Octavo; removed; 22pp. ([A]6 B5, lacking final leaf (blank), else collated and complete with half title). First and final leaves rather browned, else Very Good and sound. Uncommon lecture on humanity's innate drive towards excellence and how to achieve it: "Excellence may be obtained, first, by an estimation of our powers; and secondly, by calling up before our minds the motive naturally urging these powers of exertion (p. 6). The author, Tristam Burges (1770-1853), later became a member of the Rhode Island General Assembly and then served as United States Representative from Rhode Island from 1825 to 1835.
