Description
New York: V.G. Audubon, 1856. Second octavo edition, the first edition with fully colored backgrounds. Complete in seven volumes. With 500 beautiful hand-colored lithographed plates. Bound in publisher's full brown morocco decoratively stamped & lettered in blind on covers, spines lettered in gilt, raised bands, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Very Good+, wear and scuffing to bindings, a couple of joints rubbed; light foxing to some prelims and occasionally to margins of text leaves but not to the plates, a few plates with minor darkening, brown spot in margin of plate 377 intruding to a few adjacent leaves. Inner hinges of vols. 5, 6, and 7 repaired with archival mending tissue. Booksellers tickets on paste downs. A handsome set of Audubon's ornithological masterpiece in its original bindings. It is perhaps the most important American color-plate book of the 19th century. The plates, accompanied for the first time in the octavo edition by the text, were reduced and modified from the original Havell engravings for the double-elephant folio. The plates were reduced by camera lucida and some of the backgrounds entirely changed or greatly modified. To the original plate count included in the double-elephant folio edition, the octavo edition adds 65 new images for a total of 500 plates, making it "the most extensive color plate book produced in America up to that time" (Reese). Included for the first time are seven new species and 17 others, previously described in the Ornithological Biography but not illustrated, are also shown for the first time. The original compositions were altered so that only one species is depicted per plate.

First edition of this extremely scarce and important book which contains the announcement of Scheele’s discovery of oxygen,
Description
Upsala & Leipzig: Magn. Swederus... zu finden bey S.L. Crusius, 1777. First edition of this extremely scarce and important book which contains the announcement of Scheeles discovery of oxygen, made independently of, and two years prior to, Priestley. Scheeles monumental discovery was made by 1773; he had begun his experiments on oxygen in 1770. The publication of this book was delayed due to the fact that Tobern Bergman was two years late in delivering his promised preface. The work is fittingly bound with Bergmans own lectures on the nature and application of chemistry, a rare work that is not included in his collected works Opuscula Physica et Chemica. The independent discovery of oxygen is here described and the composition of air by two gases is illustrated. One of these is necessary for combustion and respiration and it is absorbed by a number of solid substances and can be artificially produced; the second gas (nitrogen) prevents combustion. Scheeles fire-air (oxygen) could be produced from saltpetre, from black oxide of manganese, from oxide of mercury, etc. The photo-sensitive nature of chloride of silver was announced, a discovery that led to photography (Dibner, Heralds of Science, 41). Scheele (1742-1786) was an experimental genius; he made more discoveries of first-rate importance with fewer opportunities and scantier appliances than any one else, and his skill, insight and power of illuminating experimental results have never been surpassed, if indeed, they have ever been equaled (Ferguson II.331).Bergman (1735-1784) was a member of the Swedish Academy and from 1767 professor of chemistry at Uppsala. He had a high regard for the younger Scheele and did everything in his power to bring him to the notice of the scientific world. Bergman owed to him his transition from obscurity to a leading position in the world of science. (Partington, III, p. 208) His Essay on the General Usefulness of Chemistry and its Application to the Various Occasions of Life (thus the title of the English edition of 1783) gives a general view [of] medical, oeconomical, and technical chemistry, halurgy, geurgy, theiurgy, salts, earths, inflammable substances, metals, waters and airs. (Partington III, p. 184) Bergman remained a follower of the phlogiston theory all his life.OCLC: Scheele: Burndy, Chemical Heritage Foundation, Cornell, Madison, NLM, Smithsonian, Stanford, UCLA, Yale. Bergmann: Cornell.* Scheele: DSB XII.143-50; Horblit 92; Partington III.205-34; Waller 11225; Gernsheim, Hist. of Photography (1969), pp. 32-33; not in Duveen, Ferguson, Young, or E.F. Smith collections.*Bergmann: Partington III, p. 184, F.. 8vo, 3 ff., 16, 155, (1) pp. Engraved vignette on title & one folding engraved plate, both depicting chemical apparatus. Bound with:BERGMANN, Torbern. Anleitung zu Vorlesungen über die Beschaffenheit und den Nutzen der Chemie, und die allgemeinsten Verschiedenheiten natürlicher Körper. Aus d. Schwedischen übersetzt. Stockholm and Leipzig, Swederus. 1779. 8vo, 95, (3 blank) pp. Niedersächsische Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek and Berlin records call for xxxi preliminary pages as well as 95 numbered pages. JW. consignment. Shelved []. Brad Meltzer was born April 1, 1970 and has had an eventful career. A very successful writer, he has won awards for his Justice League of America comic books and has been on the bestseller lists for various works including the "Ordinary People Change the World" series, of which "I am Amelia Earhart" and "I am Abraham Lincoln" stood at the top. Meltzer is credited as being partially responsible for finding the missing American flag raised at Ground Zero of the World Trade Center on 9/11, being the one to unveil it at the National September 11 Memorial & Museum in New York. Meltzer is also notable for preserving the house which Superman was created in, founding the Siegel & Schuster Society named for Superman's creators and auctioning the story of the house for $100,000 which went further towards it's maintenance. Meltzer has cited former president's Bush and Clinton as fans of his works, even being one of four authors to entertain at Barbara Bush's 90th birthday party. Christopher Eliopoulos was born September 30, 1967 in Queens, New York. He is known as a prolific letterer, in particular for his work on the Savage Dragon comic series which he hand-lettered on request by the comic's creator Erik Larsen, who preferred the look to the now commonplace computer-generated fonts. Eliopoulos would go on to design the fonts for Marvel Comic's in-house computer lettering unit, as well as contributing lettering work to Valiant Comics and DC comics. He did illustration and writing work for Dark Horse comics on some Star Wars stories. Eliopoulos is also well known for his comic strip Desperate Times who's art style is greatly inspired by Bill Watterson's Calvin and Hobbes comic series, the art of which also inspired his illustration work on the "Ordinary People Change the World" series. "Ordinary People Change the World" is a children's book series which focuses on various historical figures and their lives and contributions to the world. There are 36 entries in the overall series with 3 books on the DC superheroes Wonder Woman, Superman, and Batman, and several compilation books. The first entry, "I am Amelia Earhart" and third entry "I am Abraham Lincoln" would stay at the top of the bestseller lists for children's books of 2014, the rest of the series remaining highly popular. 1384939.
