Note: The 1611 King James Bible was printed in a 59-line folio format in 1611, 1613, 1617, 1634, and in 1640/39. The 1611 He Bible constituted a distinct edition with the reading "and hee went into the citie" in Ruth 3:15. The second edition 1613 She Bible was printed in subsequent years (1613, 1617, 1634, 1640/39) with the variant "and she went into the citie." The second edition is frequently found in a variant state with leaves mixed in from different years, but most here appear to originate from 1617. Arguably the most important book ever published in English. Its influence can best be summed up by G.M. Trevelyan who stated that "for every Englishman who had read Sidney or Spenser, or had seen Shakespeare acted at the Globe, there were hundreds who had read or heard the Bible with close attention as the words of God. The effect of the continual domestic study of the book upon the national character, imagination and intelligence for nearly three centuries to come, was greater than that of any literary movement in our annals, or any religious movement since the coming of St. Augustine." Macaulay said of it, "If everything else in our language should perish, [the King James Bible] would alone suffice to show the whole extent of its beauty and power" (PMM 114). Description
Paris: Éditions Lemarget, 1930. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine. 34 cm. 79,[6] pp. including 3 etchings by Sanyu, plus frontispiece portrait of the poet after Hwang Shen. Modern ochre red silk over boards, brass plate stamped through with title in Chinese on front board, original wrappers bound in. In red cardboard portfolio with red ribbon tie. Portfolio moderately worn, torn at corners. Brass plate faintly scratched and lightly oxidized, else fine, in a very good portfolio. Numbered 56 of 290 copies on vélin d'Arches (of a total edition of 306), specially bound in silk with a brass title cover plate. T'ao Ts'ien (365-427) (best known in English today as Tao Qian or by his birth name, Tao Yuanming), was a major Chinese poet of the Six Dynasties period, regarded as a founder and leading representative of the Fields and Gardens movement. Tao's translator is Liang Zongdai (1903-1983), a Guangxhi-born poet who had arrived in Europe in 1924 to study Western languages. He dedicates the work to his friend Jean Prévost, recalling that he had kept some of the poems hidden in a drawer for fear that they would contribute to the mass of poor translations of Chinese masterpieces: "I read them to you, however, one evening in the glow of a nightlight on the banks of the Seine. And, to my great surprise, they found prompt approval in you. From then on, your encouragement allowed me calmly to pursue my work, the fruit of which was this little volume." Liang returned to China in 1931 and would translate works by Shakespeare, Goethe, Blake, Rilke, Paul Valéry, and other European poets and thinkers into Chinese. The poems are illustrated with three original etchings by the celebrated Chinese-French painter and printmaker Sanyu (or Chuang Yu, 1901-1966), often hailed as "the Chinese Matisse." Sanyu, who, like Liang, moved to Paris in the early 1920s as part of the first major generation of Chinese artists to study in Europe, remained in the West after his youth, settling in Montparnasse. His period as a printmaker was relatively brief, particularly his work in etching and drypoint, which for practical reasons he abandoned for linocut in 1932 (several years before Matisse began working in the same medium). The Chinese landscapes in the present etchings are an important departure from Sanyu's usual subjects of nudes and still lifes, helping complete the picture of his marriage and transmutation of traditional Chinese and Modernist mediums and techniques.

Description
New York: [NAACP], 1935. Very good -. Reproduction of typed 11" x 8½" leaves with handwritten inscription, string-tied in 11¾" x 8¾" wrappers. Pp. [6], 41, [6]. Very good minus due to lacking front wrap; rear moderately edge worn; inked notation to title; some light edge wear, creasing and toning. This is a survey on the status and welfare of African American workers in the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) written for the NAACP by a leader of its "Joint Committee on National Recovery" (JCNR), John P. Davis. According to a 2025 article in the Michigan Journal of Race & Law, Davis founded the JCNR as well as the Negro Industrial League, and "was the first person to recognize the race discrimination being written into federal law." His work "exposed and challenged" injustice within the National Recovery Administration and broader Jim Crow New Deal era, "underscored the constitutional necessity of federal intervention and pushed for a new New Deal that would combat the oligarchy and racial inequality that placed democracy in crisis." This survey (per its full title, a Report of the Chief Social and Economic Problems of Negroes in the TVA) was the result of "two weeks investigation of actual conditions of Negro workers" in the TVA, which had been tasked by President Roosevelt in 1933 with improving quality of life in the seven-state region reeling from the Great Depression. It focused on racial discrimination "in the matter of employment and training" as well as segregation in "housing facilities." Rich with statistical data, the report analyzed injustice from interviewing to wages, working conditions and "high-handed methods" of white superiors. Various projects were described, and names and anecdotes given. It also ran the text of a letter from a labor union to a senator protesting "the employment of negro electricians" and an appendix with evidence of Davis' research. Rare and vivid documentation of racial injustice in the New Deal era TVA. OCLC shows three holdings (at Howard, Harvard and Smith) and a copy on microfilm at Kent State University.

Description
1968. [African American] [Fashion & Beauty] Miss Black America beauty pageant contestants and winners photo archive dating from the 1968-1981. Black women combated racial discrimination by creating their own space to celebrate Black beauty in an all-Black pageant. Starting in 1970, Miss Black America was originally a local Philadelphia area contest to protest the lack of black women in the Miss America pageant. With the support of the NAACP, the pageant gained nationwide coverage, eventually being televised by NBC in 1977, a day before CBS aired the Miss America Beauty Pageant. Archive of 9 silver gelatin photographs measuring approximately 8" x 10" with two measuring 7" x 9" This archive of mostly press photographs show Black women adorned in sashes, tiaras, and ornate evening gowns competing for the crown. Pageants were a means for young women to begin their careers in beauty and fashion, as well as gain financial reward or scholarships to further their education. Many photos have the original publisher's article pasted or printed en verso or on the margins. The earliest photo from 1968 shows three beautiful smiling Black contestants as Saundra Williams of Philadelphia is crowned as Miss Black America next to the other two finalists, Linda Johnson and Theresa Taylor. A photo from 1975 shows the smiling Helen Ford representing Mississippi as she's chosen to represent Miss Black America held in Gary, Indiana. A studio portrait from 1977 shows the reigning Miss Black America, Twanna Kilgore, posed in a one piece bathing suit. The article en verso states that she will be shown live on the first network television presentation of the pageant on NBC as she crowns the next winner. Another studio photo of her is shown promoting the same broadcast. Two photos from 1979 show winner Donna Mitchell being crowned with tears in her eyes as she holds a large trophy, the other photo shows her and another contestant, Kim Peterson, in workout attire shaking hands. One photo from 1979 shows Miss Black Florida finalists lined up in dotted dresses and sashes representing their cities before one lucky finalist is chosen to represent Florida in the Miss Black America pageant. Two photos from 1981 show two different women, one unnamed woman holding the mic at the time of the pageant, unsashed, possibly a host. Another shows winner Sharon Wright seated in a studio wearing a light pantsuit and wearing the "Miss Black America" sash. Modeling in fashion and print has historically been dominated by white women, reflecting a bias in beauty standards in the United States. Overall very good condition. These images show black women claiming space in the still often exclusionary fashion and beauty world of the mid-late 20th century.

Description
1950. Industrial drilling operations, engineering crews, and heavy extraction equipment, dating to the 1950s-1960s. The group records workers assembling, servicing, and operating large drilling rigs and mechanical boring equipment in both field and industrial shop settings. New hydraulic systems, diesel-powered rigs, and mobile boring equipment allowed construction and engineering firms to reach deeper foundations, quarry sites, utility corridors, and oil-bearing formations with unprecedented speed. Archive of 9 large-format silver gelatin and color photographs, each measuring 8" x 10". Several photographs focus closely on the machinery itself: hydraulic drill assemblies suspended by cranes, pipe sections and cylindrical boring units laid out for repair, cable-fed drilling towers, and articulated rigs positioned against exposed rock and excavation walls. Workers appear handling drill heads, aligning equipment, inspecting mechanical components, and assisting with assembly procedures. One image includes a Motorola mark, suggesting possible corporate or engineering documentation use. The photographs preserve the visual language of postwar industrial extraction industries, when drilling technology expanded rapidly alongside highway construction, mineral exploration, petroleum infrastructure, utilities work, and large-scale civil engineering projects. Following World War II, mechanized drilling became central to the expansion of North American infrastructure and resource extraction. Minor surface wear and toning, overall very good condition. These photographs document the labor required to sustain that industrial growth with crews working directly beside dangerous and mechanically complex equipment, maintaining the machinery that powered mid-century construction, transportation, and energy development.

RISM C3798. "Corelli exercised an unparalleled influence during his lifetime and for a long time afterwards. ... To Corelli belong equally the distinctions of being the first composer to derive his fame exclusively from instrumental composition, the first to owe his reputation in large part to the activity of music publishers, and the first to produce 'classic' instrumental works which were admired and studied long after their idiom became outmoded." Grove Music Online Johann Christoph Pepusch (1667-1752), the editor of the present edition, was a German composer, theorist, and antiquarian who pursued his career in London; he, like many other German, French, and English composers of his time, drew heavily on the Italian style and music theory in his approach to composition. The title page asserts that these sonatas "also make compleat Lessons for the Harpsicord," raising intriguing questions about 18th century performance practice and the adaptability of chamber compositions for solo instruments. An attractively printed edition.

Very occasional minor soiling to blank lower margins; occasional minor showthrough; small stains to title, with small circular publisher's handstamp to inner margin. Hopkinson 46C(a). Gluck's work is a tragedy in four acts to a libretto by Nicolas-François Guillard after Guymond de la Touche's Iphigénie en Tauride, itself based on Euripides's work of the same name. "Iphigénie en Tauride was the crowning achievement of Gluck's career, a result of the combination of his lifelong experience as an opera composer and a libretto which is arguably the best he ever set." Jeremy Hayes in Grove Music Online It was first performed in Paris at the Opéra on 18 May 1779 "with excellent singers; Rosalie Lavasseur sang Iphigénie, Larrivée Oreste, Legros Pylade, and Moreau Thoas. ... The opera had a great success immediately, and even Grimm wrote of it - I do not know whether this is melody, but perhaps it is something better. When I hear Iphigénie I forget I am at the opera; I seem to be listening to a Greek tragedy, with music by Lekain and Mlle Clarion. It was the crowning point of Gluck's career. Guillard had provided an excellent libretto, more classical than Goethe's poem, less Christian and more ruthless; and Gluck had seized on the contrast between Scythians and Greeks, upon the perfectly dramatic figures of Iphigenia and Orestes, and had produced a work which both re-created a part of Greek tragedy and at the same time foretold a new world." Cooper: Gluck, p. 258.

Description
Hard cover. Three quarter leather bound with marbled paper covered boards. Two leather spine labels, gilt lettering to the spine. Octavo. [xxvii] 412pp. Two owner signatures to the title page including that of R. W. Steele. A contemporary newspaper article tipped in. Shelf wear to covers and edges. Sound binding. A First Edition of the groundbreaking work by John Russell Bartlett that cataloged unique American slang, colloquialisms, and regionalisms, providing definitions, etymologies, and usage examples from across the country. It was the first comprehensive dictionary of its kind, capturing the evolving language of a new nation and serving as a cultural snapshot of 19th century American life, with entries from Native American, Spanish, and various regional dialects. Robert Williamson Steele, the elected Governor of the Territory of Jefferson, opened the first session of the Jefferson Territorial Legislature in Denver City in November 1859. This was prior to the Act of Congress organizing the free Territory of Colorado signed by outgoing President Buchanon in 1861.

Description
1914. New York: Sully & Kleinteich, n.d. Three consecutive annual calendars, each consisting of 52-53 weekly leaves (each page with an aphorism from a Kipling work), within a heavy paper wrapper bound at the top with rawhide. Leaves and wrappers printed in orange and green (1914 & 1915) or orange and black (1916). These undoubtedly-unauthorized American calendars came out during the first three years of The Great War across the Atlantic (ironically, they bear Kipling's favorite Indian symbol of good fortune, the swastika). Each page (week) bears a quote from a Kipling work, such as "And a woman is only a woman, but a good cigar is a smoke." Sully and Kleinteich was a publisher of paper goods such as moving-picture books for children, and calendars. "1914" reads "New York | Sully and Kleinteich" on the front cover and has the S&K monogram on the rear; "1916" has just the S&K monogram; "1915" has no indication of publisher at all, but clearly matches the other two. "1914" and "1915" are in remarkably near-fine condition; "1916" is lacking most of its (horizontal) spine and there is some edge-wear to the wrappers. All three are uncommon. Not in Livingston or Stewart.

Muir was also a scientist in observations of a broad range of subjects - geology, glaciology, botany and zoology. His writings were poetic in the beauty of nature and compelling in preserving for the enjoyment of future generations. In the 1890's, the exploitation of the West's resources and use of Federal lands was a concern for conservationists (environmentalist today). Muir's many articles and books had a significant impact on the public and policy makers to expand protection, conservation, and preservation of forests and public lands. His first book, The Mountains of California, along with Muir's second book, Our National Parks, 1901, advanced his efforts to influence Presidents and generate public support have created National park system the United States and other countries have today. This book is a collection of two published articles in 1872 and 1873. The first one is relating to a 1868 "ramble" from San Francisco to the Sierras and was the second article to be published in 1872. The second is from Muir's first excursion to the Hetch Hetchy Valley in the fall of 1872.
