Hollywood (twice at Grauman's Chinese, then once across the street at the Paramount (later redubbed the El Capitan, its original name), the festival settled in to what was (in my opinion) its best venue, the Plitt Century Plaza Theatres in Century City. Not only did the Plitt's two screens permit an expansion of the programming repertoire, but the theatre's expansive lobby, the convenient parking, and the outdoor-ish-mall milieu made it an ideal gathering spot. The additional screen also made possible such glories as the 50-Hour Movie Marathon (a continuous screening of classics from a chosen genre: science fiction, westerns, musicals, etc.) that presented an annual challenge to the most hard-core film lovers. (How long could you go without sleep? Could you make it to the restroom and back between "The End" and the beginning of the next film's action? (Remember, these were the days before 15-minute end-credit rolls.) What were your eating and drinking strategies? How best to score a good seat, and hold it throughout the marathon? With apologies to Abe Lincoln, this much-beloved event called upon you to give the last full measure of your devotion to the cinema -- and was a shared-audience experience like no other.) Filmex remained ensconced in its Century City home for six festivals (1975-1980), which were definitely its best years; subsequent presentations, all of which were scattered amongst multiple venues, often miles apart, simply never achieved the same feeling of excitement and/or community, and by the middle of the Eighties Filmex -- by then plagued by political infighting and financial troubles -- was in its death throes, the final rattle being the cancellation of the 1986 festival, announced in January of that year. The festival's co-founder, Gary Essert (who had been ousted in 1983), was by then involved in setting up the American Cinematheque (which has had its own difficulties, but continues today); the annual festival itself was "reborn," after a fashion, in 1987 under the auspices of The American Film Institute, and continues to operate today under the name "AFI Fest" -- but trust me, nobody ever speaks the name "AFI Fest" with the same mixture of warmth, nostalgia, and civic pride that can be evoked by any mention (to film buffs of a certain age) of Filmex. We shall not see its likes again -- but here, in these 14 beautifully-produced catalogues, is a chance for you to revisit its glorious history. ****NOTE that the cumulative weight of these catalogues (generally printed on glossy paper stock) will require additional postage charges for international shipping; if this concerns you, please contact us for a shipping quote before placing your order.**** .

Pages are clean and unmarked. Binding is sound. ABOUT THIS BOOK: Life histories have a wide, if not universal, appeal. But what does it mean to narrate the story of a life, whether one's own or someone else's, orally or in writing? Which lives are worth telling, and who is authorized to tell them? The essays in this volume consider these questions through close examination of a wide range of biographies, autobiographies, diaries, and oral stories from India. Their subjects range from literary authors to housewives, politicians to folk heroes, and include young and old, women and men, the illiterate and the learned. Contributors are David Arnold, Stuart Blackburn, Sudipta Kaviraj, Barbara D. Metcalf, Kirin Narayan, Francesca Orsini, Jonathan P. Parry, Jean-Luc Racine, Josiane Racine, David Shulman, and Sylvia Vatuk.(Publisher).
