Description
Paris: Gaspar Meturas, 1653. FIRST EDITION. Contemporary stiff vellum; title dusty, some dampstaining, first quire chipped at the top with no loss. A good copy in original condition. First edition of the French translation of Riolan’s landmark medical text. The Latin version was published 4 years earlier, and in his translation the author took the opportunity to introduce new theories, better anatomical descriptions, and responses to some of his contemporaries who found fault with the original text. In six books, Riolan describes the limbs, muscles, organs, and bones of the human body and how each works. He also shares his controversial theories about blood circulation that went against many of his contemporaries. However, the accurate descriptions in this work actually proved his system wrong. Jean Riolan the Younger (1577?-1657) was a French physician and anatomist. He was the personal doctor of Marie de Medici until her death. The Evan Bedford Library of Cardiology 168; Portal, Histoire II: 279-306; Not in Krivatsy, Wellcome, or Osler.

Solid and VG+ in its light-green cloth, with just a touch of mild staining along the head band. And in a bright, presentable, VG- example of the iconic Tolkien-illustrated dustjacket, with moderate chipping and creasing at the spine ends (1 1/2" of loss to the foot of the spine) and along the panel edges. Still though shows very well. 12mo, illustrated in black-and-white line-drawing by the great Tolkien himself.

Description
Cambridge; Boston: Joyce Chen Associates; Designed and printed at The Nimrod Press, 1962. Square octavo (23 x cm.), 223, [4] pages. Illustrated. FIRST EDITION. The original self-published cookbook that was to become an evergreen classic of Chinese-American cooking, a book which perhaps did more to introduce Chinese home cooking to Americans than any other before. Cambridge-based Joyce Chen (1917-1994) was a chef, author, television personality and enterpreneur. She had several acclaimed restaurants in Cambridge. Chef Ming Tsai called Chen the Chinese Julia Child [...] Joyce Chen helped elevate what Chinese food was about. She didn't dumb it down. She opened people's eyes to what good Chinese could taste like." Laid-in are five related items, including a four-page "Christmas Thoughts", an insert printed a year later for the 1963 holiday season; a four-page Mail Order Catalog with envelope, and a typed letter signed, introducing a special pastry service at Chen's restaurants. Interior is clean and sound. In original pictorial boards, printed in brown and grayish blue. No dust jacket as issued; later printings of this edition were issued in tan cloth and a dust jacket that mimics the design on the original boards. Fine. Signed by the author, "Joyce Chen" on a preliminary blank.
