Illustrated with woodcut vignettes in the text, and with [6] folded leaves of plates; lacking part of plate no. 1, after the first fold. Bitting notes the "plates are not usually present until the 9th edition and those that follow" (page 438). Other titles: Accomplished Gentlewoman's Companion; Compleat Housewife. FIRST EDITION. An important cookbook. "After Hannah Glasse and, perhaps, Elizabeth Raffald, Eliza Smith is one of the best known of 18th Century cookery writers...' (Maclean page 134). Originally published in 1727, The Compleat Housewife was issued in many editions; in 1742 it became the first cookbook printed in what was to be the United States, fifty-four years before the first cookbook compiled and published in the U.S., Amelia Simmons' American Cookery (Hartford, 1796). The author was a cook or housekeeper, and the recipes were drawn largely from her private recipe manuscripts, the tradition to date, though one which was waning as more cookbooks were compiled with recipes borrowed from other books. The medicinal recipes were included largely to help less fortunate neighbors, as the members of the household would have a doctor (Lehman, The British Housewife). During the author's lifetime her name appeared only as "E_ S_", expanding to "E. Smith" in the fifth edition, but never appeared fully as "Eliza Smith". Lehman concurs with Genevieve Yost that there is no evidence for the author's first name being Eliza (Lehman, page 450-51). ~ Lacking part of the first plate as noted above; otherwise folding plates are clean and sound. A few small pencil annotations to text. Rebound in red calf, using original, gilt-paneled boards; new hinges and gilt-titled and -decorated spine panel. Generally near very good. Rare; not one copy of the first edition sold at auction in the last fifty years (RareBookHub). [OCLC locates six copies of the first edition; Bitting, page 438 (but only for the fourth edition of 1730; Maclean, page 134].

The 'Black bellied Yankee' made their mark … everyone gives us credit for doing well & I think we did excellently well. … My loss was not very heavy, not over thirty all told. The other Regts in my Brigade suffered much more severely on the last charge, I being held in reserve & not being under fire but a few moments, they did gallantly…" FREDERICK MORTIMER CRANDAL. We have had hard marching & hard fighting. A week in trenches & a successful charge. The 'Black bellied Yankees' made their mark … everyone gives us credit for doing well & I think we did excellently well.… My loss was not very heavy, not over thirty all told. The other Regts in my Brigade suffered much more severely on the last charge, I being held in reserve & not being under fire but a few moments, they did gallantly… We are part of an expedition going into the upper country. We are now about 200 miles up the Alabama … I got 125 recruits in Blakely more than the whole division beside. This puts my aggregate something over 800 … I intend to have a thousand men before we get back. I don't suppose there is any chance of you getting along, for [Gen. John P.] Hawkins tried hard enough before he left New Orleans, but Canby has no respect for persons. Gen Hawkins can get no favors from him any more than anyone else & I don't think he would favor any body if he knew it … I came near being drowned the other night, falling over board from a small boat as I was coming from Gen. Steeles boat. I went under a steam boat & came out on the other side & had to do some rapid swimming to catch the boat. I saw two men drowned about an hour ago & no one could help them. There have been 6 men drowned that I know of since we started. The current is very swift & there is little chance for a man with his clothes on. I have no doubt you find your self led off by the fascinations of the fair Cyprians now & then. Virtuous as I am I found my self no match for their seductive arts when I was in the Crescent City … May you live a thousand years…" Historical Background The Siege and Battle of Fort Blakely (April 2-9, 1865) was a significant aspect of the campaign, led by General E.R.S. Canby, to capture Mobile, Alabama. Crandal commanded the 48th U.S. Colored Troops in General Hawkins's Division, as part of Frederick Steele's column that moved west in support of Canby in the late winter of 1865. Crandal's official report (April 12, 1865) states: "…the Forty-eighth Regiment U.S. Colored Infantry arrived in front of Blakely on April 1. Went into camp and remained until Sunday morning, when skirmishing commenced in front. The regiment was ordered into line of battle, forming the left of the brigade, with one company of skirmishers in front covering the battalion. We moved forward, the skirmishers driving the enemy within about 500 yards of their works. The regiment lost fifteen men killed and wounded by the explosion of shell in the ranks. The regiment being in an exposed position was moved to the right into a ravine … Sunday night this regiment commenced work on the first parallel … Tuesday afternoon the regiment moved back a short distance into another ravine as a reserve, and remained there until Saturday, the 8th, with very heavy details working on battery for 30-pounder Parrott guns. Saturday moved up to the original position to support a battery, and remained there until Sunday afternoon at 5 o'clock, when the regiment was ordered up to support the Seventy-sixth and Sixty-eighth Regiments in the charge on the enemy's works. The Forty-eighth participated in the charge with but slight loss, as it was not brought up under fire until the last rush was made… The men and officers deserve great praise for the cheerfulness with which they did hard and disagreeable work. All did well, and there was less skulking than is usual in actions of as great severity." Confederate commander General John R. Liddell, with only 4,000 men, held out against Canby's superior force until Spanish Fort fell on April 8, after which Canby concentrated his men for the assault on Fort Blakely, described here by Crandal. It was the last major battle of the war, and African-American soldiers played a critical role. In General Steele's column from Pensacola, besides the 48th U.S.C.T., there were eight other regiments of U.S.C.T. Sadly, and ironically, given Crandal's discussion of the danger of infantrymen drowning, Julian Bryant himself drowned in Texas on May 14, 1865. He was the nephew of famed editorialist and poet William Cullen Bryant. Frederick M. Crandal (1831-1911). At the start of the Civil War, Crandal became adjutant of the 33rd Illinois Infantry under General Charles E. Hovey. When the 48th United States Colored Infantry was established, he became its colonel. He led his unit during the assault and capture of Fort Blakely, Alabama in early April 1865. For this he was brevetted brigadier general. In May he was given command of the 1st Brigade (1st Division) U.S. Colored Troops.

Oblong 4to, 180 x 276 mm., bound in original cloth with lettering and decoration on the front cover. Tbilisi: Zaria Vostoka, 1941. This album showcases toys and educational materials for kindergarten children produced by the Georgian scientific-research institute, and provides a unique insight into Soviet pedagogy. The work is particularly important as it promoted the toys which later became mainstream. The album is divided into four parts: "Educational Toys" (20 ill.), "Construction Toys" (6 ill.), "Folk Toys" (4 ill.) based on the famous Georgian folk tales, and "Outdoor Toys" (5 ill.). Each article is supplemented with the illustrations giving a valuable insight into the process of learning in Soviet Georgian kindergartens. The photos date back to the late 1930s. The album features 4 colored illustrations of the educational toys, "Triala", "Seqtorina", and "Tsibruti", as well as 11 black and white photographs depicting teachers using preschooler toys produced by the institute and kids playing games. As stated in the introduction, the edition was intended to provide kindergarten teachers with precise information on the use policy for toys, give assistance in defining pedagogical purposes of games, and represent achievements of the laboratory so that toy manufacturing companies could start the mass production. The album decoration is designed by the artist T. Kechkhoashvili. Some minor marginal stains, but overall in excellent condition. Not listed in OCLC. Scarce. One of 800 copies.

Reverend Ira Hart (1771-1829) gave the book to his future wife, Maria Sherman (1774-1857). Hart was a missionary of the Connecticut Society, which flourished during the Second Great Awakening. A member of Parliament and leading member of the Evangelical Party of the Church of England, Wilberforce led the movement to abolish slavery. Ours is the first American edition. It first issued from London in 1797. The book became the manifesto of the Evangelical Party, emphasizing the importance of working for social justice. Wilberforce delivers a strong reproof of Christianity as practiced for its failure to abide by the true religion of love and human equality. 1818. A fascinating small collection kept by Susan Lane, who was born in Walpole, New Hampshire, about 1798, and died in Windham, Vermont. She wrote poetry and short prose. She goes on to teach, as indicated by a hand-drawn award of merit she pens, dated 1818. She married Elias Pulsipher and moved to Windham, Vermont. In 1870, she was living with a daughter and perhaps a niece. By 1880, she lived alone and died that year. The collection includes, 1. A Commonplace book with a great cover illustration entitled Sailors' Glee that is dated 1805. This includes poems, brief essays, a hymn, and practice handwriting. 2. A manuscript poetry and penmanship book entitled Application to Study Made Conspicuous by a donation _______ her preeminence over her class in spell Feb. 1 AD 1811. Covered in 1809 newsprint, the last page features a remarkable folk-art watercolor design. 3. Penmanship and poetry book signed by Susan Lane of Walpole, N.H. Jan. 1, 1803 [but actually 1813]. This includes a poem about the end of the war. 4. Penmanship and poetry book c.1810. Signed by Lane.

STRIKING 1875 POSTER ANNOUNCING A "HUMOROUS" LECTURE ON VIRGINIA NEGROES, DELIVERED BY A POPULAR ANTI-NORTHERNER AND FORMER SLAVE-OWNER, GEORGE WILLIAM BAGBY (1828-1883). The editors of "Representative Men of the South" (writing in 1880) state that: "[Bagby's] lecture on 'The Virginia Negro, Past and Present,' was prepared for the North, where he delivered it; but, the general subject being in that section considerably less popular in the lecture-hall than on the hustings, he failed sufficiently to interes his audience, and consequently soon laid the lecture aside. The truth is, the negro, although he once lent himself easily to the purposes of literary art, and no doubt will thus lend himself again, is just at present the subject of quite too little illusion, standing out as a naked fact, uncovered by so much as a shred of romance or a fig-leaf of picturesqueness. A better time undoubtedly is coming for this lecture, and when it comes may the gifted lecturer be here to improve it." (p. 430). Bagby was vitriolic in his assessment of New Englanders, writing: "The Yankee is not in any sense a person. He is a chattel of the worst possible master -- a machine. He is a bad version of Frankenstein [...] a wiper and cleaner of the dirty structure made by his own hands" (Selections of the Miscellaneous Writings, 1884, vol. 1, p. 183). Very scarce broadside. The date of publication is conjectured from text in the broadside itself ("Opinions of the Press"). Four copies are located by Worldcat: UMich (Clements), UVa, Virginia Historical, and Univ. Ten inches tall hardcover, green cloth binding, gilt title to spine, i-xxii, 838 pp. 710 figures in text. Light edgewear to covers, text unmarked. Very good in custom archival mylar cover. JOHN PATRICK CAFFEY (1895 – 1978) was an American pediatrician and radiologist who was one of the founders of pediatric radiology. He was the first to describe shaken baby syndrome, infantile cortical hyperostosis, and Kenny-Caffey syndrome. Caffey interned at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis before traveling to postwar Europe in 1920, working with the American Red Cross and American Relief Administration in Serbia, Poland and Russia. He returned to the United States in 1923, and by 1929 was appointed head of radiology at Babies Hospital, New York City, in 1929. Pediatric radiology would go on to become his life's work, and he would receive radiographs mailed from across North America for his expert opinion. In 1945, he published Pediatric X-Ray Diagnosis, the first definitive textbook on the topic. Caffey was the first to describe what is now known as shaken baby syndrome with a 1946 article on the association between long bone fractures and subdural hematomas in infants. He also provided the first description of infantile cortical hyperostosis, also known as Caffey's disease. He retired from Babies Hospital in 1960 and joined the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh in 1963 as a radiologist and a professor at University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Caffey was a founding member of the Society for Pediatric Radiology, and he received the American Medical Association's Jacobi Award; the American Pediatric Society's John Howland Award; and the American College of Radiology's Gold Medal.

There are additional French notes on the back that do not concern the drawings. Abb de Saint-Non (Jean-Claude Richard) was important in Eighteenth Century French art and archaeology. Between 1781 and 1786, he published a massive study titled Voyage pittoresque ou Description des royaumes de Naples et de Sicile, one of the first books to illustrate the hidden finds of Pompeii and Herculaneum. These sketches probably correspond to some of the ancient sexual drawings. The manuscript is in fine condition with light soiling to the paper.

This is a suspenseful tale involving mesmeric trances and mind control. As G&G points out, Doyle's interest in this subject can be traced back to the time when he was in medical practice in Southsea. The American edition is sought largely for the four Howard Pyle illustrations, which did not appear in the London "Acme Library" first edition. This is a fine copy. Green & Gibson A17b.
