Description
1890. (CONSTANTINOPLE) (ISTANBUL) FETTEL, Constantine J. Panorama de Constantinople [cover title]. (Constantinople: C.J. Fettel, 1882). Oblong folio (15 by 13 inches), original half red morocco, gilt-decorated red cloth, accordion-fold (leporello) panorama of ten vintage albumen prints (each measures 10-1/2 by 8-1/2 inches, for a total panoramic view of 8-3/4 feet); mounted on card stock, with cloth hinges. $3500.Rare exceptionally large photographic panorama of Constantinople from 1882, by Constantine J. Fettel, with ten mounted vintage albumen prints linked together to offer a wonderful accordion-fold panoramic image of the city spanning nearly nine feet in length—an exceptional view of majestic mosques, churches and palaces—in original gilt-stamped cloth binding. This splendid gilt-stamped Panorama album of Constantinople contains an exquisite accordion-fold panoramic view of the city, dated 1882 on the rear board. Created by the Mideast studio of Constantine J. Fettel, the album displays ten vintage albumen prints, each mounted on card stock and hinged with cloth to create a panorama 8-3/4 feet in length, offering an exquisite view of Constantinople's majestic palaces, mosques and churches, along with the rich splendor of Byzantine architecture. Photographic albums and panoramas such as this one supplied ""evocative imagery to the increasing number of people who undertook the Victorian Grand Tour"" (Hannavy, Encyclopedia of 19th-Century Photography I: 1730-4) and captivated a world newly spellbound ""by photography's capacity to 'take them there,' and bring them directly in contact with the long ago and far away"" (Parr & Badger I:18). A bit of toning to the mounts only; light rubbing and darkening to cloth, gilt bright. Albumen prints in excellent condition. A near-fine copy of this splendid and large panorama.

Description
Typed letter, signed by Dubuffet accompanied by ca. 32 leaves of additional manuscript materials, typescripts, and hand annotated mimeograph correspondence and production notes from Sewell Sillman, Arnold Glimcher, and the office of Jean Dubuffet. Includes original documents and their French-English translations ; seven (7) silver gelatin photographic page proofs showing monochromatic gouaches by Dubuffet (images ca. 4 x 6 in. to 6 x 8 in. ; one printed on 11 x 14 in. photo paper) ; six (6) negative transparencies showing monochromatic gouaches by Dubuffet (ca. 8 x 10 in. each). Items housed in manila file folders marked "J. Dubuffet" and "Ives Sillman." Small folio. Very good with slight handling marks. [1235] A fascinating set of materials documenting the apparently unresolved interchange between publisher Sewell Sillman, artist Jean Dubuffet, and his gallerists Pierre Matisse and Arnold Glimcher concerning the reproduction of 50 images from 1943-1974. The correspondence shows Dubuffet's meticulous notes concerning his preferences for the style of publication, from the size of the images to the scale of the page margins. Dubuffet also confronts his Glimcher's fears that the album of gouaches might be used by counterfeiters to dupe American audiences for his prints. The items constitute a rich and textured view of the cultural and technical challenges of art book production during the late 20th century. They also present the tantalizing view of a printed work that might have been, but never actually was produced.

Dublin: Printed for Messrs. Lynch, Colles..., 1786. Original calf [hinges starting, some rubbing]. Raised spine bands, gilt-lettered red morocco spine label. Pictorial bookplate of Paul Gurley Merrow on front pastedown. viii, [8], iv, 372, [8] ccxxxiii, [23], pp [complete and as issued, except that in our copy the pages numbered i-iv (third count) have been bound out of order within the Index pages]. Some spotting to the early leaves. Good+ [bound with] Cooke, William: ADDENDA TO THE COMPENDIOUS SYSTEM OF THE BANKRUPT LAWS. Dublin: Printed for Messrs. Lynch, Colles... 1790. [7], [1 blank], cl pp [as issued. Light uniform toning, Very Good. This is the first edition of the 'Compendious System.' The 'Addenda' is a bit quirky bibliographically. ESTC records only ADDENDA TO THE FIRST EDITION OF A COMPENDIOUS SYSTEM OF THE BANKRUPT LAWS. London: 1789. It does not record this printing. OCLC records a lone holding of our Addenda, at the Library of Congress, whose OCLC entry advises that it "was bound together subsequent to publication" with our first edition of the Compendious System. The author was the son of a jeweler who became a recognized authority on the law of bankruptcy. He served in numerous official positions and was appointed a King's Counsel in recognition of his achievements. Paul Gurley Merrow, whose distinctive bookplate can be viewed at the web site of the University of Delaware Library, grew up in Hartford and graduated from Yale. He was evidently an enthusiastic book collector whose bookplate is described on several online sites. ESTC T224310. OCLC 247367270 [1- as of February 2015].

Description
Sullivan, IL: s.i., 1972. Very Good +. [Sullivan, IL: 1972]. Quarto (25cm); comb-bound vernacular photo album, heaavy coated cardboard with collaged covers and black and white photos pasted to every page, including cover versos; [12]pp. Comb missing the first single and last two teeth, otherwise intact. Superficial scratches and light soiling to covers with toning and foxing throughout; photographs lightly finger smudged. Overall Very Good or better.  Most likely compiled as a presentation piece for the artist Bill Brumfield, the photographs pasted throughout show the unloading and unveiling (from under a floral bedsheet) his multimedia sculpture "Pennies from Heaven." The piece was displayed at the Sullivan, Illinois, branch of the First National Bank in February of 1972, as reported by the Moultrie County News. Smoking a pipe (likely decorative, though it is the '70s), Brumfield stands proudly next to his piece, representing "the close knit organization at the top and the flow of money into a sea of commerce below." The artist was a local who had ventured off to the Art Institute of Chicago where he met his wife and eventually moved back home to run the family furniture store. The bank, now the First Community Bank of Moultrie County, still stands on Main Street, though where the sculpture ended up is anyone's guess. .

Description
New York: Doubleday and Company, 1981. First Edition. 406pp. Duodecimo [21.5 cm] 1/2 maroon cloth over tan boards. Very good/Near fine. Closed tear to foot of jacket's cover. Warmly inscribed on the front free endsheet: "To Ila, To do wonderful, courageous, and outrageous things for women all the days of your life. Your sister, Sonia Johnson." Sonia Johnson (born 1936), who was a member of the LDS Church from birth, began speaking out in support of the ERA in 1977. National exposure occurred with her 1978 testimony in front of the U. S. Senate's Constitutional Rights Subcommittee, and she continued speaking and promoting the ERA and denouncing what she perceived to be her church's political activities against the amendment. After a well-publicized church trial in December 1979, Johnson was excommunicated. Afterwards, she continued promoting the ERA as president of the Mormons for ERA group. She spoke at numerous functions throughout the country and appeared on a number of television talk shows. "Sonia Johnson's roots in the Mormon church went back five generations. She'd been married for twenty years, was a dedicated homemaker and the mother of four children. Then, suddenly, her life began to come apart. Awakening feminism brought her into conflict with the church fathers, who, finding her guilty of promoting false doctrine, excommunicated her. Her husband wanted a divorce, because he was, he said, 'tired of working on our marriage." Sonia Johnson was shattered. But she has prevailed. Sonia Johnson is now a heroine of the Equal Right movement." - blurb from jacket.

Description
New York: Hawthorn Books, Inc.. Near Fine in Very Good dj. (c.1976). First Edition. Hardcover. [no significant wear to book, just a touch of fading to covers along the bottom edges; the jacket has a few tiny edge-tears and some associated wrinkling/creasing at the bottom edge of the front panel]. (B&W photographs) A history of ragtime, "from its inception through its colorful evolution," one of the first to be published after the "rediscovery" of this musical form and its most noted practicioner, Scott Joplin, after his music was used for the soundtrack of the hit movie THE STING in 1973. The author, a highly-regarded musician himself, discusses Joplin at some length, then "goes on to depict the exciting and often bawdy settings of the music: the earthy minstrel shows, the whorehouses, the cold and commercial publishing houses of New York's Tin Pan Alley, the traditional jazz emporiums of Dixieland, and finally the prestigious concert halls of the world." The Foreword is by Eubie Blake, one of ragtime's greats, who thankfully lived long enough (until 1983, when he died at the age of 96) to experience the attention and acclaim that came his way late in life. (This was apparently a review copy, as it has the original publisher's press release laid in at the front.) .
