Description
1818. EARLY COLOUR LITHOGRAPHY - WITH POEMS IN OVER 100 LANGUAGES BARTH, Johann August. Pacis annis MDCCCXIV et MDCCCXV foederatis armis restitutae monumentum orbis terrarum de fortuna reduce gaudia gentium linguis interpretans.75 leaves mostly with lithograph borders printed in as many as five colours, one lithographed colophon leaf picturing a printing press and 5 leaves letterpress translation. Folio (455 x 355 mm), contemporary boards with new endpapers. Breslau: J. Barth, [1818]. A splendid copy of the extremely rare first edition of possibly the earliest book using multiple colour lithography, published to celebrate the peace of 1814-15. It contains poems in about 100 different languages printed on the rectos only in a great variety of printing types. Barth was a well-known printed and publisher at Breslau and introduced lithography into Silesia. The present work first appeared in 1816 in a smaller edition containing only 43 poems and was printed in letterpress with colors added by hand, thus lacking the lavish lithographed decorations. This new edition is printed in colors using the new technique of "Steindruck." Nothing like this was to appear until Thomas Shotter Boys "picturesque Architetcure in Paris..." in 1839 and Owen Jones's Plans, elevations, sections and details of the Alhambra published between 1842 and 1845.In this book the decorations range from small headpieces to full-page designs. Some light darkening, offsetting and spotting, but nevertheless an extremely appealing copy PROVENANCE: Tetschner Bibliothek, red inkstamp on title verso; Cornelius J. Hauck, bookplate. Berlin 5356; Brunet I:673; Burch pp.175-77; Friedman 117; Graesse I:300; McLean p.74; Aloys Senefelder 38; Twyman (1990) p.129; PMM (1963) II:140.

Description
[Reading, PA]: [No Publisher], 1975. A photographic archive documenting the beginnings of Berks Filmmakers in Reading, PA in 1975, an independent film cooperative that continues to this day. Linda Adlestein, wife of Berks co-founder Gary Adelstein, took candid portraits of a number of attendees, many of whom were major figures in experimental cinema and underground film including Jonas Mekas (called "The Godfather of American Avant-Garde Cinema), actor and Warhol associate Ondine, queer cinema pioneer Jerry Tartagalia, Beverly Grant Conrad (actress and filmmaker dubbed "the queen of the underground" by Jack Smith), and Tony Conrad, a filmmaker better known as an experimental music composer associated with The Velvet Underground (he gave them their name, in fact). He can be seen in a print shown in the main archive photo playing film draped around his own head with a violin bow. Quality contemporary photographs are uncommon for many of the artists who attended. The archive consists of 15 8"x10" mounted photos, five 8"x10" prints, eleven labeled envelopes containing about 220 negatives, 15 plastic sleeves with hundreds of negatives, nine contact sheets for some of the negatives, and a holograph letter from Spiral magazine editor Terry Cannon returning the photos to the photographer. The archive is housed in a mailing box addressed from her to her friend Albert Kilchesty, the previous owner. Very Good condition overall. The negatives show some alternate images of the large prints, but also some new faces. For example, these may be the only photographs in existence of Guido Ragini. That’s mostly because Guido Ragini didn’t actually exist, but was a persona fabricated by Jerry Tartaglia, the queer cinema pioneer. Reputedly he created the persona expressly for the Berks Filmmakers. Guido was an Italian filmmaker who had to use a translator to communicate with fellow attendees. Jerry/Guido would whisper in the ear of his friend (possibly named Dan) who would then translate into English for the crowd. Guido was supposed to next appear in Chicago, but Jerry soon ran out of motivation and let the word spread that Guido died in a bar fight somewhere on the road to Chicago. Still, Jerry was already a celebrity in such circles and probably wasn’t fooling anyone, so this is essentially Fluxus performance art in the middle of an experimental filmmakers’ conference. Some additional photos from related events are included. Mounted photos are of Bill Brand, Beverly Grant Conrad, [2 photos], Tony Conrad, Robert Gaylor, Barry Gerson [2 photos], Amy Greenfield, Howard Guttenplan, unsung gay experimental film pioneer Roger Jacoby, Jonas Mekas, J.J. Murphy, Ondine, Mark Rappaport, and Japanese experimental filmmaker Iimura Takahiko. Negatives include: Bill Brand, Tom Chomont, Beverly Grant Conrad, Tony Conrad, Storm de Hirsch, Ed Ehmswiller (a noteworthy artist for sci-fi paperbacks in addition to his filmmaking), Greg Gantz, Ernie Gehr, Barry Gerson, Amy Greenfield, Howard Guttenplan (including two sheets of portraits of him), Peter Hutton, Roger Jacoby, Jonas Mekas, J.J. Murphy, Ondine, "Guido Ragini" [Jerry Tartaglia], Mark Rappaport, Pat Sloan, and Iimura Takahiko. A collection of black-and-white original portraits of experimental filmmakers in the mid 1970s-- some now well-known, some obscure-- that documents a heady time in American cinema: while Hollywood (having missed the '60s) was having a renaissance and film culture was at its peak.

Description
1940. A substantial archive documenting the trucks, drivers, terminals, accidents, repairs, freight operations, and working life of the Michigan Tri-State Motor Express trucking company of Benton Harbor, Michigan, dating primarily from the late 1930s through the 1950s. The company grew from the Mammina Brothers transport business established by Joseph and Benjamin Mammina after their experience with heavy transport vehicles during American military service in World War I. By 1938, Joseph Mammina's independent Michigan Tri-State Motor Express operated sixty-four trucks across four Midwestern states, part of the enormous transformation of American freight hauling that accelerated during the interwar and postwar years as trucks increasingly challenged railroads for regional cargo traffic. Photo archive of 122 loose silve gelatin photographs, each measuring between 2.5" x 3.25" to 3" x 4". The photographs show fleets of branded Michigan Tri-State trucks and trailers lined in depots and freight yards; drivers posing beside International, GMC, and other commercial tractors; loading docks; warehouse operations; trailers marked "Michigan Tri-State Motor Express"; long-haul rigs parked along highways; winter driving conditions; damaged trailers; overturned freight trucks; accident recovery scenes; and mechanics standing beside wrecked equipment. Several photographs bear handwritten dates including 1940, 1941, and 1950. Drivers appear repeatedly across the archive, often photographed informally beside assigned vehicles, emphasizing the labor force that sustained Midwestern freight circulation before interstate highways transformed American trucking after 1956. This collection showcases an intimate documentation of a regional trucking company during the period when motor freight became essential to American industrial and commercial distribution. During the Depression and World War II years, trucking firms carried factory goods, agricultural products, machine parts, and retail freight between Midwestern industrial cities and rural markets, operating within a rapidly expanding road network shaped by New Deal infrastructure projects and wartime logistics demands. The accident scenes and roadside breakdowns visible throughout the archive also preserve the hazards of early commercial trucking before modern highway engineering, federal safety regulation, and standardized freight systems reshaped long-distance transport. Minor curling and edgewear, some edges clipped, and some toning throughout. Overall good condition. Collectively, the photographs document the human and mechanical infrastructure of regional freight hauling during one of the decisive transitional periods in twentieth-century American commerce.

Description
New York: Grosset & Dunlap / Madison Square Books. Very Good in Very Good dj. [1940] (c.1934). Reprint. Hardcover. [a good sound copy, tiny fraying and very slight exposure of boards at lower tips but no other significant wear, bookplate on front pastedown, one-time owner's name plus date & place of purchase and brief comment (all in ink) at top of front endpaper, small ink check-mark next to each title in the table of contents; the jacket has some wear along the top and bottom edges, with shallow chipping along top edge (mostly at top of spine), light scuffing/soiling, one small closed tear and associated short crease at bottom right corner of front panel]. The first "Ellery Queen" book that wasn't a novel, originally published by Frederick A. Stokes in 1934. The contents, "a veritable banquet of thrills for all lovers of Problems in Deduction" (a reference to the subtitle on all of EQ's early mystery novels), were stories that had appeared in various magazines (some under different titles than here) during 1933 and 1934. The tales, all of which had "The Adventure of" prepended to their titles for purposes of this collection (probably a conscious nod to the original Sherlock Holmes stories, which employed the same titling practice), are: "The African Traveler"; "The Hanging Acrobat"; "The One-Penny Black"; "The Bearded Lady"; "The Three Lame Men"; "The Invisible Lover"; "The Teakwood Case"; "'The Two-Headed Dog'"; "The Glass-Domed Clock"; "The Seven Black Cats"; and "The Mad Tea-Party." A feature carried over from a number of the early novels was the book's Preface by the mysterious "J.J. McC.," a friend of the Queens, who here relates conversations he had with both Ellery and his father Richard, on the topic of his being asked to write this very foreword! It's interesting to note that for this edition, G&D employed the same "silhouetted crook with a gun" jacket art that they had used for a couple of Raoul Whitfield novels in the early 1930s. .
