Description
Lacon, Illinois, 1894. Handmade baby book on watercolor paper stitched at spine measuring 200 x 160mm and slipped into a folded sheet measuring 250 x 170mm. External wrap with a lovely original watercolor floral with the name Geraldine; tender, with splitting along foldline. Baby book comprised of 16 leaves of manuscript and original pen drawings to rectos only. Additional 4 pieces loosely inserted include: a handwritten card from Carrie Bartlett with The Baby poem pinned to footer, two child hand-tracings at various ages, and a description of Geraldine's sixth birthday party and gifts on State of Illinois Senate Chamber letterhead. A beautiful testament to the bond between a 19th century mother and her first daughter, as well as to her own artistic care and creativity. Jennie Richmond's excitement over each of the early moments of her first daughter's life is lovingly documented in this unique manuscript. Detailed and lovely half and full title pages open the piece, with Jennie using red ink to create floral and cupid motifs, and lines for manuscript text; to this she adds in dark ink and entries about Geraldine's infancy. These are no less detailed than the illustrations. "Born at Lacon, Ill on Tuesday the 18th Day of April 1893 at the hour of 1.20 O'clock A.M. unto Mr. and Mrs. Richmond," this initial entry also includes the autographs of the parents as well as the attending physician and nurse. She weighed "five pounds and one half." Geraldine's "first picture was taken at five and one half months by Grant Rose. Oil painting made by Jennie L. Fitch...First tooth when ten months old. Learned to creep forward when the metronome was put before her. First step July 7 when almost 13 months old. Plaster of Paris hand taken when 3 months old." Geraldine's first bath, a lock of her hair, her first ring -- these and so many other tiny moments are made monumental in this book. It becomes clear not only that Geraldine is adored, but also that she is surrounded by art, music, and intellectual activity. Jennie's husband Elijah, an attorney, afforded them a comfortable lifestyle that could allow all this. Census records show that Jennie and Elijah went on to have three more children -- all sons. And on being widowed, Jennie took up living with Geraldine in a single household. Geraldine, by 1940, had become a music teacher with her own studio. A lovely, unique and research rich piece touching on the history of maternity, the history of infant education, women's domestic lives, women's education and art, and genealogy among other fields. U.S. Census 1900, 1910, 1920, 1930, 1940.

Description
1899. ANTIN, Mary. FROM PLOTZK TO BOSTON. With a Foreword by Israel ZANGWILL. Boston: W. B. Clarke & Co., 1899. First edition. 80 pp. 8vo., light reddish brown wrappers printed in black. Extremities of wrappers chipped, darkened. An acceptable copy of a fragile item. Included in the Masterworks of Modern Jewish Writing Series in 1986. This is a first edition of Antin's first book, a record of her voyage from her native Plotzk, White Russia, to America. Mary[ashe] Antin (1881-1949) spent her childhood in a small town in the pale. Like other immigrant children, in the days when grade levels were determined by competence in English rather than age, thirteen year old Antin squeezed herself into a desk meant for a kindergarten child. Her intelligence and evident literary gifts quickly impressed her teachers. Eager to demonstrate how much an immigrant child could accomplish in only four months, one of Antin's teachers sent her composition "Snow" to the periodical Primary Education. After seeing her name in print for the first time, Antin was determined to become a writer. She attended the Girl's Latin School of Boston, and later New York Teacher's College of Columbia University. Incredibly, FROM PLOTZK TO BOSTON was written when the author was only eleven years old! "...it was at that age that she first wrote the thing in Yiddish, though she was thirteen when she translated it into English" (Israel Zangwill, Foreword, p. 7). Antin's story bravely articulated the Jewish immigrant experience - "for, despite the noble spirit in which the Jews of America have grappled with the invasion, we still know too little of the feelings of the people themselves" (ibid). Thirteen years later, Antin would publish the work for which she would be best remembered, her autobiography entitled THE PROMISED LAND (UJE, Volume 1, 337). Jewish Women in America, Volume 1.

Arizpe: November 24, 1834. Very good.. [4]pp., on a small bifolium. Untrimmed. Minor soiling and toning. Scarce 1834 decree of the Sonoran state government concerning the regulation of tobacco cultivation and sale. A further sixteen articles go on to delineate the process for obtaining licenses, the establishment of inspectorial and judicial positions for the administration of the industry, and other regulations affecting farmers and business owners. A scarce document of tobacco regulation in the northern desert province of Mexico; OCLC locates only one copy, at Berkeley.

Description
London, 1845. Very good.. Small broadside, 8 x 10.5 inches. Minor discoloration and wear at edges, short closed edge tear. Scarce stock certificate that conferred title to land in the small Gulf Coast town of Trespalacios, Texas, offered for sale to Londoners at the very end of Texas' period as an independent republic. The certificate granted the holder a small lot, 2500 square feet (25 x 100 feet), from a block of thirty-two and enjoined him or her to improve the block within five years of its purchase. The land seems to have been offered directly by the town itself through a land office maintained on Leadenhall Street in the City of London, with its interests registered with and approved by the "General Texan Consulate," that is, the Texas Legation that was located above a liquor store in St. James's. The dates on this broadside are interesting, as it seems to place its printing between the annexation of Texas by the United States in December 1845 and the official transfer of power in February 1846. The town, also known as Tidehaven, located inland from Tres Palacios Bay and southwest of Bay City, subsisted through low-level industry, agriculture, and shipping during the late-19th century, but fell out of existence in the midst of the Great Depression. We locate copies at Yale, SMU, and the University of Houston.

Description
Washington: Cornelius Wendell, Printer, 1857. 35th Cong., 1st Sess. SED11. 775pp, disbound else Very Good. At midstream of the Buchanan administration, his disastrous Kansas policy alienates his Democratic support in the North; even pro-slavery northerners find it difficult to stomach the election frauds and violence necessary to sustain the Lecompton government there. Buchanan's Message also dwells on Utah, and the "fanatical spirit" of the Mormons, who threaten "open rebellion" against the national government. "This is the first rebellion which has existed in our Territories; and humanity itself requires that we should put it down in such a manner that it shall be the last." He also discusses the Walker filibustering expedition in Central America, and other matters of foreign policy. The Interior Department's report on Indian Affairs includes material on Texas and the Southwest, Utah, and the Pacific Northwest. [offered with] REPORT OF THE SECRETARY OF WAR. DECEMBER 5, 1857. IN MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, TO THE TWO HOUSES OF CONGRESS AT THE COMMENCEMENT OF THE FIRST SESSION OF THE THIRTY-FIFTH CONGRESS. VOL. II. SED11. 572pp, disbound. Contents clean. Very Good. Material on the Utah expedition, with Stewart Van Vliet's report of his interview with Brigham Young, who said "that the Mormons had been persecuted, murdered, and robbed, in Missouri and Illinois, both by the mob and State authorities, and that now the United States were about to pursue the same course; and that, therefore, he and the people of Utah had determined to resist all persecution at the commencement, and that the troops now on the March for Utah should not enter the Great Salt Lake Valley..." Reports on turmoil in Kansas include Governor Walker's Message on election day, September 1857. Appendix H is Francis Bryan's Report concerning operations of a party assigned to explore the route from Fort Riley to Bridger's Pass. "Being the report of the Secretary of War, the volume contains sizable quantities of material about the West." Graff. Description
London: Weidenfeld and Nicolson, 1987. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good+. Cloth; dust jacket; 8vo; pp. 195. Inscribed by the author to Lauren Bacall, "For Betty, with much love, from Antonia, 14 May 1987." (Lauren Bacall was born in the Bronx as Betty Joan Perske, and only close friends and loved ones used her real name. Antonia Fraser is the widow of Harold Pinter, who directed Bacall in Tennessee Williams's "Sweet Bird of Youth.") Spine tips and corners lightly rubbed, otherwise book is fine. Dust jacket somewhat age-toned, and a little wrinkled along the edges. A Jemima Shore novel. Lauren Bacall (born in the Bronx as Betty Joan Perske, 1924-2014) was an American actress known for her distinctive voice and sultry looks. Howard Hawks (director, producer, screenwriter) changed her first name to Lauren, and Perske adopted "Bacall," a variant of her mother's maiden name (of Romanian Jewish descent), as her screen surname. The young Lauren Bacall, worked as an usher at the St. James Theatre, and as a fashion model. She made her acting debut on Broadway in 1942, at age 17, as a walk-on in "Johnny 2x4." By then, she lived with her mother on Bank Street, Greenwich Village, and in 1942 she was crowned Miss Greenwich Village. Though Diana Vreeland is often credited with "discovering" Bacall, putting her on the cover of "Vogue" in 1943, much of the iconography surrounding Bacall she cultivated herself with the help of Nancy Hawks, Howard Hawks's wife, who advised Bacall on clothing, elegance, manners, and taste. Even Bacall's trademark voice required arduous training -- at Hawks's suggestion, Bacall worked with a voice coach to make her voice lower and deeper. Her screen debut as the leading lady in the Humphrey Bogart film "To Have and Have Not" (1944) made her an instant star. She married Bogart in 1945, and continued in the film noir genre alongside him in "The Big Sleep" (1946), "Dark Passage" (1947), and "Key Largo" (1948). She starred in the romantic comedies "How to Marry a Millionaire" (1953) with Marilyn Monroe, and "Designing Woman" (1957) with Gregory Peck. She co-starred with John Wayne in his final film, "The Shootist" (1976). Bacall worked on Broadway in musicals, earning Tony Awards for "Applause" (1970) and "Woman of the Year" (1981).

Description
[Carmel, Ca: the restaurant, circa, 1937. Menu (17.5 x 13.5 cm.), [4] pages on cream color laid paper. Wood block illustration to front panel. A breakfast menu from the dining room of the first hotel built in beautiful Carmel-by-the-Sea in 1889. The Pine Inn still operates at its original location, a few blocks from the Carmel Beach on Ocean Avenue, with the dining room now an outpost of the Il Fornaio group of Italian restaurants. This menu offers three breakfasts, all fairly simple yet organized by price: "Thirty-Five Cent Breakfast", Fifty Cent...", and "Seventy-Five Cent Breakfast De Luxe", which was also served to guests on the American Plan. The rear panel contains a description of the scenic beauty of Carmel and of its unique architecture. Not a word about golf though. The text goes on to describe access to Carmel, via stage from the train station at Monterey, and by the recently completed Carmel-San Simeon Highway. A woodcut illustration of the iconic Lone Cyprus graces the front panel of the menu. Very light horizontal crease to the menu; a bit of light age-toning, otherwise very good.
