Bound by Bayntun (Rivière) Bath ca. 1948 (stamp-signed in gilt on front turn-in) in full wine red crushed levant morocco over beveled boards. Covers with elaborate floral design corner-pieces. Front cover with an oval border of gilt thistles and leaves and in the center a fine hand-painted portrait miniature (3 1/4 x 2 1/2 inches; 83 x 63 mm.) of Annas de Montmorency set under glass. Spine with five raised bands elaborately tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments. Decorative gilt board-edges, wide gilt-ruled turn-ins, marbled liners and endleaves, all edges gilt. With the maroon morocco gilt bookplate of W. A. Foyle, Beeleigh Abbey on front paste-down. Housed in the original felt-lined tan cloth slipcase. An exceptionally fine example from one of the major English collections. Francis I, King of France (1515-47), first of five monarchs from the Angoulême branch of the House of Valois to rule France ascending to the thrown in 1515. The Renaissance ruler was famed for his patronage of the arts and intellectualism as well as his political maneuvering with other European powers. Interestingly, it is not Francis featured in this Cosway style portrait, but the Duke Annas de Montmorency (c.1493-1567), a favorite of the king, and active statesman for Francis I's court. George Bayntun (1873-1940) was the founder of Bayntun Bindery (1894) dedicated to using traditional hand-crafted techniques and high-quality materials. "The Riviere Bindery was one of the most notable and prolific shops in London's West End from about 1840 through 1939" (Princeton). Bath-based Bayntun Bindery acquired the firm in 1939, transforming into the "Bayntun-Riviere bindery," which is still in existence and family owned. Although named after the English miniaturist Richard Cosway (1742-1821), the desirable "Cosway Binding" with its jewel-like portrait miniature set into a fine binding was first developed at the turn of the century by J.H. Stonehouse, director of London's Henry Sotheran Booksellers. Their miniatures were painstakingly crafted by the talented painter Miss C. B. Currie (1849-1940). As the style grew in popularity, other publishing houses quickly began to reproduce this technique-each developing their own desirable take on the aesthetic-referred to as "Cosway style.". Fine.

Measuring 140 x 90mm and collating complete with all four plates present: 101, [1, blank], [4, adverts]. Gentle rubbing to boards, but tight, square and pleasing. Faint ownership signature to front endpaper. Some offsetting to endpapers and title page; light scattered foxing throughout. Three inch tear to pages 21-22 archivally closed with all affected words remaining legible; marginal stain to plate at page 82. In all, a pleasing copy of a scarce work which OCLC reports at 12 libraries worldwide. This is the only first edition on the market. Old enough to be sent for daily visits to their Aunt, little Ellen and Rachel discover the joys of spending time with a generous and knowledgeable woman. Day by day, the two girls learn about the structure of flowers, the origin of Chinaware, and the caretaking of cats and pet birds. Over time, their aunt increases the complexity of her lessons. In addition to showing the girls how her livestock is raised and her property is managed, she also provides social lessons. Introducing Ellen and Rachel to her servants Isaac and Nancy, the Aunt urges the girls to understand their own economic privileges; for while Isaac and Nancy praise the generosity of their employer, they acknowledge that caretaking for their daughter Betsy and her seven children causes strain. Though the Aunt asserts that she ensures that all of her employees want for nothing, she allows the story to conclude with no additional offers of assistance to her longtime workers. Adult readers learn bit by bit that the generous Aunt, in fact, enjoys being perceived as generous; and near the book's conclusion she narrates the story of a young man Tom, whom she discovered being abused by the man who kidnapped him from the West Indies and enslaved him. Purchasing Tom's freedom on the spot, it does not occur to the Aunt to consult Tom about his wishes or to attempt reuniting him with family; rather, the Aunt places Tom into paid servitude to a family friend. A far more complex education book than its one and two syllable vocabulary would suggest, The Little Visitors gives insight into how young children like Ellen and Rachel can learn useful lessons from the adults in their life, as well as how those adults can pass along paternalistic views about race and class.

Measuring 135 x 80mm and collating complete including frontis: [4], 216. A charming example, with gentle bumps to corners and binding firm; rebacked with original spine laid down. Contemporary gift inscription to recto of frontis: "Fanny Tomkinson given her by Miss Morris. Febry 16th 1824." Slight offsetting to title and occasional foxing, but overall a fresh, unmarked example. Scarce institutionally and in trade, we have located 8 examples in OCLC. The present is the only copy currently on the market. An author of pedagogical texts and instructional novels, including Thoughts on Education, Maria Benson infused even her fictional work with lessons that encouraged women's learning. Following the adventures of Agatha Torrington, Imitation suggests that while girls should to some extent learn social graces and good behavior from the women around them, copying such behaviors is insufficient and can lead to danger. Prone to mimicking any and everything as a child, Agatha initially has no real sense of taste or even of self; she instead follows whimsically along copying other girls' clothes and actions. Notably, blame does not fall on Agatha, but on a wider system. She had been taught by her mother, and no one "informed Mrs. Torrington that she was not a proper person to educate the little Agatha...Her own education had been such...as to render her very unsuitable for an undertaking so arduous as the education of a child." This situation is contrasted against that of an orphaned neighbor; raised by her sensible grandparents, this little girl was taught in a Lancastrian school, gained self-knowledge and by ten was already well-read. As the two girls grow, Benson's point is quite clear: a society that discourages women's education has poor outcomes for all, and to that end, all girls and women should learn regardless of their future roles.

This guestbook began at the French Film Festival in Birmingham, England in 1957, but it is unclear where it was held afterwards. This work includes the signatures of the following Prime Ministers: Prime Minister Clement Attlee, Prime Minister Anthony Eden (and Lady Eden), Prime Minister Harold Macmillan (and Lady Dorothy Macmillan), and Prime Minister Alec Douglas-Home (and Elizabeth Home). Foreign Secretaries: Yugoslav Ambassador Ivo Vejvoda, German Ambassador Hans von Herwarth, Soviet Ambassador Yakov Malik, Gen. Cortland V.R. Schuyler (Chief of Staff, SHAPE), and Chief Minister of Gujarat, Jivraj Narayan Mehta. This book is also signed by the Honorable Richard Attenborough in 1960. The text includes twenty-one letters on various subjects, including confidence, prudence, jealousy, self-love, religion, conviction, friendship, the dance, conversation, domestic economy,etc. The final portion of the text is a guide to studies, including fine arts, science, geography, theatre, poetry, and novels. The author notes recommends Corneille, Racine, Ossian, Milton, Voltaire, Goldoni, and many others and notes that the English have produced the best novelists, citing the names of Richardson, Defoe, Smollett, Fielding, Goldsmith, Sir Walter Scott, Ann Radcliffe, and many others. He goes on to recommend three novels especially--Robinson Crusoe, Tom Jones, and The Vicar of Wakefield.
