Description
1833. Translated into English prose, with remarks on former translations, and notes, by The Translator of Savigny's "Of the Vocation..." [Abraham Hayward]. London: MDCCCXXXIII [1833]. Bound in early (contemporary?) purple watered silk stamped in gilt on the front cover and spine. First Edition in the English language of Goethe's final version of the legend of Faust -- this being a copy of the private issue printed for the translator (considered to have preceded the trade issue). The legend of Faust, and his pact with Mephistopheles whereby he pledged his soul for the instant gratification of unbound earthly knowledge, is known as far back as a German chap-book in 1587. Christopher Marlowe wrote his dramatic version around 1604, and a 1725 version of the chap-book is known to have been read by young Goethe (1749-1832). In Goethe's reworking of the story (as a hybrid between a play and an epic poem), which in all took him about sixty years to write, Faust becomes a dissatisfied intellectual who yearns for "more than earthly meat and drink" in his life; nonetheless, his first use of his new power is to seduce a teenage girl. Goethe completed a preliminary version of the legend (later referred to as Part One) in 1806; it was published (in German) in 1808. Goethe's much-revised edition was published twenty years later, in 1828-1829: it is noteworthy that the major sub-plot involving the teen Gretchen (to be "Margaret" in English versions), was entirely an invention of Goethe -- not in the original legend. In 1831 he finished writing Part Two -- which was published posthumously in 1832: quoting from the Faust website, "In contrast to Faust Part One, the focus here is no longer on the soul of Faust, which has been sold to the devil, but rather on social phenomena such as psychology, history and politics." As for English translations, there was an 1821 English edition of Goethe's preliminary (1808) Part One -- which translation was in 2007 attributed to Samuel Taylor Coleridge, though this has since been rebutted. Following Goethe's final German version of the legend in 1828-1829 and his death in 1832, there were two English editions in 1833, both translated by Abraham Hayward: the privately-printed-for-the-translator issue (as here -- with no mention of a publisher on the title page), plus a trade edition (also arranged by Hayward) published a month (?) later by Moxon of London. Compared to the 1821 translation of Goethe's draft, Hayward's translation is not only of Goethe's final text, but it is also acknowledged to be a truer translation. This private edition consists of an 87-page "Translator's Preface," 203 pages of text, and 74 pages of Notes / Appendix / Corrigenda. (The final page of text includes the doom of Margaret followed by Mephistopheles's final line to Faust, "Hither to me!"). This copy is bound in very early (contemporary?) purple watered silk, stamped in gilt on the front cover and spine; we have never seen a copy in any earlier binding (wrappers?). As with many of the privately-printed copies, Hayward's calligraphic signature appears on the title page; also, his handwritten corrections appear on pages lviii and 192 (in some copies there are additional corrections on pages 16, 209 and 246). Condition is remarkable for a 190-year-old volume in what likely is its original cloth binding: some wear along the rear joint (but the volume is tight and the original endpapers are intact), some sun-fading to tan, light wax residue on the front paste-down. In all, a quite collectible copy; both this privately-printed issue and the trade issue are very scarce. Provenance: Hayward's aim with the private issue was to be able to give copies to friends and associates: accordingly, this copy is inscribed by him on the front free endpaper, "J. Shapland Stock Esq. | from the Translator | A.H." (the barrister John Shapland Stock authored numerous books, including POEMS, Chiefly Translated from the German (London 1862).) Stock in turn inscribed, on the same leaf, "indorsed to James Colquhoun | J.S.S." (likely the 4th Baronet of Luss, MP for and Lord Lieutenant of Dunbartonshire). At the top of the title page is a private library number, which is said to be that of Æmilius Irving (1823-1913), a prominent Ontario lawyer and member of the Canadian Parliament.

Description
1912. London: Eveleigh Nash, 1912. 2 pp undated ads. Original dark blue cloth. First Edition of this autobiographical work, which initially appeared serially in Ford Madox Ford's newly-founded "English Review." What is remarkable about Conrad's reminiscences is how clearly he employed fictional techniques worked out with Ford,... wherein the narrative intensity increases as the story develops. To achieve that, Conrad used a constantly interrupted narrative as a way of unsettling conventional sequences and, thereby, established anticipation of the next episode. Conrad needed a method that permitted intimacy, up to a certain point, and then withdrawal, when he had revealed enough... so his reminiscences would be matters of attack and retreat. [Karl] SOME REMINISCENCES is generally believed to have slightly preceded the American edition -- which, as with subsequent English editions, was titled A PERSONAL RECORD. Wise claimed that only 1,000 copies were printed (apparently including some bound by Bell as the colonial issue), but Nash records have not survived to substantiate this. This copy is in very good-plus condition (minor rubbing at the extremities, endpapers cracking, faint evidence of bookplate removal on the front paste-down). Cagle A15b.1.

Description
1968. King, Martin Luther, Jr., original silver gelatin press photograph taken March 31, 1968 in Washington, D.C., documents his appearance at Washington National Cathedral to deliver the sermon "Remaining Awake Through a Great Revolution," four days before his assassination in Memphis on April 4, 1968. The image shows King on the Cathedral grounds with Dean Francis B. Sayre, Jr. and a Capitol Police officer, situating the civil rights leader within a major Episcopal institution at a moment of national crisis marked by debates over civil rights, poverty, and the Vietnam War. Sayre, an outspoken supporter of the movement who had marched in the 1965 Selma to Montgomery voting rights march, invited King to preach what would become his final Sunday sermon, linking the pulpit of the National Cathedral to the broader moral and political struggle for racial justice. Silver gelatin press photograph, Washington, D.C., March 31, 1968. Image measures approximately 4.5 x 4 inches. King appears in a dark suit and tie; Sayre wears a suit with clerical collar. The two men stand outdoors on the Cathedral lawn accompanied by a uniformed Capitol Police officer. Red editorial markings appear in the margins and along the periphery of the image, indicating press handling and layout preparation. Created within days of King's assassination, the photograph captures the intersection of religious leadership and civil rights advocacy at the highest levels of American public life. Sayre, grandson of President Woodrow Wilson, used his position to denounce segregation, McCarthyism, poverty, and the Vietnam War, aligning the Cathedral with the movement's national moral critique. Minor yellow toning visible in portions of the background foliage; light press markings consistent with newsroom use; image remains sharp and clear. Overall very good condition. Historically proximate visual record of King's final public sermon and his alliance with religious leadership in Washington.

llmenau: von Bernh Friedrich Voige, 1830. FIRST EDITION IN GERMAN. Original boards, gilt lettering on spine, covers a bit worn; some spotting, but generally in excellent conditions. From the library of Th. Renz with his light stamp on the verso of the title page. The author, Dr. Louis Duringe, recounts the important results of his ten years’ experience in dealing with the disease in Wien, Berlin and London, concluding that gout is curable. He starts with a description of the symptoms and development of the disease, distinguishing between the regular, the chronic and the anomalous gout. He then outlines the treatments that have been used depending upon the specific type of gout, noting the different approaches and their effectiveness. Duringe (b. 1780) born in Germany, moved to France where he settled and worked as a physician. He wrote Exposition de la doctrine médical Allemande (1827) and Monographie du rhumatisme ou études nouvelles etc. (1830; 1835).

Description
New York: Harmony Books, 1977. First edition. Very good plus.. First softcover edition of this pictorial checklist of SF, warmly inscribed by subject and contributor Philip José Farmer. Comprehensive visual encyclopedia of the state of the genre circa 1977, signed by SF author Philip José Farmer. The first edition offers a time capsule of the unwary world as it was, just before the first tendril of the Star Wars behemoth - if behemoths have tendrils - emerged later that same year. As it is, "Star Wars" and "George Lucas" are entirely absent from the index. Ash organizes the field by theme as well as by creator and media type, offering illustrated guides to such "thematics" as Galactic Empires, Utopias and Nightmares, Cataclysms and Dooms, Sex and Taboos, and Lost and Parallel Worlds; Farmer introduces the section on Religion and Myths, while other themes are discussed by Poul Anderson, Lester del Rey, Brian Aldiss, J.G. Ballard, Fritz Leiber, Arthur C. Clarke, and other eminences. Notable for an expansive section devoted to Fandom and Fringe Cults. 10.25'' x 7.5''. Original wrappers. Illustrated throughout in black and white and in color. 352 pages. Inscribed on front free endpaper by Farmer ("For Phyllis / Best Wishes from / Philip José Farmer"). Moderate edgewear, light scuffing to corners, spine creased. Light spotting to fore-edge.

While mountain ranges and the Indus River clearly presented, there are some sizeable portions of "unknown country" on the map.

Augusta, [Maine]: Kennebec Journal Print, 1897. Cloth. Very good. 8vo; 84pp stamped decorative black borders to dark blue cloth over board, gilt-stamped title to spine; book binder stamp to ffep; 11 b&w photographic illustrated glazed plates; b&w line illustrations of school desk styles, school buildings and floor plans; light scuffing to boards, light damp-staining to upper edge, no odors; very good. The education of children in the state of Maine was already of concern in 1895 when the legislature passed a requirement for a superintendent to send in an annual report. This report starts with the statement, "Any careful study of the condition of the schools of Maine makes clear the following needs: Better physical surroundings for the school children. More complete and competent supervision. Better equipped teachers. More intelligent arrangement and thorough mastery of the subjects studied. Better instruction in manners, morals, economy and citizenship. Higher literary and art ideals." Illustrated plates show photographs of school buildings, families, and children's projects. Other illustrations show building designs with floor plans and desk styles. A very interesting snap-shot of late 19th century Maine education.
