Description
Paris: Librairie des Amateurs; A. Ferroud, 1891. No. 60 OF 62 COPIES ON JAPON (from a total edition of 525). First Edition in Book Form. 247 x 160 mm. (9 3/4 x 6 1/4"). XVI, 64 pp., [1] leaf; 4 pp. (prospectus). Preface by Anatole France. ELEGANT SCARLET MOROCCO, BEAUTIFULLY GILT, BY PÉTRUS RUBAN (stamp-signed on front turn-in), covers with plain rule and dotted frame with cornerpieces composed of palmettes, acanthus leaves, quiver, bow and arrows, and tiny stars, and side ornaments with scallops and torches with volutes and small tools, raised bands, spine compartments with quiver, bow, and arrows centerpiece, gilt lettering, richly gilt turn-ins with scallop roll, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Printed paper wrappers bound in. Housed in matching morocco-lipped slipcase. With 19 illustrations by Adolphe Lalauze, all in two states, one before letters. A Large Paper Copy. Carteret IV, 301. Spine slightly darkened, joints with very minor wear at head (nicely masked with dye), a couple of trivial finger smudges to the generous margins, but A FINE COPY, clean, fresh, and bright internally, in a scarcely worn, lustrous binding. This is a lovely connoisseur's copy of De Musset's satire on worldly clerics that is printed on smooth paper, features wide margins and charming vignettes, and, best of all, is adorned with a beautiful binding by the highly esteemed Pétrus Ruban. Bibliophile Octave Uzanne praised Ruban (1851-1929) for taking inspiration from everything around him--flowers, birds, architecture--and for his facility with colors. He became quite a fashionable binder, and mostly worked for the great collectors of the day, among them Beraldi, Baudin, Granjon de l'Espinay, and Romagnol. Flety notes that "with a fertile imagination, he practices all genres [of binding] with equal felicity"--a talent that is here directed at evoking the elegant French bindings of the 18th century. Ruban won silver medals at the Palace of Industry and at the Universal Exposition in 1889, with judges at the latter praising his careful study of both historic master binders and modern artists, noting that Ruban would "soon achieve the rank he so rightly seeks." He was named an officer of the academy in 1902. First published in "Revue des Deux Mondes" in 1840, this present novella follows the fortunes of a young man who pretends to be an abbé in the glory days of the French ancien régime. Although literally meaning "abbot," the word "abbé" was a term applied to priests, usually young, who were not affiliated with any church or religious order, but acted as free-lance spiritual advisors to the rich and influential. Such men led a life of ease, frequenting salons, visiting country estates, and being showered with gifts by grateful society women. Our hero Cordier "had never opened a breviary," but made a very good life for himself in this role--until the Revolution brought it all crashing to the ground. Alone and impoverished, Cordier is rescued in his final years by a bequest from an actress to whom he had giving spiritual (and carnal) succor. Author Paul de Musset (1804-80) was the elder brother of Romantic writer Alfred de Musset. Though often overshadowed by his more famous brother, Paul wrote several works of his own, including "Lui et Elle," a response to Georges Sand's "Elle et Lui," regarding her tumultuous affair with brother Alfred. Our artist Lalauze (1838-1906) was a major figure in what Ray describes as a revival of etching as an art form in France. This revival was partly stimulated by the founding of an etcher's society, and the renewed interest was carried into book illustration by a number of publishers who specialized in sumptuous editions like the present one..

EUGENE FIELD (1850-1895). Field was an American author best known for his childrens books.MSS. 2pgs. April 12, 1892. N.p. An autograph manuscript signed Eugene Field. Field wrote out and signed his poem A Spring Poem from Bion. The poems title and the capital letters that begin each verse are decorated in light green ink: A Spring Poem from Bion. One asketh: Tell me, Myrson, tell me true: What's the season pleaseth you? Is it summer suits you best, When from harvest toil we rest? Is it autumn with its glory Of all surfeited desires? Is it winter, when with story And with song we hug our fires? Or is spring most fair to you Come, good Myrson, tell me true! Another answereth: What the gods in wisdom send We should question not, my friend; Yet, since you entreat of me, I will answer reverently: Me the summertime displeases, For its sun is scorching hot; Autumn brings such dire diseases That perforce I like it not; As for biting winter, oh! How I hate its ice and snow! But, thrice welcome, kindly spring, With the myriad gifts you bring! Not too hot nor yet too cold, Graciously your charms unfold; Oh, your days are like the dreaming Of those nights which love beseems, And your nights have all the seeming Of those days of golden dreams! Heaven smiles down on earth, and then Earth smiles up to heaven again. Eugene Field. Fields manuscript is bound in navy blue leather covers, with gilt detailing and marbled gold end pages. The manuscript is in good very good condition with some dirt, and one corner of the first page has been cut off. The binding is lightly worn.

various: various, 1973. First Edition. 5 volumes in various formats. A Tribute to Jim Lowell (Cleveland: Ghost Press, 1967)—first edition, octavo, stapled wrappers with screenprinted cover, very slightly soiled, near fine, limited to 500 copies; Where is Vietnam?: American Poets Respond (Garden City: Doubleday, 1967)—first edition, near fine mass market paperback with very slight rubbing; New Directions in Prose and Poetry 27 (New York: New Directions, 1973)—first edition, wrappers rubbed with crease along spine, loose first leaf, very good, inscribed twice by Coleman Dowell; Poetry Festival: Commissioned Poems 1962 (San Francisco: Poetry Center, San Francisco State College, 1962)—first edition, stapled die-cut illustrated orange wrappers, quarto, fine; New Directions in Prose and Poetry 25 (New York: New Directions, 1972)—first edition, fine in fine dust jacket. Ferlinghetti was an important member of the collaborative networks that sustained postwar American poetry. A Tribute to Jim Lowell unites underground and establishment voices—Bukowski, Olson, Denise Levertov, Robert Lowell, Selby, and McClure among others—in a memorial that demonstrates the respect commanded across the fractured landscape of 1960s poetry. Where is Vietnam? channels poetic innovation toward anti-war activism, featuring Ferlinghetti alongside Ginsberg, Kunitz, and Lowell in direct response to American military intervention. The Poetry Festival commission pairs him with Brother Antoninus, Thom Gunn, and Muriel Rukeyser in a Bay Area gathering, while the two New Directions anthologies position his work within James Laughlin's ongoing project to define American literary modernism alongside figures like Tennessee Williams, Gary Snyder, and international voices. Ferlinghetti's dual role as poet and publisher through City Lights Books made him central to the dissemination of Beat literature and experimental writing. His own accessible, politically engaged verse challenged academic formalism while his publishing enterprise provided material infrastructure for poets working outside commercial channels. These anthologies document his connections across multiple poetic communities during the three decades when American poetry fragmented into competing schools and aesthetic programs.

Description
1910. Photo album documenting the travels of a young woman and her companions through California, Colorado, and Texas during the 1910s and 1920s, preserving visual evidence of female leisure travel, outdoor recreation, and tourism in the early twentieth-century American West. The album captures a period when increasing mobility, expanding rail and automobile tourism, and changing social expectations allowed middle-class women greater participation in recreational travel and outdoor activity. Particularly notable are photographs depicting women in trousers and climbing attire during excursions in Colorado, including two images of the album's owner dressed in men's clothing, reflecting evolving attitudes toward women's physical independence and informal dress within recreational settings. The photographs provide primary-source documentation of tourism culture, women's social life, regional landscapes, and everyday travel experiences across the American West during the interwar period. Album containing 72 mounted black-and-white and sepia-toned silver gelatin photographs affixed to black album leaves. Photographs range in size from approximately 1 x 4.5 inches to 3.5 x 5.5 inches, with most measuring about 2.5 x 4.5 inches. Early photographs depict the album owner and companions at Exposition Park in Los Angeles and along California beaches, including scenes of young adults posing casually outdoors and a young man in a sailor's uniform among the group. Subsequent photographs document travel through Colorado, featuring views of Garden of the Gods, Pike's Peak, mountain landscapes, rock formations, and hiking excursions. Several images show women climbing among rocky terrain while wearing trousers, jackets, and practical outdoor clothing associated with recreational mountaineering and travel. The Texas portion of the album includes photographs of Mission Espada in San Antonio and additional Spanish colonial architecture in southern Texas, alongside informal portraits of travelers posed before mission buildings and landscaped grounds. Throughout the album, the travelers appear in fashionable clothing characteristic of the 1920s, including dresses, hats, coats, and leisurewear. The final leaves contain images of puppies, livestock, and a contemporary automobile, possibly documenting the owner's return home after her travels. Handwritten notes tucked into the rear of the album list rooms and furnishings associated with a house interior. The album documents the expansion of tourism culture and personal mobility in the American West during the early twentieth century, when scenic travel destinations in California and Colorado became increasingly accessible to middle-class travelers through improved transportation infrastructure and growing interest in outdoor recreation. The inclusion of women participating in hiking and climbing activities while wearing unconventional attire for the period provides additional insight into changing gender norms associated with travel and leisure. String-bound in black cloth boards stamped "Photographs" in gilt on the front cover. Two photographs detached from leaves but present. Otherwise very good condition overall. Well-preserved photographic record of women's travel and recreation in the American West during the early twentieth century.

Description
London: Grant Richards, [1902[ First edition. Original color pictorial boards with cloth spine. A bit of light rubbing to extremities. Oblong quarto. With 24 color-printed engraved plates included in pagination. Toning to endpapers. Lacking rear free endpaper. A very good, clean, and bright copy of an uncommon work. Wonderful England! is a facetious and seemingly satirical exultation of British manners and culture in the Edwardian era, told in verse paired with illustrations. The verse pokes fun at the lively caricatures of model British citizens and officials: for example, a drawing of an older man in a British naval uniform eats with a spoon from jars labeled "treacle" and "golden syrup" accompanies text that reads "The first Sea-Lord performs / A most difficult feat / It is said that he tastes / All the jam for our fleet!" (p. 34).

Description
New York: Tower Publications (A Midwood-Tower Book, F275). Fair. 1963. First Edition. Softcover. [cheaply-produced paperback, such that any amount of stress on the binding will inevitably result in a cracked binding and loose pages, as with this copy; it looks fairly nice externally, but has a couple of loose (detached) pages]. Mass Market PB (B&W photographs) The screenplay for Wilder & Diamond's 1963 romantic comedy about a happy-go-lucky Parisian prostitute and the gendarme who loves her, starring Shirley MacLaine and Jack Lemmon. It was a non-musical version of the 1956 French musical play of the same name, an enormous success which had a four-year run in Paris; the Broadway version, which opened in 1960, garnered a bunch of Tony nominations. .
