Description
Autograph Letter Signed, with illustration, 3 pages on bifolium measuring 7 x 9 1/4 inches with sketch on page one, London, March 10, 1821. Rennie writes to Admiral Viscount Keith (1746-1823) giving details about constructing an embankment for his estate, Tullliallan, in Scotland. At the time Rennie wrote this letter, he was renown for designing and building bridges, canals and harbors throughout England. Here he provides design details for the proposed embankment and sketches the slope he prefers on the first page. He provides greater detail in accompanying drawings rendered in another hand. Towards the end of the second page, Rennie refers to his construction, the Southwark Bridge. "The tolls of the Southwark Bridge are not increasing so fast as could be wished, the bridge itself is in a perfect state of security more so even than I expected...." He signs, "John Rennie," and continues in a post script. "Unless the earth of which the bank is to be made is Clay or of a retentive nature a puddle about 2 feet thick should be made in the middle of the bank to prevent the water from getting through it as in the dotted line on the Sketch." John Rennie died about seven months after he wrote this letter. Condition: Two small holes along center margin, another along horizontal fold on third page, slight tear at horizontal fold on first and second page, not affecting text. Letters of the elder John Rennie seldom appear for sale and those with drawings are particularly uncommon.

Description
New York: Lincoln Mac Veagh | The Dial Press, 1929. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. Presentation copy inscribed by Burnett to film producer Sam Marx. About Good, lacking the jacket. Blue buckram, bumped at the corners and rubbed at the edges, with yellow ink lettering on the spine and front board. Bound with some reading wear and a slight forward lean, slices to the fore-edge of the first two leaves with the pieces present and seemingly easy to mend, clean otherwise. This is the book that jumpstarted Burnett's career by landing him a screenwriting job in Hollywood. The text itself would be adapted into the 1931 Mervyn LeRoy film starring Edward G. Robinson, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., and Glenda Farrell.

Description
Omiya Kyusuke, 1867. Very good. Broadsheet (354 x 235 mm) with contemporary hand-coloring (several wormholes in the face of the robber and one above his head; portion of the paper on upper right defective, just touching text), affixed at upper corners to a sheet of modern paper. DRAMATIC ILLUSTRATION OF THE STRANGE TALE OF YABUHARA KENGYO, a villainous blind masseur / accupuncturist who was the subject of many Japanese folktales of the 19th-20th century. It is thought that he is based on some historical personage, but this has never been verified. The story goes that he killed his teacher and devoted himself to a life of crime. Here the evil Yabuhara, with an acupuncture needle in his mouth, having untied the victim's belt, rustles through the poor peddler's clothes seeking valuables. THE LEGEND: This fiendish blind masseur was originally named Sugi no Ichi. He kills a peddler in the mountains of Hakone and steals his money. The murderer also kills his teacher (Yabuhara Kengyo I) and then succeeds to his master's name as Yabuhara Kengyo II. He becomes a moneylender and becomes involved with the teacher's wife and so on. In our print, a statue of Jizo, protector of souls of deceased children, can be discerned on the far right, illuminated by lightning which flashes against the black night sky; the small stone that are piled up in front of it refer to the Sisyphean labors that these poor souls are condemned to do: stack stones on top of each other for all eternity, while demons gleefully knock them down. Jizo is also the protector of wayfaring travelers, which is curious because the victim of the present scene was himself a wayfarer! Perhaps the artist is implying that, having chosen a holy place for such crime, Yabuhara will be headed straight to hell. Our print of the Yabuhara story is from a series based upon popular kodan, or oral narratives. The kodan were often drawn from actual historical events that raconteurs spun into captivating narratives. The print names Ichiryusai Bunsha as the kodan who told this story, probably Ichiryusai Bunsha II (d. 1881). The author of the text itself, Kanagaki Robun, was a very popular writer during this period. Here he took the kodan account of the crime and gave it a literary polish. His extraordinary text reads: "A roll of thunder struck the peddler / street performer with terror, causing him to lose his breath in the mountains around Hakone. While traveling, it is good to have a companion to share the road, and the [blind] man who joined him on this journey also offered kindly [medical] treatment. But he was blinded by avarice, turning all to darkness before his eyes. He groped about, searching [his victim's] waistband. The waves lapped the lakeshore, unaware of the serious crime. Rather than "Sai no kawara" [see below]], this man's destination will be to a little hell or a great hell. Ultimately, he will be brought before the register of Enma, lord of the underworld, and once placed before the mirror of judgment, the sins of this blind man will become clear." NOTE: "Sai no kawara" is the name of the riverbank in the underworld where deceased children are condemned to limbo and where the bodhisattva Jizo (Ksitigarbha) protects their souls. We are grateful to Matthew Fraleigh for his translation and research.

Description
Denver, CO: Denver Litho Co, 1901. Color lithograph map [112 cm x 81] / [44" x 32"] Fine. 'A' condition. Colors are bright. Shows mining claims with survey numbers company groups, gulches, tunnels, range townships and a Leadville plat map. Some mines are colored and an index at the lower left corner lists the mine owners that is keyed to section numbers. Scale is 1200 feet to the inch. "Built on a dreary hill, surrounded by threatening mountains and buffeted by fierce snowstorms, Leadville is an ominous place, stark and cold. But hidden beneath the grime and bilious paint encrusted on the buildings like a patina are the remains of the wildest, gaudiest, most raucous mining camp in Colorado, the most glamorous, glittering silver town in the West. From the time silver was discovered in Leadville in 1875 until the collapse of the silver market in 1893, Leadville fascinated the world with its instant millionaires and villainous ways. It was known as both the wickedest city in the world and the most progressive mining town in Christendom." - p.118 'Colorado Ghost Towns and Mining Camps.'.

Description
The Saint. No binding. Near Fine. Vintage original 28 x 20" (71 x 51 cm.) poster, folded, near fine.Poster from the famous New York gay disco The Saint. The club opened September 30, 1980, and closed in 1988; however, it continued on through a variety of pop-up events which went on and continued into this century. Most of the posters from this period were created during the era of the AIDS crisis."The Saint was technically and creatively one of the best dance clubs of its era. The circular dance floor at 5,000 sq. ft (460 sq. m) was topped by a perforated planetarium dome 76 ft (23 m) in diameter and 38 ft (12 m) high. In addition to hiding the speakers, the dome served as a spectacular palette for the lighting effects, with a mirrored disco ball lowered into the space. The speaker cabinets were located on, and attached directly to, the outer surface of the dome, creating a very euphonic 'surround sound' effect. The sound system in the club consisted of 500 speakers generating 26,000 watts. In the center of the dance floor was a circular light tree constructed on a hydraulic lift. It contained 1,500 lights and as its centerpiece was a rotating, dual Spitz Space System hemisphere star projector, ten times brighter than those used in planetariums."Directly underneath the dance-floor level was a large lounge with several juice bars. Beer on tap was sometimes served for free to avoid the licensing oversight of the New York State Liquor Authority. Above and outside the dome was what would become the controversial balcony, where patrons could see down to the dance floor, through the scrim of the dome. It was there that men relaxed and, according to the sexual mores of the times, could indulge in sexual activities. Several times during the year, themed parties such as the Black Party and the White Party attracted celebrities from around the world. These Saint parties are considered by most disco historians to be the precursors to the circuit party."The nightclub was a success even before it opened. Membership packs with floor plans were distributed and before the club opened, 2,500 memberships had been sold at $150 each for the first 700 members and for $250 for the rest, with a waiting list established. "It was financed in large part by owner Bruce Mailman's other gay venture, the nearby New St. Marks Baths -- a gay mecca at the time. The nightclub's renovation cost $4.5 million, being $2 million over budget ($17 million at 2017 prices). Money was spent repairing the roof, paying six years of back taxes to the city and fitting out the interior. It opened initially as a private membership gay nightclub (returning the idea of a club to 'nightclub'), and set the standard for disco presentation, lighting, sound system, hydraulics and technical support."However, by the end of its second season, AIDS had begun eating through the fabric of gay life in New York City and began to take a heavy and relentless toll on the Saint's membership. Change came quickly: membership costs were lowered and the season extended into the summer so that the club was open almost all year round. By its seventh season, membership costs had fallen to $50. It also opened weekly for a straight crowd. Furthermore, by 1985, the Black Party performers were for the first time required to perform safe sex. By 1987, the performance emphasized masturbation, phone sex and mud wrestling, all a far cry from the club's early days which, on one celebrated occasion, a boa constrictor was used as a prop." Chicago: Scripps, Bross & Spears, 1857. FIRST EDITION. With a full-page woodcut plate of the Naperville Academy. Original publisher’s blind-stamped cloth, title in gilt on spine, minor staining to front cover and spine; very light foxing, overall an excellent copy. First edition of this history of Du Page county. Of particular interest are the author’s stories of the “strained” relationships that followed an influx of immigrants after the Black Hawk War. Specific towns are mentioned as well as the people who were influential in their organization. A fascinating look at the history and development of the land west of Chicago.
