Description
1937. First Edition. Signed. (ROOSEVELT, Franklin D.) [WATSON, Edwin]. Log of the Cruise of President Franklin D Roosevelt in the Gulf of Mexico. (Washington): [The White House], 1937. Quarto, original half cloth, original buff paper wrappers. Housed in a custom cloth clamshell box . $6000.Limited first edition, one of an unnumbered limited, of this privately printed travel logbook about FDR's cruise in the Gulf of Mexico, inscribed on the title page: ""For Paul Hart from Franklin D. Roosevelt.""According to Roosevelt bibliographer Ernest J. Halter, at least 17 of these presidential cruise logs were issued between 1934 and 1945. Because they were all planographed or mimeographed to maintain their homemade appearance, their production didn't require a formal publisher and thus the exact number remains unknown. All, however, were issued in restricted editions for private distribution. The present log concerns FDR's Gulf of Mexico cruise on the U.S.S. Potomac. It also includes details of a condolence letter sent from Roosevelt to Hitler about the Hindenburg. It is believed to have been written entirely by Colonel Edwin M. Watson, Roosevelt's close friend and favorite advisor. Indeed, their friendship was even stronger than their professional association. During his administration, Roosevelt adopted Watson's Virginia estate as his Camp David-esque presidential retreat. Watson was also essentially the White House Chief of Staff at a time when the position had not yet been formally created. Notably, when Roosevelt wanted to stand at public appearances, Watson was one of only two people (the other being Roosevelt's son) that Roosevelt trusted enough to use for physical support. Watson served Roosevelt faithfully, until his tragic death from a hemorrhagic stroke while returning from the Yalta Conference. These pre-war logbooks are quite rare; we know of only two examples appearing for public sale. Halter, 191. From the private estate of Paul M. Hart of Missouri City, Texas.Fine condition.

Description
[Havana, 1818. Good.. Broadside, 11.75 x 8 inches. Heavily tanned. An apparently unrecorded Havana imprint, comprising a broadside authorization for increased funding to be extended to the superintendent of Havana so that he can maximize the potential of the island's tobacco plantations. This credit is matched by the superintendent’s promise to use the money, "con el preciso destino de comprar y remitir á España las mayores cantidades posibles de este género." The superintendent must also swear to be vigilant and honest in his account-taking reports to Spain, and, "Avise con toda la anticipacion posible los acopios y compras que verifique à proporcion que tenga de hacerlos y probabilidad en las remesas con seguridad, aprovechándo todas las ocasiones que se le presenten para remitir cigarros y hoja de buena calidad á la Peninsula aunque sea con bandera extrangera." Signed in print and rubricated in manuscript by Pedro Carambot, a Cuban official of the late 1810s. Not in OCLC.

Description
London: Edmund Evans, 1881. First edition. Quarto (9 9/16 x 8 1/4 in; 243 x 208 mm). 29, [1, printer's slug] pp. Color-printed wood-engraved text illustrations, most accompanied with musical notations. Publisher's light green glazed pictorial boards, beveled edges with green cloth backstrip, light green coated endpapers, all edges stained green. Thomson variant 31a with border of six narrow brown rules alternating with five yellow rules; inside border at each corner containing a yellow sunflower. In the publisher's printed dust jacket with some acid-free tape strengthening on the verso and a small (1 1/4 inch) piece chipped away from top of spine and one small chip (5/8 x 1/2 inch) on front panel not affecting text or image. Housed in a black cloth clamshell case, spine lettered in gilt. A very good copy. "Victorian-era children's book artist and author Kate Greenaway (1846-1901) began her career during the early 1870s illustrating greeting cards," (NYPL) but she soon turned her successful brush towards book illustration. "Like fellow illustrators Walter Crane and Randolph Caldecott, Greenaway sought to publish innovative children's works of the highest quality. Her focus on depictions of children, however, set her illustrations apart from those of her contemporaries. Greenaway's work is cherished today for its unaffected, pastoral imagery" (NYPL). Her romantic conception of childhood was based in part on her own experiences. Famous critic John Ruskin was known to be a huge admirer of her art. "...By Christmas, Ruskin had recovered and was ready to advise her. Although he was still depressed by his uncontrollable health...his depression was somewhat relieved by Kate's latest books...A Day in a Child's Life was even more evocative, with its rose wreath half-title page; a blonde girl lying in bed, so reminiscent of a child Rose on her sick bed; and young girls in white frocks dancing over a hillside to 'A Romp' - so like his Winnington Hall frolics" (Engen). Schuster & Engen 66; Thomson 31d; Engen, Kate Greenaway. A Biography.

Very good plus.
Description
Du Bois, Pa, 1933. Very good plus.. Panoramic photograph, 8 x 34.5 inches. Rolled. Minor edge wear, light foxing. Good contrast, minimal fading. A rare photographic record of a segregated African-American CCC company in Benezette, Pennsylvania in September 1933, just a few months after this New Deal program was created. African-American recruits made up only about seven percent of total enrollment in the Civilian Conservation Corps, and their camps were kept strictly segregated, except for the commanding officers, as seen here. Company 303 was among the original six segregated CCC companies established in May 1933; the company spent most of its existence at Camp S204 in Benezette, in the northwest quadrant of the state. Their primary duties involved woodlands management, specifically building and maintaining forest roads. The company was disbanded in 1942 at which point most of the enrollees were then enlisted in the U.S Armed Forces during World War II. The present panoramic photograph pictures about 175 Black members of the company in basic uniforms, bookended by about a dozen white commanding officers and another half dozen officers sitting at center. A striking image of an important and early African-American CCC unit.
