Archive of manuscript material for Rudolph Wurlitzer's 1968 debut novel "Nog," including a complete first draft of the novel, showing significant differences from the published version and with an unpublished final chapter, and over 300 loose manuscript pages, both with extensive manuscript annotations throughout. As complete and detailed an archive regarding a writer's creative process as we can imagine. From the collection of Rudolph Wurlitzer, with full provenance available. A landmark of postmodern American fiction and a bona fide cult classic, whose plot is best summed up by the rear panel copy of Two Dollar Radio's 2009 reprint edition as "the tale of a man adrift through the American West, armed with nothing more than his own three pencil-thin memories and an octopus in a bathysphere." On publication, "Nog" drew favorable comparisons to the work of Thomas Pynchon and Samuel Beckett, with Pynchon himself stating it was "more than a beautiful and heavy trip, it's also very important in an evolutionary way, showing us the direction we could be moving in," and Jack Newfield stating in his revew for the "Village Voice" that the novel's impact on literature is "what Dylan is to lyrics." After reading the novel, director Monte Hellman would tap Wurlitzer to write the screenplay for "Two-Lane Blacktop," leading to a second career which saw him pen scripts for Sam Peckinpah, Alex Cox, Robert Frank, and Bernardo Bertolucci. Included in the archive is a first draft of the novel with significant differences in both text and structure from the published version, and extensive revisions, deletions, and corrections to the text by Wurlitzer. Most importantly, the manuscript contains an unpublished final chapter, mirroring the first chapter in structure and providing a completely different ending than the published novel, which concludes with the penultimate chapter of this manuscript draft. 177 pages, rectos only, with both typescript and xerographically duplicated pages, with manuscript ink and pencil, copied, and typed annotations throughout. Also included in the manuscript in a xerographically duplicated copy of Wurlitzer's story "Octopus," as it appeared in the Summer 1966 issue of the "Paris Review." In addition to the heavily revised manuscript, the archive contains approximately 320 loose manuscript pages, containing rewrites and edits to content of the novel, including multiple versions of the same pages or passages, primarily a mix of typescript and xerographically duplicated pages, with extensive manuscript, copied, and typed annotations throughout, and with occasional handwritten pages of text or notes also present. Also included is an additional typescript draft of the first three chapters of the novel, appearing to closely resemble the published version, as well as the 2009 reprint edition of the novel. New York: Charles Scriber's Sons, 1903 Illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of Slocum, eleven plates, and a fold-out map at the rear. First edition thus (first abridged edition). Presentation copy, signed and inscribed by Slocum with a quotation from the book (second paragraph, first line): "'As for myself the wonderful sea charmed me from the first' Joshua Slocum [illegible] Aug 16th 1903". Publisher's dark red cloth, with front board and spine elaborately decorated in brown, and lettered in black. Very good or better, with some rubbing and flaking to spine and front board, light wear to spine ends, lightly bumped top edge of front board, and bookplate to front free endpaper "Charlotte Richmond, [VA?]", with a note penned by the owner on the provenance of Slocum's inscription: "This book was given to me by the old captain when I took cookies out to him, while anchored nearby". Overall, a great, uniquely inscribed copy. Sailing Alone Around the World (1900) is Captain Joshua Slocum's firsthand account of his incredible solo circumnavigation of the earth, which took three years (1895-1898) and covered more than 46,000 miles. During the voyage Slocum encountered a number of life-threatening dangers, including gales, gear failure, and pirates. Slocum spent a year renovating his sloop, The Spray, before setting sail on the trip. He sailed without the use of a chronometer, relying instead on dead reckoning, a traditional navigation method. He also never learned to swim, believing it to be a useless skill. Nathaniel Philbrick, author of In the Heart of the Sea, described the book as "Walden without training wheels." In the Preface of this edition, Slocum explains how he collaborated with Dr. Edward R. Shaw to abridge Sailing Alone Around the World so that it could be used in schools and serve as "a story of adventure and a lesson in geography all in one." . Inscribed by Author. First Edition Thus. (late 19th-century); images aprrox. 6 1/4 x 8 1/4; barely-visible, pencilled, manuscript captions; upper corners of a few of the photos with small wrinkles (from being glued); two of them with small, closed cuts to edges; overall in very good condition. A fabulous collection of images, it documented a 19th-century trip to Moscow of an American (?) traveller. All, but one of the photographs featured images of landmarks and views of the city, mostly centered around the Kremlin, including the Big Bell (Tsar Bell), the Monument to Minin and Pozharsky, the Novodevichii Convent, the Triumphal Arch of Moscow, several different views of the Kremlin, etc. A few of them also showed random people, including a peasant with a small stand, selling (?) an unidentifiable product and a horse-drawn cart along the Moskva River.

Patented by one W. W. Whitcomb, the tent and the dryer were sold by Rufus Mitchell Yale (1822 - 1899) was a military officer, prominent Boston businessman, and a preeminent manufacturer of sails, banners, flags, awnings, and tents, and agent for the New England States for the tent and the dryer. The leaflet described the advantages of the two products and their superiority over other similar inventions, including the ability to fold the tent and store it in a 1 x 1 x 6 ft. box for easy transportation. Despite the superlatives, a curious little note at the bottom of pp. 3 announced: "The proprietor wishes to dispose of the right for New England to control Clothes Dryer, and of the other states, both the Tent and the Dryer. Address the Patentee at Boston." Perhaps, the inventions were not quite as magical, as they were portrayed to be...
