Description
London, 1776. No Binding. Very Good. 19 x 26 inches. Original outline color; reinforced fold separation & wear, slight losses due to abrasion, mended split into surface; nice, dark printing impression; overall very good, especially for a map originally issued folded. A scarce, handsomely engraved edition of the great Evans map intended for use by British officers serving in the American Revolution. This edition appeared as both a separate and in a work called the American Military Pocket Atlas, styled the "Holster Atlas," as it was intended to provide a geographic overview for British officers being shipped off to battle the rebellious colonists. This was a new state, second issue, of the often-used Kitchin-Jefferys-Sayer plate but with significant changes (".so strangely altered as to be almost unrecognizable,"). An important improvement in this state was the expansion of the inset at upper left to contain all of the Great Lakes not already shown on the map proper. The shapes of Lake Ontario and Erie have also been updated, and the map was expanded to include some of Canada north of the lakes. Many of the other changes, especially in the Ohio area, reintroduced Evans' original delineations that were distorted in the earlier states of the present plate. Forts are shown in abundance in New York, especially in the Lake Champlain region, and in Pennsylvania. Roads and trails are also shown throughout. Stevens Map XV, see also XIV.

Description
Aliford Bay, B.C.: November 24, 1912. Very good.. [3]pp., in ink, plus a separate smaller one-page short note or fragment. Old folds, creasing, some soiling. A unique manuscript account of an encounter with the First Nations Skidegate Concert Band headed by Arthur Solomon, in a letter home from an itinerant worker in Queen Charlotte Islands, British Columbia. An extract of the letter reads: "...I hope to be able to keep my letters up to date. You will understand that shifting about during the fishing and sleeping in tents it was very difficult for me to attend to letter writing. The life of a nomad has its charms but it also has its drawbacks.... I should have liked very much to have been at home during the visit of the Ladies Band and to have met some of the musicians. We have a fine band here: all Indians. They have now for three years won all the competitions in B.C. for Indian bands and their conductor, a white man named Solomons is talking of taking them on tour through Eastern Canada and thence to the United Kingdom. He will rig them out in the old Indian dress which most of the young men may have seen but never worn. In fact they run strongly to American clothes of the latest cut. Solomons' idea is all right but I am afraid the Indian agent will not consent to their going owing to the danger of their getting whiskey in a country where there is no penalty for supplying them...." The tradition of First Nations marching bands began in 1867 with the St. Mary’s Mission brass band. Typical of the militaristic and assimilationist style of residential school education, it became a popular feature of both Catholic and Protestant missions in the Canadian territories, as well as the Salvation Army. The bands themselves were taught European instruments and songs, though often, as exemplified in this letter, would perform in traditional Native dress. The Skidegate Concert Band was founded in around 1907 by a Haida man named W. E. Ross. By 1911 they were under the tutelage of Arthur Solomon, mentioned in this letter, a white musician from Victoria. He coached them through multiple wins of the J.S. Gray Cup competition held at Prince Rupert, and in 1913 they won permanent title to the cup in a battle of the bands judged by the visiting Duke of Connaught. The reported friction between Solomon and the Indian Agency in the letter rang true - Arthur Solomon was ordered off the Skidegate reserve by the Department of Indian Affairs for supplying alcohol to the community. The letter writer’s observations regarding the band’s use of Native dress (“the old Indian dress which most of the young men may have seen but never worn”) speaks of the rather appalling irony in how Indigenous people had been asked to perform to white colonial audiences. Records indicate that the Skidegate Concert Band in fact had a uniform of dark green with gold trim, so the implication is that Solomon had proposed a second specifically Native costume be prepared for the posited European tour. This correlates with the requests made of Gertrude Bonnin, a contemporary Dakota writer and concert violinist, who was often asked to wear Native dress when speaking or performing for white audiences. A 1901 photograph of the nearby Nelson’s Cornet Band from Vancouver shows the Tsimshian band members wearing tabards painted with traditional designs over collared shirts and ties in some cases, with most band members posed with their brass and woodwind instruments, excluding the two ostentatiously aiming bows and arrows. The level of agency with which these bands were afforded to determine their own cultural representation when performing is unclear, but as hinted by this letter, there were clearly influenced by white ideas of race, performativity, and entertainment.

Description
1973. Cooper, Howard L. Vietnam War photographs and promotion letter, circa 1970s, document African American noncommissioned officer service within an integrated U.S. Army and the formal evaluation structures governing advancement during and immediately after the conflict. The material centers on Sergeant Cooper's presence within a deployed unit in Vietnam alongside fellow soldiers and local civilians, and extends into the postwar administrative process through a typed recommendation for promotion dated 1973. Together, the photographs and letter situate the archive within the broader context of African American military participation during a period marked by both expanded combat roles and documented racial disparities in discipline, assignment, and promotion within the armed forces. Archive of 20 vernacular photographs and one typed letter. Vietnam and United States, circa 1970s. Photographs include 15 color Kodak snapshots measuring approximately 5 x 3.5 inches or smaller, depicting Sergeant Cooper and fellow soldiers, primarily in uniform, in Vietnam. Four black and white Agfa snapshots measuring approximately 5.5 x 3.5 inches show Cooper, other servicemen, and Vietnamese children. One Polaroid photograph includes two African American men standing beside Cooper with handwritten captions. Additional images depict base life and group interactions within the unit. Accompanying the photographs is a typed letter recommending Sergeant Howard L. Cooper for promotion, signed by Transportation Supervisor Alice J. Griffin, Fort Ord, California, dated 14 November 1973, one page measuring approximately 8 x 10 3/8 inches. African American soldiers served in large numbers during the Vietnam War, with many attaining noncommissioned officer roles that required both leadership within units and navigation of institutional structures that did not always provide equitable advancement. The inclusion of a formal recommendation letter alongside the photographs connects personal service to bureaucratic recognition, documenting how military authority evaluated performance in the postwar period. The combined visual and documentary record offers material for examining race, leadership, and military administration in the Vietnam era. Photographs show light wear; letter with pinholes, discoloration, and minor ink smear at upper edge; overall very good condition.

Description
Folio, 9 ½ x 13 inches, 5 pp. Margins trimmed quite tight to title, with some loss to publisher information on rear cover, small chips, else near fine, with the hand colored lithographic cover by H.C. Maguire in fine condition. Near Fine.. An interesting piece of sheet music perhaps shedding light on the term “guinea” as it applies to Italians which, though it originated in Europe, migrated to the United States. Lingard’s song begins “I’m poor Italian guinea pig boy, Straight from Florence I come with my stock.” The song was anthologized later in Lingard songsters. The song is proof that the term was being used in performance and theater circles before the mass arrival of Italians in the United States. “Guinea” was also widely used to describe people of dark complexion during the period, stemming from the Guinea region of West Africa. With an attractive lithographic cover of a cheerful enough looking boy extending his hand. We find two copies of this sheet, at Oxford and the British Library, with none held in the United States.

Description
Washington, D.C.: Decker and Company, 1885. Very good; some dust soiling to boards.. A pocket-sized guide to exercise by Hartvig Nissen (1857-1924), a Norwegian gymnast who brought Swedish gymnastics and exercise to the United States. He begins the volume by asserting the importance of physical activity to one's happiness, and outlines the strengths of the German and Swedish "systems" of exercise, and how they informed his own. He follows the discussion with examples of exercises. Unlike fitness today, which is heavily reliant on cardio and weight-bearing exercises, Nissen's system focuses almost exclusively on calisthenics. The book provides diagrams illustrating proper posture and positioning, alongside descriptions of each movement. 12mo (5.75" by 4.25"), pp. 31, [1], with in-text illustrations. Stereotyped by Alfred Mudge & Son of Boston. In original publisher's red boards stamped in black.
