Description
Philadelphia: J. & A.Y. Humphreys, 1811. FIRST EDITION. Contemporary boards, rebacked, uncut; foxing and spotting throughout. First edition. Currie (1745-1828) was a highly esteemed physician and one of the founders of the Philadelphia College of Physicians. He here treats a number of diseases, from yellow fever, dropsy, pneumonia, gastritis, influenza and consumption to dysentery, cholera and hepatitis, among others. Each of these ailments, which he considers the most prevalent in America, are detailed with causes, symptoms and treatment in simple and straight-forward language. Currie served in the Revolutionary War; he was commissioned Surgeon in Colonel Atlee's Musketry battalion in the spring of 1776 and served at the Battle of Long Island. He actively served the Philadelphia community during the 1793 Yellow Fever epidemic there but engaged in a very public debate with Benjamin Rush about the best way to contain the disease (Rush believed the disease to be of domestic origin and that the use of mercurials and bleeding was the most efficacious remedy, while Currie thought the disease to be imported and was averse to bleeding). The debate apparently resulted in a general distrust of medical practitioners throughout the community which possibly lead to a higher mortality rare. Description
London: John Murray, 1838 Book. Fine. Hardcover. 2 volumes. First edition. Pp. xxvii, [1], 359 + x, [2], 342. Engraved frontis portrait, engraved frontis plate, hand-colored folding map. Newly bound in three-quarter maroon leatherette over boards, gilt-lettered spine. A fine and generally clean set. This work is based on a number of years' residence and travel in the regions drained by the 'Paraguay' and the 'Rio de la Plata'. The work contains some striking descriptions of the state of the country and of the curious events that were taking place. The 'Letters...' were popular in their day, and left a strong impression upon popular opinion (extracted from Larned). A second edition was published a year later which contained a third volume titled, "Francia's Reign of Terror." The hand-colored folding map is titled, "The Republic of Paraguay and the Adjacent Countries with the Courses of the Rivers Paraguay, Parana, & La Plata." The authors were merchants of long experience in the Plata; their 'letters' are a standard source for Francia's regime.[Larned: 4087; Sabin: 71963]..
