Description
1926. HASSELWANDER, Albert. Ein Anatomischer Totentanz. 27, [1] pp. Illustrated with 50 collotype plates. Small 4to., 220 x 175 mm, bound in original publisher's half vellum over brown boards. Munich: J.F. Bergmann, 1926. Only Edition of this photographic anomaly, offering an "Anatomical Dance of Death," prepared for the use of artists, with a long preface on the illustrated history of the "Dance of Death" by Hasselwander. There are 25 photographic plates of dramatically positioned nudes, each one accompanied by 25 photographs on the facing plate capturing their skeletal "death" portrait, in mirror position. Ein Anatomischer Totentanz, prepared in collaboration with the painter Fritz Stell, is far closer to a photographic "Dance of Death" than a medical work on the musculo-skeletal system. Dr. Albert Hasselwander (1877- 1954) was a professor of Anatomy at the University of Erlangen, Germany and is best known today for his publications Atlas der Anatomie Menschlichen Körpers in Röntgenbild, (1926) and Handbuch der Anatomie des Kindes (1938). Viewed artistically, the contrast of the nude photographs with their corresponding skeletons elicits an amusing but also disturbing response in the onlooker. Certainly, "artistic instruction" was the intention of the author Hasselwander, and yet, beyond the moralistic message inherent in Dance of Death works, Ein Anatomischer Totentanz evokes a Weimar Republic-like luridness and kinky voyeurism. In excellent condition, previous owner's stamp on front free endpaper.

Description
[San Francisco & Japan: Aoki Taisei-Do, 1929. Very good.. [56]pp. In Japanese. Original printed, stiff wrappers, cloth-backed. Minor wear and scattered staining to wraps. Light tanning internally. A fascinating and scarce Japanese-language textbook, intended for use by Japanese-American children in California during the late 1920s. The work was published by Aoki Taisei-Do, a San Francisco book and stationery store that catered to Japanese immigrants. The inside, rear wrapper states that this was was, "Approved by the California State Board of Education. August 1923. Published Aoki Taisei-do. San Francisco California. Printed in Japan, together with a 1929 date code. The book contains numerous illustrations throughout of young children, animals, plants, and more accompanied by Japanese text, and seems to have been a primer for learning to read and write Japanese for children born to immigrants in the United States. A illustration of Santa Claus and one of a English teatime table setting belie a bit of Western influence. Despite the printed discrepancy between approval and publication dates, we locate no other editions and only one copy of the present one, at the Bancroft.

Later Peters editions use the same plates and title design, but they spell the name of Louis Koehler with an Umlaut and the word "Concerte" as "Konzerte"; instead of Rich[ard] Schmidt, they list August Ruthardt as co-editor; and their contents pages are re-engraved, with some including incipits. There is also an edition in one volume using the same plates and the title page of the present volumes 1 and 2, but the contents are arranged in a completely different order (sonatas coming last); the uniform plate number is 6176.

Description
New York: Farrar & Rhinehart, Inc, 1942. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Good. 311pp. Octavo [21 cm] Bright red cloth covered boards with a black ink stamped title and gilt stamped designs on the spine, and a black ink stamped vignette on the front cover. The extremities are lightly rubbed and the spine is a bit rolled. There is a contemporary owner's inscription on the front pastedown and there is a bookseller's ticket on the rear pastedown. In the dust jacket, with heavy fading to the spine and a handful of small closed tears to the edges. Frank Waters wrote 27 books, including novels, biographies, histories, and essay collections. The majority of his fiction and non-fiction reflects Waters’ wide interest in the culture and religion of Navajo, Hopi, Pueblo, and pre-Columbian peoples. From the dust jacket- The man who killed the deer was Martiniano, a Pueblo Indian. Like many of his tribe, he was sent away as a youth to an 'away-school' where he learned the ways of the white man. But when he returned Martiniano found himself outcast from his tribe when he refused to participate in the ancient tribal dances, to wear a blanket, to cut the heels off his shoes, or to let his hair grow long. When he married Flowers Playing, a beautiful girl from the distant Ute tribe, his estrangement from his pueblo grew more acute, but not as acute as that fateful day when he shot and killed a deer on the government reservation. This precipitated swift action by the Government against the Pueblo which had been trying for many years to regain its sacred Dawn Lake in the region of the watershed under the Government's protection.

Description
London: Heinemann, 1948 First edition, first impression. Publisher's navy blue cloth with publisher's device to bottom right of rear board, spine lettered in silver, and tan endpapers, red topstain; in the original red dust jacket priced at 9s.6d.net. Very good book, with corners lightly bumped, boards bowed, spine slightly creased, and a small tear to the spine of front endpaper; good or better unclipped dust jacket, with heavy fading to spine and light chipping to head of spine and corners, a 1-inch closed tear to front panel, and some edgewear. Overall, a sturdy copy of a notoriously fragile book. Set in Sierra Leone during World War II, The Heart of the Matter follows Major Henry Scobie as he navigates the moral degradation and religious guilt that result from a romantic affair. Greene pulled from his own experience as a British intelligence officer in colonial Africa when writing Scobie's sympathetic character, who bears the struggling Catholic soul present in many of Greene's works. The Heart of the Matter was an immediate success, selling over 300,000 copies upon its release. In 2005, it made Time magazine's list of the one hundred best English novels since 1923. In 1953, the novel was made into a film directed by George More O'Ferrall and starring Trevor Howard and Maria Schell.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.

Description
L. C. Page and Company, Boston. Octavo First Impression with August, 1911 on copyright page. Bound in the original tan ribbed cloth with color cover illustration in red and green. The book is beautiful, virtually perfect and as new except for a slight corner bump and a discreet ink inscription on the front end paper. The excellent condition is explained by the presence of the original dust wrapper. The wrapper is chipped and worn with pieces missing from the titling on the spine. Still a remarkable survivor and still clean and bright with the cover illustration intact.

Description
[Princeton, New Jersey: Princeton University,] March 1969 Pale bule printed paper wrappers. . Octavo. With a full-page table comparing educational models. Fading and light foxing to front cover. Very bright and clean throughout. A very good copy of an uncommon item reporting the results of a study on how Princeton University could implement their decision to admit women. A committee of Princeton students, faculty, and administrators considered five models for incorporating women into the college: (1) "Separate educational institutions, joined by a 'treaty' which makes possible some sharing of facilities and faculty"; (2) "Two institutions with separate formal identities, but with one faculty identified with the men's college"; (3) "A separate women's residential college (or zone) within the University"; (4) "A single institution, with an established ratio of women to men students, but with no separate residential college"; and (5) "A single institution with no established ratio of women to men students." The present item summarizes the characteristics, advantages, and disadvantages of the five models. Princeton began admitting undergraduate women in the fall of 1969 under the fourth proposed model. The model allowed women to choose between living on campus in designated spaces (women-only dorms or women's sections in larger dorms) or living off campus and between eating and socializing in communal spaces with men or in their own dorms and private residences. The text reads: "This model avoids any connotations of 'segregation' and thus is attractive on grounds of principle to those who believe it is important that men and women students learn how to know each other simply as 'people,'" (p. 9).

Description
New York: William Faro, Inc.. Near Fine in Very Good+ dj. 1933 (c.1931). 3rd printing. Hardcover. [just a touch of shelfwear, modest age-toning to edges of text block; the jacket is lightly edgeworn, and has some random spotting on the rear panel]. Or, not. A "biography" (if we may call it that) of the woman who purportedly reigned as Pope of Rome for a couple of years during the 9th Century, but whose actual existence had long been a matter of dispute in church circles, and which is today now widely regarded as a myth. So basically what we have here is "historical fiction" with not much actual history underpinning it, although the author (rather grandiosely claimed in the jacket blurb as to be "probably the greatest student of Christianity in America") gives it the old college try: Part One of the book, "Pope Joan in History," purports to demonstrate "that Pope Joan was a definite historical figure, whose existence is as definitely established as that of any of her contemporaries." (Basically it runs through the evidentiary chronicle, then posits a conspiracy theory about the "smothering" and "suppression" of the truth.) Part Two, "The Life of Pope Joan" -- by far the largest part of the book -- is a pretty much made-up-from-whole-cloth account (with lots of dialogue) of Joan's life from conception to death (in childbirth, of all things). And just the bring the whole story home, I guess, there's a 4-page Appendix explaining the origin and playing rules of "The Card Game, Pope Joan." (Although it's tempting to believe that Wood -- famously the co-author, with his wife Gloria Goddard, of "The Complete Book of Games" -- just made that up, too, it was in fact a thing: per Wikipedia, "a once popular Victorian family game....an 18th-century English round game of cards for three to eight players.") .
