First volume with an engraved frontispiece, EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED WITH A TOTAL OF 919 PLATES, 96 of them hand colored. Each volume with an added facsimile title page. Pottle 79; Day, "History of English Literature, 1660-1837," pp. 164-65. Boards with a few dark spots (mostly where chafing has been covered with dye), the hinge at the front of seven volumes with paper covering gone (two other hinges partly affected), but everything still very tight; some (never serious) offsetting from plates, intermittent minor foxing, a handful of leaves in Vol I., Part IV with a repaired open tear to upper margin, other trivial defects, but still a set with very considerable appeal--full of visual interest internally, and looking quite grand in a substantial row. Although there are no signs of ownership, this is the elegantly bound Jacques Levy copy of what is often considered to be the greatest biography in any language--extra-illustrated here with an enormous number of plates. James Boswell (1740-95) was a personal friend of his subject, the main reason that this work proved to be the architect of his enduring reputation. It is a tribute to Boswell's skill as a biographer that the bulk of the text is made up of accounts by the author of situations that he himself created so that his subject would be prompted to behave in a revealing and memorable way. Day tells us that Boswell "was a consummate impresario, stage-managing the setting and 'dramatis personae' amidst which Johnson would glitter, and then providing topics and opinions to elicit the magnificent rejoinders of Johnson." The result is that we see an unforgettable portrait of a man who was flawed as well as brilliant--in Day's words, "the most fully realized figure, the most three-dimensional character, in literature." Our previous owner, New York bibliophile Jacques Levy (d. 1980), first began buying on a whim while in Paris for business. He spent the next 40 years building an impressive and eclectic library, which included travel literature, illustrated books, and fine bindings. A dedicated auction of his collection took place at Sotheby's New York on April 20, 2012, realizing more than $6 million. The present copy contains more than 900 added plates which illustrate the settings and figures populating the biography, as well as expanding the two volumes into an imposing set that is quite attractive on the shelf. The first printing of Boswell's Johnson is easy to obtain, but extra-illustrated sets seem to be quite rare: except for the present item (which went for $11,250 at the Levy sale), the last such copy we could trace at auction was a four-volume set sold in 1988..

Very good.. First edition of Scott Joplin’s celebrated ragtime composition, issued during the composer’s most productive period with his principal publisher, John Stark of St. Louis. The cover illustration depicts a sharply dressed performer stepping through a theatrical doorway while a curious onlooker peers from below. Joplin (1868–1917), often called the “King of Ragtime,” was the most influential composer associated with the style, and his partnership with Stark produced many of the era’s defining works, including “Maple Leaf Rag” (1899), “The Ragtime Dance” (1902), and “The Entertainer.” Though enormously popular when published, the piece would achieve even greater fame during the twentieth-century ragtime revival, especially after its prominent use in The Sting (1973), where Marvin Hamlisch’s adaptation of Joplin’s music introduced the composition to a new international audience. Like many of Joplin’s works, “The Entertainer” is structured as a ragtime two-step, combining the syncopated rhythms of African American musical traditions with forms derived from the late nineteenth-century dance repertoire. The dedication to James Brown and His Mandolin Club reflects the widespread popularity of mandolin orchestras and amateur musical societies during the ragtime era, which frequently performed arrangements of current dance compositions. A representative group of sheet music publications by Willie “The Lion” Smith, one of the defining architects of Harlem stride piano and a central transitional figure between ragtime-era keyboard traditions and modern jazz performance. Active in New York during the formative decades of twentieth-century jazz, Smith developed a powerful pianistic approach combining rhythmic authority, harmonic sophistication, and improvisational independence, becoming widely regarded as a “musician’s musician” and an influential mentor to figures including Duke Ellington.[1] Emerging from the uptown New York scene shaped by pianists such as James P. Johnson and Luckey Roberts, Smith helped define the stride style that grew from ragtime into a more expansive jazz idiom, frequently performing at Harlem rent parties and participating in competitive “cutting contests” that tested virtuosity and improvisational skill. Smith also published sheet music, producing piano solos, novelty songs, and popular compositions. Offered here are ten pieces reflecting the breadth of his printed output, including collaborative songs, and published folios issued by firms such as Leo Feist, Edwards Music Co., Mills Music, and Joe Davis. In his 1964 memoir, Smith recalled hearing in everyday life “another weird but musical sound… that I can still hear in my head.”[2] Uncommon on the market, we find only four first edition copies of Smith sheets available at the time of writing, with most of these not available. A deceptively simple book of poetry by three SF Bay Area poets and showing a decided beat-era influence (Ginsberg's "Howl" having been published just two years prior). With poems by William Benson ("Bill") Buck (1934-1970), an American writer born into a wealthy Marin County family; Jane Hamner Buck, who lived with Bill Buck "as husband and wife" in Bolinas, California, for six years; and Wallace Look, of whom we can only find mentioned that he was a friend of Jane's and a librarian at the CSU campus in Arcata. Since the book is showing as having been published in Bolinas, where Bill and Jane lived for a time, we can only surmise this was a project by the three friends to have their poetry published (each of the three has their own section), and asked Mallette Dean, whom Bill may have known since they both lived in Marin, to print the book for them. (Harold) Mallette Dean (1907-1975) was a well-known and highly regarded San Francisco bay area printer and illustrator whose woodcuts delight and entrance.
