Description
Antwerp (Gilles Coppens), 1557 [Colophon 1560]. Tall 4to. (12 1/2 x 8 3/4 inches), contemporary vellum with ties (renewed), and new endleaves; title lettered on the spine. First Spanish edition. Notwithstanding the presence of the woodcut title-page from the Latin edition and one leaf substituted [A6] from the Italian edition, the text and collation conforms to the Fairfax Murray copy [No. 187] of the first Spanish edition. That Coppens also published editions in French, German, Italian and Latin may account for the anomalies in our copy. In a cloth clam-shell case. This book begins with one the most remarkable title-pages of the 15th century, an example of Dutch mannerist ornamentation, executed in chiaroscurrtrait. It is followed by the Dedication to Philip II, the Prohemio de la obra, the Declaracion, and by 134 large (7 inches in diameter), medallion portraits of Roman and German emperors, all printed in chiaroscuro from blocks engraved and cut into wood by Josse Gietleughen after designs by the author. This splendid series of portraits, the first book to employ chiaroscuro woodcuts for illustration, were adapted after ancient coins by Hubert Goltzius (1526-1583). In those cases where he failed to find a satisfactory image as a model (fourteen Carolingian and Ottonian monarchs), Goltz decided instead to print a blank roundel accompanied by the appropriate text. The text in extremely erudite and is mostly concerned with the biographical data of the personalities depicted. The collation is: A, a-b, D-Z, Aa-Ee6, Ff-Gg4 (last blank, lacking) = 176 leaves, unnumbered. The paper used for the various editions of this work is invariably subject to discoloration and often the over-inked blocks have corroded the paper. Our copy has been carefully restored, including the repair of worm tracks and paper loss. Signatures. a & b should be marked B & C. They exactly imitate the same leaves in the 1557 Latin edition with the same blanks occurring, but with the following exceptions. No. 113 Charlemange and 131-132 (one portrait) Henry IV now supplied; the oval portrait of Philip and Maxmilian has disappeared, its place being taken by letterpress. Thus there is one more to add to those in the Latin edition, making 134 portraits in all. That of Ferdinand [155] is a new one; it is a bust only without crown, orb or scepter. The Spanish edition appears for sale far less frequently than the Latin, German, French and Italian editions. See: Fairfax Murray 187. Adams G840. Palau 103463. THE RARE SPANISH VERSION

Description
Northumberland County, PA, 1849. Robin, Joseph Craven (1806-93). Manuscript medical daybook / ledger. Approx. 260pp., 19 or 20 pages pasted with clippings (primarily poetry). Northumberland County, PA, 1849-62. 328 x 203 mm. Original reverse calf stamped in black, worn. A few leaves in front loose, light toning and spotting, but a very good example. Medical ledger and daybook of Dr. Joseph Craven Robin, the first physician to locate and practice in Elysburg, Pennsylvania. "He first read medicine with his brother William at Sunbury, completing his professional preparation at the University of Pennsylvania, and in 1828 began practice at Sunbury. The following year he removed to Elysburg, at which point he was the first physician to locate permanently, and he was in active practice there for forty-two years, his field covering all the eastern part of Northumberland County and the adjoining portions of Montour, Columbia and Schuylkill counties. He was of the old 'saddle-bag' doctors, and in spite of the hardships of a physician's life in his day survived all his fellow practitioners who were in practice at the time his career began, living to the advanced age of eighty-seven years. He retired from active professional labors about 1870" (Floyd's Northumberland County Genealogy).

Description
London: David Mallet, 1777. 308 x 238 mm. (12 x 9 1/4"). Five volumes.. IMPRESSIVE CONTEMPORARY TREE CALF, covers with gilt-rule border, raised bands, spines elegantly gilt in compartments with floral sprays at center and in corners, one red and one green morocco label, gilt-rolled turn-ins, marbled endpapers. With frontispiece portrait. Front pastedowns with engraved armorial bookplate of Merthyr Guest. ESTC T139449; Day, "History of English Literature 1660-1837," pp. 116-17. Three abrasions (one the size and shape of a little finger, all refurbished, though still noticeable), wear of not great importance to extremities (mainly lower corners), a few minor nicks or abrasions to the leather, trivial browning or marginal smudges in the text, but still AN EXTREMELY ATTRACTIVE SET on the shelf, REMARKABLY CLEAN, SMOOTH, AND FRESH INTERNALLY, with spacious margins, and with bindings that are lustrous and that feature especially attractive spines. This is a very handsomely bound large format set of writings by the dashing and eloquent Bolingbroke (1678-1751), focusing primarily on English history and political philosophy, but also including his letters to his friend Alexander Pope. Early in his public life, Bolingbroke was famous as a Restoration rake who was said to have been seen sprinting through a communal space intoxicated and in the nude. But after his life took a more sobering turn, he entered the government of Queen Anne as a Tory and was instrumental in the peace negotiations with France that ended the wars of Louis XIV. And when considered as a whole, his body of writings must be seen as the work of one of the great political thinkers of his era. According to Day, his political philosophy "rejected the divine right of kings and admitted the premise of the Bloodless Revolution, that the will of the people shall govern the nation. . . . He proposed the elimination of party and the strengthening of a truly representative Parliament through a broad franchise." And "in his proposals for a disinterested survey of history, he has been called the first Englishman truly to sense the continuity of history and to observe contemporary events as workings of fundamental human conflicts paralleling the past and developing out of it." But Bolingbroke's reputation among his contemporaries was damaged by shady financial dealings, dissolute ways, and vicious attacks on his opponents, all of which led to his writings being dismissed or overlooked for many years after his death. DNB observes that modern scholars view him as "a substantial, if flawed, political figure in Anne's reign and as a brilliant, if eventually unsuccessful, political writer in the age of Walpole. . . . Bolingbroke's writings tell us much about the ideological divisions that persisted under the first two Hanoverian monarchs. Although he lacked good sense and political judgement, Bolingbroke was widely read, wrote well, and did make a sincere effort to provide the disparate elements of the parliamentary opposition with a coherent political ideology and a moral platform." As one would expect, this tall, attractive set comes from a gentleman's library, that of Thomas Merthyr Guest (1838-1904), a retired army major and justice of the peace who came from a distinguished Welsh family that made their fortune in iron and steel works. His wife was the writer and philanthropist Lady Theodora Grosvenor Guest (1840-1924), daughter of the second Marquess of Westminster..

Description
Printed on recto only. Thick paper postcard, mailed. Genoa: Salvatore Ala, 1977. Invitation to Merz’s 1977 show with Salvatore Ala (1941-2014). Ala founded his gallery in Milan in 1974 and hosted exhibitions for Boetti, Kounellis, and a number of Arte Povera artists. Keith Haring’s first Milan exhibition was held at Ala’s gallery. This example of the postcard invitation is particularly interesting because it was mailed to another important art dealer of the period, John Weber. Fine. Mailed to John Weber.
