Limited to 400 numbered copies (this being number 113), printed by Edwin and Robert Grabhorn at the Grabhorn Press in San Francisco. Large folio (14 1/2 x 9 7/8 inches; 368 x 251 mm.). [12, blank], [10], 423, [11, blank] pp. Thirty-seven woodcuts by Valenti Angelo. Printed in handset Goudy New Style on Unbleached Arnold paper. Title-page , colophon and final leaf printed in red and black. Original quarter red niger over beveled Philippine mahogany boards. Publisher's device carved into front cover. Spine lettered in black with five raised bands, red niger hinges, wood veneer endpapers. Top edge trimmed, others uncut. Edges and hinges with a light amount of rubbing. Still overall a near fine copy. "One of the Fifty Books of the Year. The largest undertaking of the Grabhorn Press to date. It took over a year to print, and was partially set up many times before the printers achieved a satisfactory style. As originally planned, the book was to have no illustrations; and spaces were left at the beginning of all divisions for large script initials to be printed in vermilion. After the first initial was printed, however, the idea was abandoned because the letters were not of satisfactory design and because the whole effect was too spectacular; and the spaces left for initials were filled in with rough woodcuts made from very soft basswood" (Grabhorn Bibliography). Vignola (1507 - 1575) was the first to codify the rules of architecture, and is best known as Michelangelo's successor in charge of the work on St. Peter's basilica, and for designing the Escorial and the Villa Caprarola of Cardinal Farnese.

In the publisher's dust jacket, $32.50 retail price on front flap, touch of shelf wear, a near fine example. Inscribed by the author on the title page: "To His Highness Mohamad bin Zayed / with warmest personal regards / James Baker." Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan (b. 1961), known by his initials MBZ, is the third President of the United Arab Emirates and ruler of Abu Dhabi. In 2004, former Secretary of State James Baker visited the United Arab Emirates as a Special Presidential Envoy to discuss Iraq's international debt. At the time, Sheikh Mohamed served as the deputy Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi. The inscription in this book is not dated and it is not clear when this book was returned to the United States.

Original cloth. 4to; pp. 297, illustrated in b/w throughout, with photographs, diagrams, and plans fo the general social concepts that developed through Geddes' stewardship of the FUTURAMA exhibit at the 1939 New York World's Fair. Spine a touch darkened, pastedowns foxed; overall, a very nice copy, much nicer than usual in the original fragile dust jacket, lightly worn with some quite light edge chipping and a short tear here and there. A legendary early treatise on the problems of modern transportation, this copy is inscribed "with love" and signed by Norman Bel Geddes in March of 1940 (the year of publication) at the top of the front pastedown. Bel Geddes designed the famous General Motors Pavilion for the 1939 NY World's Fair, which included the Highway and Horizons exhibit, more commonly known as "Futurama." He helped establish a new professional niche -- that of the "industrial designer," arguing for a closer relationship between engineering and design.
