Description
1611. HOOKER, Richard. Of the Lawes of Ecclesiastical Politie. Eight Bookes [Books I-V]. London: Printed by William Stansby (to be sold by Matthew Lownes), 1611. Small folio (8 by 11-1/2 inches), contemporary full limp vellum, manuscript title to spine, yapp edges. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $5500.Second collected edition of ""the earliest statement of the original contract as the basis of government… [and] the first statement of the principles behind the English Constitution,"" Richard Hooker’s significant theological and philosophical articulation of the concept of law, eventually an important influence on the United States Constitution, with the engraved general title and the separate letterpress title page for Book V dated 1611, in contemporary vellum.Philosopher Richard Hooker, Master of the Temple Church in London, was, with Thomas Cranmer and Matthew Parker, one of the most formative of Anglican theological intellects. He shared the Temple pulpit with Calvinist divine (and his relation by marriage) Walter Travers. Travers challenged the orthodoxy of Hooker's sermons, especially Hooker's acceptance of the Church of Rome as a branch of ""the true church of Christ,"" and his belief that God in mercy saved thousands of church fathers who lived prior to the Reformation. ""Hooker's reply to these objections lays the groundwork of the philosophical and theological system expounded later in"" the present work (Pyle I:447). ""In the course of its eight books, the Laws deals with issues between conformists and nonconformists, Episcopalians and Presbyterians, and Rome and the Church of England in greater depth than any previous treatment"" (DNB). Its impact would, however, ultimately be felt far beyond doctrinal controversies.Hooker intended this ""monumental work… as a defense of the Church of England as established in the reign of Elizabeth I, and more particularly as a defense of Episcopacy and the government of the Church against the objections of the Presbyterians. In fact he proceeded to consider the ultimate principles in which all authority rests, which he finds in the concept of law 'whose seat is the bosom of God, whose voice the harmony of the world.' Law, operating in nature, controlling the character and actions of individual men and visible in the formation of societies and governments, is equally to be seen as part of the divine order according to which God himself acts… Applying his principles to man in society, [Hooker] derives the force of government from the general approbation… 'To be commanded we do consent, when that society whereof we are part hath at any time before consented, without revoking the same after, by the like universal agreement.' This is the earliest statement of the original contract as the basis of government, which had originated in France and was to become a major issue in the political struggles of the 17th century. Hooker's theory formed the basis of Locke's Treatise of Civil Government and can thus be considered the first statement of the principles behind the Constitution of England"" (PMM 104). The book's considerable influence extends as well, both directly and indirectly through Locke's Two Treatises, to the foundation of American constitutionalism. ""Madison and the other framers made frequent reference to Calvin, Richard Hooker and the New England divines in their political writings, and were vitally aware of the long history of compacts in America. Through them, the principles of covenants and compacts became a part of the Federal Constitution"" (Lutz & Warren, A Covenanted People: The Religious Tradition and the Origins of American Constitutionalism, 64). ""An American political philosopher proclaimed [Hooker's] importance as a pioneer of enlightenment: 'If there is any single point that must be chosen as the beginning of the English Enlightenment, as the first glimmering of its dawn, then that would have to be the publication in 1593 of the first four books of Richard Hooker's Of the Lawes of Ecclesiastical Politie"" (DNB). Hooker originally planned this work in eight books, as indicated on the title page; however, before his death in 1600, he published only five (the preface and the first four appearing in 1593, the fifth in 1597). Books six and eight were published in 1648; book seven, in 1661. Besides the first edition of the first four books of the Laws in 1593 and book 5 in 1597, there were several early 17th-century editions of the first five books together, Spenser's in 1604, followed by this one printed by William Stansby, which includes the first appearance of the title page engraved by William Hole, which recurs, with altered imprint, in all London editions, until 1723. General title page undated; part title to Book Five dated 1611. STC 13714. ESTC S119096. Early owner ink signatures to upper margin of title page; later owner pencil signature to front flyleaf. Occasional penciled marginalia.Expert paper repairs to upper corner of title page, just touching border, and first two leaves of text; paper repair to last text leaf, not affecting letterpress. Mild toning to text, rera inner hinge just starting but holding strong. Expert restoration and light soiling to contemporary vellum. Very good.

Description
Unique., ca1780. Contemporary half leather over paper covered boards. The paper exhibiting a delicate floral design.. Very good; some cover wear.. Small 4to, 114 pp. appx. 195 x 160 mm. Written in German gothic script on laid paper (no watermark). Although this volume bears the signature of a John Shank and several lines in English establishing his ownership on January 29, 1836, it dates from about 50 years before. It is continental in origin with no record of how Shank came to own it. The opening pages provide recipes for various color inks (including the green used to record one other recipe later in the manuscript). It then moves on to colors. coloring metals, writing on various surfaces, the brazing of non-ferrous metals, etching, etc. At one point the writer addresses the dyeing of vellum and paper and the use of Lapis lazuli - both exotic topics not encountered in American manuscripts. There are occasional miscellaneous recipes recorded, e.g., Dutch gin. The manuscript exhibits little wear or staining and one assumes Shank could not read the exotic text and had it as a keepsake.

NIMROD (pseud. of Charles J. Apperley). The Life of a Sportsman. By Nimrod. With Thirty-Six Coloured Illustrations by Henry Alken. London: Rudolph Ackermann, Eclipse Sporting Gallery, 1842. First edition, first issue with four plates on India paper mounted on plate paper, and plate at p. 348 in first state. Octavo (9 1/4 x 6 inches; 235 x 152 mm). vi, [2, contents], 402, pp. Thirty-four hand-colored aquatint plates. Extra engraved aquatint title page, vignettes and portrait. Bound ca. 1900 by Zaehsndorf - stamp-signed in gilt on front turn-in. Full dark blue crushed levant morocco, covers triple-ruled in gilt surrounding a blind-tooled rule. Spine with five raised bands decoratively ruled and lettered in gilt in compartments, double-ruled board edges, wide elaborate gilt turn-ins, cream watered silk liners and endleaves, all edges gilt. Spine very slightly faded, small chip on headband, otherwise near fine. "When Lockhart said of 'Nimrod' that he could 'hunt like Hugo Meynell and write like Walter Scott,' he was doubtless excited into exaggeration by the pleasure of having hit upon a man who could write of sport without the vulgarity of Egan...The Life of a Sportsman, published in 1842, contains a very pleasant account of country life in days when sport was no longer confused with debauchery; while its descriptions of runs to hounds, its lore of hunting and of four-in-hand driving, and its variety of incident and anecdote make it still both valuable and agreeable. Apperley, though not a Walter Scott, was a good writer; he knew his subject thoroughly, on both the scientific and the personal sides, and this work of fiction, though poor in plot, is rich in interest" (Cambridge History of English and American Literature, Volume XIV. The Victorian Age, Part Two. Ch. 15, Nimrod). Charles J. Apperley (1778-1843) "began writing for the Sporting Magazine. From his boyhood his ruling passions had been hunting, horse-riding, and horse management...Apperley's expert knowledge and social status made him an invaluable recruit to the sporting press of the time, and he may even be said to have created the role of gentleman hunting correspondent. Writing at first under various pseudonyms (Acastus, Eques, and A), he published his first article for the Sporting Magazine as Nimrod in January 1822 and he subsequently usually used that nom de plume. For five seasons, from 1824 to 1828, he was the magazine's official representative...Many of his articles were in serial form and were subsequently published as books, notably his Memoirs of the Life of John Mytton (1837) and The Life of a Sportsman (1842)... his ability and authority were unquestioned. He earned the respect of sportsmen everywhere not only for his skillful and fearless riding but also for the knowledge and judgment he displayed in his writings and for his unrivaled experience of the hunting world. As Nimrod he held a unique position in his day and left an imperishable memory in sporting history" (Oxford DNB). Podeschi 167. Siltzer, p. 73. Schwerdt I, p. 36. Tooley, 65.

Rockport, Maine: Down East Books, 2000. Ephemera no binding. Fine. Kelly Paul BRIGGS. SIGNED by the ARTIST. Original art: 15 ½" x 15 ½" mat size; 5 5/8" x 5 5/8" image size. Original illustration art from Lighthouse Lullaby by mid-coast Maine author and artist Kelly Briggs. The second illustration found in the book on page 6 pictures a mother baking and gazing out the window at her husband and son. "Island home built snug and true / Where the stone hearth's fire glows. / Mama bakes while Papa leaves / To bring the flock in from the snow.". The work is done in the pointillist technique using tiny dots of color to define the space and create an image. This technique was first described by Georges Seurat and Paul Signac in 1886 as part of the Neo-Impressionist movement. This painting along with several others was in an exhibition at the Farnsworth Museum, Rockland, Maine. A charming story of a lighthouse keeper and his family living on a remote Maine island. The author explains, "Island living was not easy, but they took pleasure in simple things that we now sometimes take for granted-a warm bed, a roof over our heads, and someone to love us." Ms. Briggs is a mostly self-taught artist, born and living on the coast of Maine. She is part of the Farnsworth Museum's Arts in Education Teaching Artist in Rockland, Maine. PLEASE NOTE: This does not include a copy of the book, Lighthouse Lullaby.

New York: Harrison Smith & Robert Haas, 1932. First edition. Hardcover. Good. Octavo [24 cm] Full rust colored cloth with paper labels on the front board and the backstrip, and the publisher's black top stain. Boards a little warped; 4" split in cloth along the rear joint; front hinge broken. The author/illustrator's third wordless novel explores the social and economic realities of the Great Depression. Preceded by the artist's groundbreaking first two novels: Gods' Man (1929) and Madman's Drum (1930). In this work Ward used a two color system, rust colored for the thoughts of the protagonist, and black for the crumbling world around him. Ward produced six wordless novels between 1929 and 1937, and although Ward continued to be an illustrator in high demand for the rest of his life, these early works find him at the absolute height of his creative and artistic powers.

(no dust jacket) [ex-lending library book (label and various stamps on front pastedown), heavily worn (especially at bottom corners), hinges tender although not cracked; should be considered a READING COPY only]. Dark suspense yarn set in Havana. Filmed, somewhat, as a B-noir (THE CHASE) in 1946, with uninspired direction (by Arthur Ripley) and Bob Cummings (who was no Bob Mitchum) in the lead. Too bad this copy isn't prettier, but I can't help that. If you're so inclined, you could dress it up with a facsimile dust jacket, and as long as it stayed on the shelf nobody would be the wiser. .
