Description
Berkeley, CA: University of California Press, 1930, 1932, 1933. First editions. THREE ILLUSTRATED OFFPRINTS ON NEW SPECIES OF PROTOZOA FROM THE RUMEN OF INDIAN CATTLE BY MARINE CILIATE EXPERT C.A. KOFOID. Three 18x27 cm paper bound volumes in gray printed wrappers, volumes I and III with handstamp to cover, "With the compliments of Charles A. Kofoid, and volume II with handstamp of "NYSL June 1932 duplicate". Vol. I, signature of J. E. Guberlet top of cover, pp 471-544, 17 figures in text, plates 49-52; Vol. II, pp 53-152, 10 figures in text, plates 4-7; Vol. III, pp 1-34, 5 figures in text, plate 1. Browning to cover edges, very good+ in custom archival card folder. The papers describe new species of the ciliate fauna of the stomach of herbivorous animals of Southern India and Ceylon based on collections by CA Kofoid. Rumen protozoa engulf and digest a wide range of bacteria and can reduce the shedding of potential pathogens from the animal, although the effect is highly dependent on the composition of the protozoal population present. These protozoa are distinctive in terms of their phenotypic and behavioral adaptations, which allow survival in this harsh anaerobic environment. CHARLES ATWOOD KOFOID (1865-1947) was an American zoologist known for his collection and classification of many new species of marine protozoans which established marine biology on a systematic basis. Kofoid was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1913, the United States National Academy of Sciences in 1922, and the American Philosophical Society in 1924. PROVENANCE (Vol I): JOHN EARL GUBERLET (1887-1940) was a noted parasitologist and professor of zoology at the University of Washington.
