Description
1765. First Edition. (AMERICAN REVOLUTION) (STAMP ACT) ELIOT, Andrew. A Sermon Preached Before His Excellency Francis Bernard, Esq… And the Honorable House of Representatives, Of the Province of the Massachusetts-Bay in New England, May 29th 1765. Being the Anniversary for the Election of His Majesty's Council for the Province. Boston: Green and Russell, 1765. Slim octavo, period-style full speckled calf gilt, black morocco spine label, uncut; pp. (3-5) 6-59 (1). $3800.First edition of the influential Boston pastor's most famous and most controversial work, his May 29, 1765 Election Day Sermon delivered two months after passage of the incendiary Stamp Act—boldly proclaiming ""when tyranny is abroad 'submission… is a crime'""—one of only 700 copies published.Macaulay wrote that the Stamp Act of 1765 will be remembered ""as long as the globe lasts."" It marked a sharp break from the past as ""the first direct, internal tax ever to be laid on the colonies by Parliament; indeed, the first tax of any sort other than customs duties"" (Morison, 185). ""In the summer of 1765, as colonists… waited for the stamp tax to go into effect, voices of protest grew louder and drew support from many ministers"" (Stout, New England Soul, 270). In particular, the sermons of pastors such as Jonathan Mayhew and Andrew Eliot ""took on new vigor, new relevance and meaning."" In Eliot's May 29, 1765 Election Day sermon, published the same year, his words were infused with ""direct power… for to proclaim from the pulpit in the year of the Stamp Act and before the assembled magistrates of Massachusetts that when tyranny is abroad 'submission… is a crime' was an act of political defiance"" (Bailyn, Ideological Origins, 6). Mindful of his audience, which included Britain's powerful Massachusetts-Bay Governor Francis Bernard, Eliot here underscores the colonists' objections by invoking their rights as Englishmen and the tradition of common law. ""Our fathers dearly bought the privileges we enjoy,"" he declares: ""It is evident, when they left their native land, they thought the rights of Englishmen would follow them."" Yet throughout, even as he might couch his language, there remains his ""unexpectedly fierce insistence"" that submission to the perversion and misuse of power is not simply a crime: it is ""an offence against the state… an offence against mankind… an offence against God.'""Eliot's sermon distinctly offered a ""fine articulation of a tradition of thought familiar to every New Englander, if not to every American, exemplifying at the outset of the Revolutionary era a substratum of belief that underlay the developing rebellion."" Soon his correspondence, ""initiated by the publication of the election sermon, expresses with unique clarity the transformation of election-sermon platitudes into revolutionary imperatives. It is probably the most vivid expression of this transforming, or triggering, process in the entire literature of the Revolution"" (Bailyn, Faces of Revolution, 111-13). In 1768, confronted with the arrival of a British warship and four regiments of troops, Eliot would write to Harvard benefactor Thomas Hollis: ""'To have a standing army! Good God! What can be worse to a people who have tasted the sweets of liberty!'… He was convinced, he wrote, that if the English government 'had not had their hands full at home they would have crushed the colonies"" (Bailyn, Ideological, 114). ""Eliot weathered the Revolutionary War in Boston, and at the request of General Washington made the official thanksgiving sermon on March 28, 1776. He died on September 13, 1778"" (Harvard University). First edition: title page found with ""Price two shillings,"" or without (this copy), no priority established. Published by the printers to the House of Representatives, who were paid ""in July of 1765 for about 700 copies"" (Adams, Independence 12a). Without half title. Adams, Controversy, 65-8a. Newberry Library, American Revolutionary War Pamphlets 187. Evans 9964. Sabin 22124. Text fresh, last few leaves with expert paper repair to upper gutter's edge.

Together, eight volumes. Small octavo, contemporary three-quarter red morocco gilt, marbled boards and endpapers, top edges gilt, uncut and partly unopened. $1650.Selected works of Henry Austin Dobson, beautifully bound with frontispiece portraits of Dobson, Steele, Walpole, Goldsmith, and Mademoiselle de Corday.Dobson's poetical contributions to Trollope's St. Paul's magazine from 1868 to 1874 attracted widespread popular and critical attention. Inspired by the French poets Theodore de Banville, Marot, and Villon, Dobson led the movement to introduce their forms into English verse; in 1876 he published the first original ballade written in English, and followed with English versions of the rondel, rondeau and villanelle. A superb prose writer, Dobson is also known for his critical works and biographies. Included here is his memoir of Horace Walpole, as well as his Eighteenth Century Vignettes and Four Frenchwomen (containing brief sketches of Mademoiselle de Corday, Madames Roland and de Genlis, and the Princesse de Lamballe), and a volume of miscellaneous works with essays on Goldsmith, Steele, Boswell, Luttrell, and more. Description
Basil: Sebastian Henricpetri, 1585. SECOND EDITION. Woodcut historiated initials. Contemporary calf, covers ruled in gilt, spine label; front joint cracked but holding, paper generally toned, but overall a very good copy. Second edition of Cardano’s important work on dreams, followed by a collection of earlier works by Cardano, gathered here for the first time. He explains to the reader how dreams are caused, how to interpret them by classification, and goes on to describe over fifty of his own dreams. “Cardano is unusual among Renaissance writers on dreams, in that he both records a good many of his own dreams, displaying keen interest in them, and has a highly developed theory about the causation of dreams and the method of interpreting them.” He also includes a general discussion on sleep, insomnia, and supernatural dreams, all supported by examples. The second part contains his autobiography, first published in 1544, as well as medical, philosophical and mathematical writings, including an interesting treatise on gemstones and colors. Cardano (1501-1576), Italian mathematician, adventurer, scientist, and the most famous physician in Europe, was a prodigious writer, detailing his experiments with magnets, the occult virtues of gems, the astrological significance of comets, electrification by friction, pumps, syphons, the water screw of Archimedes, and machinery for raising sunken vessels. He was arrested by the Inquisition in 1570 after an accusation of heresy by the Inquisitor of Como, who targeted Cardano’s De rerum varietate (1557). The inquisitors complained about Cardano's writings on astrology, especially his claim that self-harming religiously motivated actions of martyrs and heretics were caused by the stars. In his 1543 book De supplemento almanach, a commentary on the astrological work Tetrabiblos by Ptolemy, Cardano had also published a horoscope of Jesus. All of his non-medical works (including this one) were prohibited and placed on the Index. Adams C 693; BM STC, German Books, p. 182; Durling 832; Wellcome I, 1306.

Description
[c. 1920] Pair of dancing Loie Fuller bookends, bronze-toned cast metal. About fine, with a few tiny nicks, and traces of patina here and there. Overall, a gorgeous rendering of this influential dancer. Loie Fuller (1862-1928) was a pioneering American dancer who invented the "Serpentine dance," a type of "skirt dance" in which she would mesmerically swirl her billowing silk robe, and made many innovations in stage lighting, utilizing under-stage lighting, phosphorescent materials, mirrors, and other revolutionary techniques. She achieved great popularity around the turn of the century, particularly among avant-garde audiences in Paris. Named after the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts that took place in Paris in 1925, Art Deco was a design movement that flourished in the 1920s and 1930s, characterized by sleekness and geometric lines, and influenced by industrialism, Cubism, Bauhaus, and archaeological discoveries, including King Tut's tomb in 1922. During the height of the movement, Art Deco bookends were popular objects to collect, due to their beauty, affordability, and practicality. Notably, New York City is home to a few of the world's most famous examples of Art Deco architecture: the Chrysler Building, the Empire State Building, and Rockefeller Center. This collection of Art Deco bookends features a wide and wonderful variety of designs and metal types. The sculpted works span historical figures like Roycroft arts-and-crafts community founder Elbert Hubbard (1856-1915), modern dance pioneer and inventor of the "Serpentine Dance" Loie Fuller (1862-1928), and the legendary literary pair Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) and his muse Beatrice Portinari (ca. 1265-1290). Other designs include lions, serpents, whales, seamen, puppies, and cherubs, among many others. The bookends were made by some of the most prominent American art metal companies of the first half of the 20th century, including PM Craftsman (est. 1911), Armor Bronze (est. 1910 as "National Metalizing Company"), Frankart (est. 1924), and Pompeian Bronze Company (est. 1889 as the "Galvano Bronze Company").. Bronze-toned Cast Metal. Near Fine. 4" x 3.5" x 7". .

San Francisco, California: Carlos White Printing Co., Steam Printers, 1884. First Edition. Good. First edition; 8 3/4 x 5 3/4; pp. [1], 4-71; off-white wraps, printed and ruled with an elaborate border; chips to tips of spine; faint spotting and foxing to wraps (not affecting readability); in good condition. A scarce work from an illusive San Francisco publisher, it documented the proceedings of the California branch of the Grange - officially named The National Grange of the Order of Patrons of Husbandry. The social organization, being the oldest American agricultural advocacy group with a national scope, was founded after the Civil War - in 1867. It would claim credit for the ideas of rural free mail delivery, the Farm Credit System, etc. What was most unusual of the organization at the time was that women and teenagers, "old enough to draw a plow," were encouraged to participate in it. Furthermore, it was mandatory that four of the organization's elected positions could be held only by women. Many local granges were established, including the California State Grange, which was founded in 1873 in Napa.

Description
folio, 3 pages, plus stamp less address leaf, free franked by Clarke as postmaster of Vansburgh, some browning to paper, few splits and tears, else in very good, legible condition. Caleb Clarke, evidently a former New Hampshire resident writes a friend, describing his home in Genesee County and travels from New York to New Hampshire and return. Clarke writes: "… I regret to acknowledge that the place in which I reside is so very obscure as to be thought unworthy of a name in Say's map of New York – Still the place existed long before Says map was published or Franklin received its charter – I can give you directions which if followed will bring you to the spot at once – You will doubtless find Batavia – in the North East corner of Sheldon, on the East bank of the Tonawanda Creek & only a few rods below the junction of Stony Creek (also nameless on Says map) with the Tonawanda – Our country is unlike the north part of Genesee County, being unfavorable to the growth of wheat – the land is excellent for grazing & for coarse grains, & fruits of most kinds are abundant – the surface is quite uneven & may be called hilly – the water is pure - & the inhabitants very healthy – being either Yankees or the direct descendants of Yankees – Antimasons generally – and of course anti Administration men – though now & then there may be found a true & steadfast republican as for example your humble servant. I was extremely gratified to learn that you enjoy so much health that fortune has placed you in a situation in which you can support so numerous a progeny – a difficult task I should think for one man – especially in New Hampshire – where the fees of the profession are so trifling – It is well for some of you gentry of the Grain Bag – (an article by the way never seen in this state) that you have no Erastus Root to revise & dock your fee bill – Ira Goodall Esq – may thank his stars that his lot was not cast in the State of New York. He is not in my opinion a man of genuine talents, nor of the most profound learning. His capacity seems however tolerably well adapted to many transactions & he knows well enough how to frame a declaration on a common note of hand – However his piety shall shield him from the malice of the wicked - & therefore enough said of him. When in 1828 I passed through New Hampshire I fell in company with a Mr. Smith from your village … & hot headed abuser of Genl Jackson, Isaac Hull &c - I traveled with him from Concord to Boston – he was on the whole an intelligent man though labouring under aberration of mind which perhaps he has outgrown since the contest which produced his disorder – There was also in our company a young man from Concord, who seemed so well acquainted with Dartmouth College & its inmates officers &c at a certain period that I supposed he must have been a graduate from that Seminary This opinion was strengthened by the erudition he displayed in casting learned epithets upon the same Isaac Hill above mentioned – Before leaving this gentleman's company I ascertained that he was what in our diction is called the ninth part of a man & had acquired his knowledge & learning by making coats for you collagers – a good enough way to climb the hill of science – after ascertaining this fact I could not but notice that his manner savoured a good deal of Buckram. My journey from Hanover to the City of New York was one of the most delightful jaunt I ever took - & there was but one thing wanting to make it altogether so – I should have waited a day in Salisbury – but my eagerness to get along together with the pressing solicitations of my company changed the determination I had formed of stopping - From Providence to New York by water the pleasure I experienced at every swelling of the wave… cannot well be told – On the morning following my embarkation at Providence I arose before the sun – I was on the promenade deck to the East no trais of land were visible – on the South Long Island was seen stretching out its verdant shores at the distance of 15 or 20 miles & on the North the shores of Connecticut were visible at the same distance … If you should ever travel for pleasure I would recommend this trip as one that would give satisfaction – And what hinders you – You have "no crying within your walls" whether at home or abroad - & after you arrive at New York you could not deny yourself the pleasure of a ride in the North America to Albany at the rate of fifteen miles an hour – a slow pace it is true compared with the swiftness of passage acquired by the locomotive engines of the present period in England. I shall surely expect in the course of a few years you will call on us and spend the evening when the National rail road shall be completed – especially if, as is anticipated, our cars shall perform their journeys at the velocity of a hundred miles an hour - … Caleb Clarke"

Description
San Francisco, 1969. Four-panel brochure, 8.5x11 inches, some toning and edgewear. Parody corporate report, made for distribution before a Standard Oil stockholders meeting in San Francisco. Rear cover invites the reader to a protest sponsored by Liberation News Service, SDS, and other groups, featuring Kenny Horsten and a speaker from the Black Panther Party's UAW caucus. Sample paragraph from the report: "Our holdings become more diversified with each passing year, as we seek new sources of return. Our chemical divisions have moved heavily into the production of pesticides. Unfortunately, many of the migrant farm workers that harvest America's crops have become seriously ill and even died from these substances, but the growers are most enthusiastic about our products. Our domestic market will continue to grow; and Vietnam provides a captive market for our defoliants.".

Description
Philadelphia: American Sunday-School Union, n.d. (Circa 1826). A preacher in England bumps into an old Sunday School student of his named John Robins. The two get to talking, and Robins tells how he managed to lose an eye, and a best friend at Trafalgar, and then a leg in the course of his naval career. He spent quite a while "in the service of sin" but eventually found his way back to the Lord, and now is perfectly happy to have been "a brand plucked out of the burning." Well, to each his own. Worldcat dates this pretty little book at 1826. It stands 4 1/4 inches tall and is bound in quarter leather over marbled boards, with gilt spine lettering. Foxing, but legible.. 16mo. 32 pp. b/w wood engraved illustrations.
