Description
16/09/1850. Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. was a physician, poet, author and lecturer. But he could not always accommodate those who invited him to speak.Autograph Letter Signed, 2 pages, Pittsfield, Massachusetts, September 16, 1850, to someone apparently in Troy, New York, who wanted him to lecture there. “If persuasive eloquence and persevering entreaty could move me from the course which I am obliged to lay down for myself, Mr. Brooks would have sent me to Troy had Troy been remote as ancient Ilium. It is a determination however with me not to accept invitations from a distance during the lecturing season, and it is rarely convenient for me to do so at any other. In the cold season I usually get a severe cold or a lumbago or something of the kind if I attempt to travel, and as I lecture almost daily I am very shy of such encumbrances. In the warm season I am in the country with my family which I am unwilling to leave alone for any considerable excursions. The exceptions I have made have been rare and prompted only by peculiar and urgent reasons. I thank you and any unknown friends I might have in Troy for the kind and flattering invitation they have extended to me. It would give me great pleasure to see your city and to do what I could to please those who are willing to believe I have the power of pleasing them. I do not, I must own, feel able to promise it, and I trust it will not cost anybody half the trouble to hear my apologies that it does me to be obliged to make them.” Holmes spent his summers on property his mother owned in Pittsfield in the cooler Berkshire Mountains and as Troy, New York is less than 50 miles from Pittsfield it shows how determined Holmes was not to, as he says, move from his course. The Brooks he mentions may be Rev. Charles Brooks, then affiliated with Harvard.Although Holmes had published several famous poems such as Old Ironsides and The Last Leaf by the time of this letter he was first and foremost a physician and lecturer on medical themes at this stage of his life. In 1847, Holmes was hired as Parkman Professor of Anatomy and Physiology at Harvard Medical School, where he served as dean until 1853 and taught until 1882. His famous book of essays The Autocrat of the Breakfast Table and his best novel, Elsie Venner, were written in the late 1850’s and he began once again to turn his hand mainly to poetry, The Deacon’s Masterpiece or The One Hoss Shay being perhaps the most famous.

Description
Oxford: Henry Daniel, 1899. First thus. Near Fine. Limited to 150 copies, this number 36. Printed in black letter. Finely bound by Zaehnsdorf in a modernist style, likely for exhibition (with their circlular stamp on the rear silk paste-down). Bound in full dark brown crushed morocco. Interwoven rules create a central panel on the front and rear boards, similar, but smaller patterns in the spine panels. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed, ruled inner dentelles, dark brown silk end papers. Spine a bit toned and few bookseller notations to the verso of the front end paper. Clean and fresh throughout. Quarto (leaves 228 x 172), collating: [iv], 64,[x], complete. Feeling that current church music has become to worldly, the late-Victorian poet Robert Bridges was driven to create music that reached for something beyond the realm of man. To achieve his revivalist goals, Bridges collaborated on the project with musical scholar H. Ellis Wooldridge and his wife, the pianist Monica Bridges to write news hymns for their parish church in Yattendon. Even the printing of the hymns reflected 16th century book production and typography transporting the reader to another time and place. The Austro-Hungarian -born, Joseph Zaehnsdorf (1816-1886) trained with binders in Stuttgart and in Vienna, before moving to Germany, Switzerland, France, and eventually settling London. He working for various shops before opening his own bindery in 1842. In the face of industrializing production Zaehnsdorf embraced craft and eventually gained recognition for his talent. He was known for his precise finish and elegant design. The firm would continue in his son John William's capable hands; it employed binders like Louis Genth, Roger de Coverly, and Sarah Prideaux. Family run until 1947, it was eventually acquired by Asprey of London in 1983 (Gertz). Near Fine.

Engraved allegorical frontis (slightly cropped at outer margin). 3 p.l. (incl. frontis.), 199 pp. 8vo, attractive blue morocco-backed boards, spine lettered in gilt. London: Printed by J. Tonson & J. Watts, 1725/26. The English issue of the sale catalogue of the library of John Bridges (1666-1724), historian of Northamptonshire. Bridges left his fine library to his two brothers, who prepared an inventory catalogue in 1725 for sale. Their efforts were apparently fruitless as the books were sent to auction before the year was out. There are two issues of the present auction catalogue: the English issue with the title in English and a frontispiece, and a second issue with two title-pages, one in Latin and another in French. The continental issue was prepared in order to attract bids from dealers and collectors from Europe. It is generally not recognized that attempts were made by English auctioneers in the early 18th century to generate business from the Continent. Dibdin called Bridges “a notorious book-collector.” The library contained over 4000 books and MSS. It was notably rich in the history and antiquities of Great Britain and Ireland. There was a scandal surrounding the sale as Bridges’s two brothers were quite obviously bidding up the books. Humphrey Wanley, who was a buyer at the sale for Robert Harley’s library, described the sale as “very knavish.” A very good and crisp copy. ❧ D.N.B., II, pp. 1229-30–“the catalogue of his library was long retained as valuable by curious collectors.” Fletcher, English Book Collectors, pp. 156-58. See Pollard & Ehrman, p. 212, Table XXV, & no. 222 for the inventory catalogue of earlier in the same year. Taylor, Book Catalogues, pp. 193 & 206.

Description
[Portugal: self-published], 1962. Square sheet of text to recto and verso, measuring 20 × 20 cm, with eight increasingly narrow leaves or strips of text on top, on green and white stock of light green and white. About very good. Concrete poetry artist's book composed of one square sheet of text to recto and verso, with eight increasingly narrow leaves, with alternating hues of light green and white. As one leaves, the strips, they grow wider and text is arranged in dynamic layouts, producing a striking visual effect. The artist was the engineer, poet, essayist, writer and sculptor E. M. de Melo e Castro (1932-2020), who was instrumental in the development of experimental poetry in Portugal. His artistic practice was "accompanied by a systematic theorization about language and communication technologies. In his extensive work, multiple practices and experimental forms intersect: the graphic and graphic explosion that combines the fragmentation of the word with the spatialization of alphabetic writing and geometric design; the three-dimensional object-poem and the installation; the intermediate recombination of writing, sound and moving image; the performance that inscribes the author's bodily, vocal and gestural presence in social practices and communication techniques; the theorization of the poem as a device for discourse criticism in the saturated universe of the media" (Manuel Portela, "E. M. de Melo e Castro [Biografia)." As of July 2022, KVK, OCLC only show a copy in Portugal. The object is also held by the Gulbenkian Art Library.

Douglas with tissue guard; 8 inserted b&w plates; a few unopened leaves; light shelf scuffing to edges; paper lightly age-toned; both volumes near fine. Lacking their dust jackets. The author, Albert Jeremiah Beveridge (1862-1927), was an attorney, a Freemason, and a U.S. Senator from Indiana. He was elected to the Senate as a Republican in 1899 and served until 1911. He was an important leader in the Progressive Era, spanning from the 1890s to the start of WWI, and supported Theodore Roosevelt in his presidency. In his retirement, he penned a Pulitzer prize-winning four-volume biography of Chief Justice John Marshall. The biography of Abraham Lincoln was cut short by his death with only two volumes complete, hence the ending date of 1858. Considered to be an honest look at Lincoln the man, the work was published posthumously. After his death, Beveridge's wife handed over his notes and research to Carl Sandberg, and two more volumes were published, bringing the work up to four volumes.
