Description
New York; Philadelphia: D. Appleton; George S. Appleton, 1851. Hand colored print (1), matted and framed with UV conservation glass. Hand-colored lithograph and elaborated by Adolphe Jean-Baptiste Bayot (b. France 1810-1866) based on paintings by Carl Nebel (b. Germany 1805-1855). Heightened with gum arabic by Adolphe Jean-Baptiste Bayot after Carl Nebel): "Nebel's version of Scott's entrance sticks closer to the truth and is packed with psychological drama. There is no doubt here that the war is still on. Loaded cannons are posted to sweep the streets, while a body of dragoons in the foreground gathers tensely with drawn sabers near General Scott and his staff. In a particularly effective narrative detail, one of the dragoon officers, on a white horse in the center foreground, glares at a lepero on the left who is preparing to throw a stone. From the street or from doorways and partially closed windows, other citizens watch with fear, curiosity, apprehension, indignation, and in the case of the lepero with the stone and the armed men on the roof, open hostility, an allusion to the violence that broke out shortly thereafter." In the introduction to the 1994 TSHA reprint of the Kendall-Nebel portfolio (pp. xxiv), Tyler comments: "Nebel's picture of the grand plaza of Mexico, with the cathedral in the center and the National Palace at the right, is almost identical to his earlier print" [in Voyage Pittoresque; see Item 435 herein]. Description
New York or Hollywood: Universal Pictures Corporation, 1925. First Editions. Stapled. The two items are "The Magic Book About a Great Motion Picture", the other, "Phantom Mysteries", which includes "The Phantom of the Opera" Game. The book is really a small booklet, 12mo (13 by 8.5 cm), eight pages including the cover, printed entirely in orange ink. It comes with a small sheet of red gelatine that when you place it over any of the four illustrations, an entirely new illustration is revealed and the original one vanishes. The four illustrations dominate their pages, taking up three quarters of their respective pages. The two center pages of the booklet relate ten factoids about the story and the film of the classic tale. The other item, The "Phantom Mysteries", is a single sheet folded both horizontally and vertically like many a map. Besides the Game, it has a crossword puzzle relating to "The Phantom of the Opera", six other riddles and/or games, and a puff piece article about the movie. The Magic Book is in Near Fine condition, with the vestigial markings of a paper clip the only flaw. The Mysteries is on a high pulp content paper and so it is very age toned and fragile. There was a clean tear down the horizontal fold, the two pieces re-attached with archival tape which is comparatively discreet but one can not but notice it. The envelope has typical creases and wear.

Description
Paris: Gaumont, 1983. Two vintage borderless photographs of director Andrzej Wajda on the set of the 1983 Polish-French film. With manuscript annotations on the verso. Based on the 1929 play "The Danton Case" by Polish writer Stanislawa Przybyszewska. Set in 1793, Georges Danton has returned to Paris from his solitary residence in the countryside just as the Committee for Public Safety under the direction of Maximilien Robespierre, his former ally, begins a massive series of executions. Danton meets his fate before a revolutionary tribunal, and is eventually sent to the guillotine. The film drew connections between the Reign of Terror during the French Revolution and the contemporary Polish "solidarity" movement against the Soviet-backed Polish government. Shot on location in France. 7 x 5 inches. Near Fine. Criterion Collection 464.
