About very good.
Description
Mexico City: Imprenta de Luis Abadiano y Valdes, 1837. About very good.. 8pp. Small quarto. Single sheet, unstitched. Minor wear at edges. Light dampstaining and dust soiling. Light tanning. Scarce, anonymous appeal by Mexican citizens to President Anastacio Bustamante to halt the ongoing depredations of Texans and freemasons in the borderlands in 1837. After a lengthy opening section that laments the low state of the Mexican nation, government, and people, the writer demands that the president and government stop sitting on their hands and respond to the threats facing the country: "¿Que respondera V.E. a la Patria? ¿Que respondera a Dios? Que a su coniencia, cuando ya habiendo servido a ese puñado de malvados dieren de mano a V.E., y desde el suplicio que le preparan, desde el calabozo a que le reduscan, vea V.E. y sepa que ya los Tejanos avanzan sobre nuestro territorio: que alguna otra potencia nos amaga; que ya los Yorquinos se distribuyen los bienes de las Iglesias; que ya expelen a los Obispos; que ya establecen la tolerancia.... ¡Dios Santo! ¡Que remordimientos tan tristes devoraran esa pobre conciencia!" OCLC locates five copies, at Yale, Berkeley, UT Austin, the San Jacinto Museum, and the BNM.

Description
Newark, NJ: The Clark Thread Company, 1880. Very good. Large trade card, n. d. (1880s); 7 x 5; lithographed illustrations (color and monochrome); slight crease to upper right corner, else minor wear; in very good or better condition. A beautiful advertisement for Clark's O.N.T. Spool Cotton, the card pictured a white lady sitting and leisurely embroidering, while an African American woman stood behind her, holding a large basket of raw cotton. The verso proclaimed: "Patronize American Industries!" and showed a bird's-eye view of the Clark factory in Newark, New Jersey. Founded in 1864 by Scottish-American brothers George and William Clark, the company would become famous for their thread, specifically manufactured to work well with the-then-new invention - sewing machines. It would become the largest threadmaker in the nation by 1873. In 1888, Scientific American would pronounce their factory's chimney (prominenly visible on the current card) as the highest one in the United States at 335 ft.
