Author
HOMER, WINSLOW

Description
Winslow Homer spent summers in the Portland, Maine area at Prout's Neck and jokes about its cold winter weather in this humorous letter. In this Autograph Letter Signed, 2 pp on one 8vo sheet, n.p., Jan. 7, 1905, he writes to his grocery merchant in Portland, Mr. Newcomb, asking him to forward his mail to Florida and thanking him for the "letter paper." "I was much interested in the account of the Snow banks, & hard weather. I am not as warm as you may suppose. It's much too cold here to shave early in the morning...I am really living in a kind of cold storage not too hot to spoil & not cold enough to freeze. I would like to be in Portland long enough to buy an orange - cannot find any here...Nothing but wild cats." He signs, "Winslow Homer." With a photographic postcard of the grocery story.
