Description
12/02/1836. The man was a Wall Street banker who became president of the North American Trust and Banking Company.Started by Joseph D. Beers after he came to New York in 1815, J.D. Beers &_Co. was a Wall Street banking and brokerage firm with offices on Wall Street. Beers formally retired from the firm in 1835, but stayed active until his death twenty-eight years later, principally concerning himself with land speculation and stock investments. Shortly after his retirement, Beers planned a trip to England to consider investments there.""Mr. Beers is a gentleman of the highest respectability and is very favorably known in the commercial and banking affairs of his country as a capitalist whose extensive means have been safely and usefully employed.""Somewhat anomalously, banker Beers was a staunch friend of populist President Jackson. For his trip, Jackson provided him with an introduction to the U.S. Ambassador to Great Britain, Aaron Vail. Letter Signed as President, Washington, February 12, 1836, to Vail. “Allow me to present to your acquaintance J.D. Beers Esq. of the city of New York who is about to visit Europe. Mr. Beers is a gentleman of the highest respectability and is very favorably known in the commercial and banking affairs of his country as a capitalist whose extensive means have been safely and usefully employed. I solicit for him your kind attentions and have the honor to remain...Andrew Jackson.” After returning to the United States, Beers became president of the North American Trust and Banking Company. This may be the earliest use of the term “capitalist” by a president, at least in its modern sense, and if it is not, it must be close to it. Extensive research has failed to disclose any other prior use. It is of the greatest interest that Jackson, renowned as foe of the privileged and powerful,  was not opposed to banking tycoons gathering “extensive means.”

Description
New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1922. First Edition. Original Cloth. Very Good. RARE SIGNED FIRST EDITION OF WALTER LIPPMANN'S PRESCIENT TEXT EXAMINING THE INTERPLAY BETWEEN MEDIA, PUBLIC OPINION, AND DEMOCRACY. Signed and inscribed by Lippmann: "To E.W. Osborn / from his cell mate [?] / Walt Lippmann / March 1922." Everything old is new again. "For when there's panic in the air, with one crisis tripping over the heels of another, actual dangers mixed with imaginary scares, there is no chance at all for the constructive use of reasons, and any order soon seems preferable to any disorder." These words, written by Walter Lippmann in 1922 in Public Opinion, are as true today as they were over 100 years ago. Walter Lippmann (1889-1974), the father of modern journalism, won a Pulitzer Prize in 1958 and 1962, and a Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Johnson in 1964. He was also one of the the founding editors of the New Republic and the author of The New York Herald Tribune's nationally syndicated column "Today and Tomorrow" from 1931 to 1967 in which he shared his insights and analysis on domestic and international affairs. Lippmann was a political philosopher and President Wilson drew upon his ideas for, among other things, the post-World War I settlement plan (Fourteen Points). Lippmann was a confidante of every president from Teddy Roosevelt to Richard Nixon and a significant voice in global geopolitics. In April 1961 Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev, dealing with a crisis in Berlin, asked Lippmann to delay a planned interview in Russia. When Lippmann said no, Khrushchev rearranged his plans to accommodate an interview with Lippmann (Harsch). The articles that resulted won Lippmann his second Pulitzer Prize. We have his preeminent text Public Opinion on offer. This work, about the media's role in shaping public opinion, is widely considered to be "the founding book of modern journalism" (Carey, 20). In this text, Lippmann exposed how the media shapes public perception and how that perception impacts society. His incisive analysis is increasingly relevant 100 years later and his work continues to be cited and built upon by those seeking to understand the complexities of modern public life.Lippmann was an intellectual and believed that journalism was vitally important as both a profession and an instrument of democracy. Public Opinion was prescient and foundational in media studies. In this text he coined the modern psychological meaning of the term "stereotype," which he defined as "cognitive shortcuts" used to navigate the complexities of the world. He also introduced the concept of "manufacture of consent," arguing that the media could shape public perception through framing and selective presentation of facts. Though this idea is commonly understood in today's media environment where commercialization and partisanship often upstage journalistic integrity, it was novel 100 years ago. He called this subjective, simplified version of reality the "pseudo-environment." Lippmann worried that these "pictures in our heads" led to opinions based on distorted or incomplete information, resulting in polarization and misinformation. In Public Opinion Lippmann shared his concerns about the fate of democracy, believing that society's complexity made it difficult for average citizens to fully understand and engage with public issues. He also shared his suspicion that some news stories were dominated by the emotions and hopes of the journalist rather than by the facts. To address these concerns, he advocated for expert analysis and interpretation to guide public opinion as well as elevated journalistic standards and professionalism. His analyses in this book provide context and lessons for political discourse and policy-making. While his ideas were ground-breaking and controversial in 1922, Lippmann's concerns about the media are indisputable. The modern media market is more competitive, more fragmented, and more profit-driven than that of Lippmann's day. As a life-long journalist Lippmann made many friends in the industry. While working at The New York World in the early 1920s, he met E. William Osborn, a drama critic and long-time editor. This copy that we have on offer is inscribed to Osborn, a member of the editorial staff of The New York World for 42 years. It's been 50 years since Walter Lippmann died, yet journalists today continue to grapple with many of the questions that defined Lippmann's life and career: How should news be created? What is the role of the media in shaping public opinion? How does one balance reporting and commentary? How do stereotypes affect public perception? What are the limitations of individual understanding in a complex world?New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1922. Octavo, original cloth with paper spine label; custom box. Without the exceedingly rare dust jacket (we've never seen an example of the jacket). Some wear to cloth, with fraying at bottom corner of front panel, mild rubbing to spine label. A few early notations in text (underlinings and marginal lines), likely by Osborn. Notably, without any library stamps (a common problem with this book). A very good copy, exceptionally rare signed. Description
Geneva, 1822. Boissier, Henri (1762-1845). Autograph letter signed to André Melly (1802-51). Geneva, 21 March 1822. 2pp. plus integral address leaf. 202 x 155 mm. Docketed. From Professor Henri Boissier, founder of Geneva's natural history museum, to the young Swiss businessman André Melly, acting as the museum's purchasing agent in England, regarding the purchase of insect specimens for the museum. Boissier informs Melly that the museum's collections have recently been augmented "par un don de coléopteres de M. le Dr. Peschier où il y a de bonnes choses, & par un achast de quelques bons papillons & insectes exotiques que m'a procuré M. Prévost" [by a gift of coleoptera from Dr. Peschier containing some good things, and by a purchase of several good butterflies and foreign insects from M. Prévost].This last purchase "a un peu réduit la somme que la cours avait mit à ma disposition. Je ne peut donc vous faire payer pour le moment qu'un bon de f. 400 que je vous prie d'employer, comme vous le jugerai convenable, surtout en orthoptères, hémiptères & névroptères dont nous sommes très mal fournis" [has reduced somewhat the amount made available to me from the course. At this moment I can only pay you the sum of 400 francs which I urge you to use, as you see fit, primarily for orthoptera, hemiptera and neuroptera, which we greatly lack]. Boissier lists several species of each that he wishes to acquire, including "criquets & sauter[elles] exotiq[ues]" [foreign crickets and grasshoppers] and "termites ou fourmis blanches" [termites or white ants]. He instructs Melly to expedite the shipment of insects to him so that he will have enough time to unpack them and put them in cases. "Dr. Peschier" may refer to Geneva native Charles Gaspard Peschier (1782-1853), a pioneer of homeopathic medicine in French-speaking countries. M. Prévost, another Genevan, was a founder of the firm of Prévost and Morris in London. Boissier's correspondent, André Melly, ended up settling in England in 1822 (the year that this letter was written), and becoming a prominent businessman in northern England. He acted as agent to the Viceroy of India and then to the Egyptian Government, dying of fever while on a tour of the Nile in 1851. .

Wigglesworth, Jr. M.D. 24 Charles St. "My dear Bungay, I believe you have my romantic life and thrilling adventures down to where I left my country for my country's good. I staid 5 years in Europe studying skin diseases, came home Sept. 1870, settled as above, am practicing Dermatology as my Specialty, was appointed a few days since lecturer on Syphilis at the Hav. Med. School, am one of the orators for this year before the annual meeting of the Man. Med. Soc. And am delighted to know that you are enjoying the same blessing … Otherwise I've done, been & suffered nothing. Decidedly concur in the idea of a demi-decennial report. "The class" don't "seem to take no interest". I'm for the dinner for I should like to see just once the "old familiar faces" tho' I suppose that's past hoping for now. As to the Class Fund, I as "the most popular man in the class" shd. Want to do at least as much as any man, but seeing that only 13 men of wh. Unlucky number I was one, have subscribed and that deducting my subscrip. [wh. Was scrip for $ 50. If I remember rightly] there remains for the other 12 an average of less than $ 15.00 it hardly seems worth while to try to fight it out on that line. If the "jolly class of '61" should change its mind, regalvanize its effete affections and do the handsome thing, … your friend Ned W." 108 Boylston St. Boston, July 3/77 "Dear Wright, Thanks for news of chart! Yours just rec'd Since 1871 I have pottered along doing my little multa rather than multum. I have however founded and presented to the Harvard Medical School the finest museum in America of Specimens of skin diseases. I am Instructor in Syphilis at the School; one of the collaborators of the Amer. Archives of Dermatology; corresponding Member of the New York Dermatological Society; and one of the Translators of Ziemssen's Cyclopedia of Universal Medicine. I founded and ran for five years the Boston Dispensary for Skin Diseases and the raison d'etre of such an institution being proved the city has now inaugurated that department in its general Dispensary. I gave the initial impetus to the Boston Med. Register and to the Boston Med. Library Association and was chairman of the meeting at Philadelphia Sept. 6th 1876 to organize the Amer. Dermatological Association. I am a member of the Amer. Med. Assoc. (on Special Committee); Amer. Public Health Assoc.; Amer. Social Science Assoc. (chairman of Health Department); Amer. Metric Bureau (financial and medical committees); Mass. Med. Soc. (committee on scientific papers); Boston Society of Medical Sciences (ex-secretary); Boston Society for Medical Observation (ex-secretary); Boston Soc. Of Nat. Hist.; Boston Med. Library Assoc. (exec. Com.) ' etc. I have published a couple of dozen papers upon skin diseases in the Dermatological and other Journals, originals, translations, reviews, digests, abstracts, &c. I have become a "Liberal" in Religious matters and am interested in the success of "The Index" of Boston, of which F.E. Abbott is the Editor. My office is at 108 Boylston St Boston my house at 81 Beacon St ditto. I practice skin diseases exclusively, am still unmarried , have no children and in general "am just as young as I used to be". Trusting all our classmates may send you as egotistical missives as this one … Edward Wigglesworth" 108 Boylston St. July 7 (no year) "Dear Wright, Sorry not to see you Decoration Day and Commencement. Pettee did very well for us however & deserves the thanks of all. I think the class grows together more as it shrinks, which perhaps is natural. I have done lecturing until next year but my work continues and this is the time also for writing Journal Articles. By the way we are going to get out a skin journal in N.Y. Archives of Dermatology & Syphilis & I have been appointed collaborator, my department being Hypertrophies Atrophies and new formations of the skin. Also I am one of the translators of Ziemssenn's Encyclopedia of Medicine an immense work embracing all medicine & bringing it down to the present day, by the best men in the whole German Empire. David Lincoln has just published a valuable little work on Electro-therapeutics being his prize essay. I wrote to-day to Hiram who has a nice place in Wales St. off Blue Hill Avenue he has knocked off drink & is doing well, though not quite as strong as he once was. Now Wright I am interested in a paper here called the Index & should be glad to send it to you for a year free gratis. I do not care to convert anyone. All are but parts of one stupendous whole & the whole & its parts are all right … But I think it would interest you & show you one side & I hold that we should all see & study all sides… Edw. Wigglesworth" Jackson New Hampshire, 3/7/95 "Dear Bungay, (How the heart warms as it draws more closely to its rapidly shrinking memories) Is it possible to purchase a copy of the '61 Report of the lives of the members? If so where? I need an additional copy to keep up here in Jackson N.H. where I am trying to establish a summer home with a soil of compost & grass seed equal parts, heaped upon the granite soil of the granite state. … Natheless, it is not so far from Montpelier! Can you not run down for a week & swap yr. society for board, lodging & gratitude? … We've got a hill, lots of green apples & a hornets nest & everything to make you comfortable… Did you see the account in the Bost. Daily advertiser of yesterday of " '61 the banner class of Harvard with 47 in the war just over a majority."? It said we sent more than any other class to the war. I did not know that to be the fact. Then if we sent 47 & graduated 78 it seems to me that is much more than a bare majority. The banner class shd. Be the one sending most soldiers in proportion to its numbers, it seems to me. I see Dr. Gould, the astronomer, of Cambridge has been run over & his nose fractured. … E. Wigglesworth" East Boston, February 14, 1896 "Dear Wright, I send you a copy of some verses that I have written in honor of Wigglesworth. Wigglesworth was, practically, our real class-supper chorister; and it was in view of the many fine things he did for us, that I felt it my duty to commemorate him in the way in which I have. … John P.
