Description
Paris, 1922. Very good plus.. x,84,[2]pp. Original grey printed wrappers. Minor toning, partially unopened. An early work by noted theologian and Civil Rights activist, William Stuart Nelson. Nelson (1895-1977) was a native of Kentucky who served in World War I. He would go on to work as an university president, teaching at Howard University before becoming the first Black president of Shaw University, and later filling that office at Dillard University. He was a noted advocate of non-violence who worked with both Martin Luther King, Jr. and Mahatma Gandhi. He graduated from Howard University in 1920 and then attended schools in Europe before attaining his BD from Yale in 1924. The present work was published during his time in Europe. In the present work, he discusses the history of African Americans in the United States, from slavery to the present moment. Two map charts show the distribution of the Black population in America in 1910 and the number of lynchings from 1889 to 1922. A very nice copy of this relatively scarce work.
