Description
1946. U.S. Army Air Forces photographs, 1946, document racially integrated groups of American servicemen operating across Pacific bases and occupied Japan prior to the formal desegregation of the armed forces under Executive Order 9981 in 1948. The images place Black and white soldiers within shared military environments at a transitional moment between wartime mobilization and postwar occupation, capturing both daily life and operational infrastructure. The archive situates these servicemen within the logistical networks that sustained American presence in the Pacific, including air transport routes linking Hawaii, Guam, Kwajalein, and Japan, while also recording the early occupation landscape in Tokyo. Archive of 31 black and white silver gelatin photographs. Pacific Theater and United States, primarily dated 1946. Photographs measure approximately 3.5 x 4.5 inches, with many bearing handwritten captions on verso identifying locations and subjects. Sites include Hickam Field adjacent to Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, Harmon Field in Guam, Kwajalein Atoll, and urban scenes in Tokyo including Hibiya Hall. Additional images show desert terrain in the United States. The archive includes views of military bases, aircraft, and personnel, including a photograph of a Black soldier holding a Thompson submachine gun in a tropical setting and another of three Black servicemen standing before a Senior Petty Officers Club. Aircraft depicted include the Douglas C-54 Skymaster and the Boeing B-29 Superfortress. Several images appear to have been taken from within or alongside aircraft, including a view down the wing of a C-54. In 1946, the U.S. military remained officially segregated, though integrated working conditions frequently emerged in overseas deployments, particularly within logistical and air transport units. The presence of Black servicemen across multiple operational sites reflects their significant role in maintaining supply chains and infrastructure in the Pacific during and after World War II. The inclusion of occupation-era Tokyo alongside major airfields and transport hubs provides a visual record of the geographic scope of American military operations in the immediate postwar period. This archive offers material for examining race, military organization, and the global reach of U.S. forces at a moment just prior to institutional desegregation. Light wear consistent with handling; overall very good condition.

On March 15, 1915, film producer Carl Laemmle officially opened Universal City Studios on a 230-acre ranch in the San Fernando Valley, creating the world's largest, self-contained "movie city". Featuring its own police, fire and hospital services, it was designed for integrated production, offering early visitors tours for 25 cents to watch silent films being made. (Wikipedia) Within the Universal Laboratory building was the continuity and cutting department, as described in pencil on verso. This is where scenes were assembled in accordance with the continuity and pasted together. The department employed women mostly. There is an ink stamp and holograph note on verso: "English Edition".

Description
Beverly Hills CA: Spectator International. Very Good+. 1967. (Vol. 3, No. 5). Magazine. [modest wear along spine, very slight bend at top right corner]. (B&W photographs) A remarkably rich issue of this always-interesting periodical, which tried (with mixed success) to be both a serious (albeit artsy) "cinema journal" and an industry-hip-newsy-insider entertainment publication. (Many of its contributors -- notably editor Curtis Lee Hanson, who later dropped the "Lee" -- went on to successful filmmaking careers.) This issue kicks off with an editorial comment that proved to be prescient and certainly demonstrated the magazine's "insider" cred: the statement that BONNIE AND CLYDE -- then only in rough-cut form, lacking a music score and second-unit scenes -- was "the most significant American movie in years." The magazine then proceeds to put its page-count where its mouth is, devoting a three-part feature story to the film: an on-location report of its production (by future Oscar-winning screenwriter Robert Towne, no less), plus interviews with star/producer Warren Beatty and director Arthur Penn (both conducted by Hanson). And also in this issue: a special feature on director William Wyler (who was just about to embark on his final directorial effort, FUNNY GIRL), consisting of an interview and a film-by-film commentary on his entire filmography, both by Hanson also. Not enough yet? How about: a preview (by L.M. Kit Carson) of the upcoming D.A. Pennebaker documentary about Bob Dylan, DONT LOOK BACK, and a nice little tribute to Errol Flynn, "Requiem for a Swashbuckler." All this, and more, in a 50-page magazine -- the only weak point of which, that I can see, is the sappy soft-focus wrap-around cover photo, by actor-turned-photographer-and-middle-aged lecher John Derek. .
