Description
1957. First Edition. Signed. MALAMUD, Bernard. The Assistant. New York: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, (1967). Octavo, original half black cloth, original dust jacket. $1800.First edition, later printing, inscribed: “To Ruth, with affection. Bernard Malamud.""""Here Malamud develops the theme of spiritual conversion in flawless form"" (Vinson, 876). ""It is the lucidity of this story that makes it distinctive and that makes Mr. Malamud's vision shine simply throughout the stumblings and strugglings… All is kept simple, real, basic; there is the rightness that permeates this book. Yet around the simplicity of it there gathers and grows in the mind of the reader a sense of values and destinies and large truths—there is this mysterious accretion that contributes weight and size and beauty to The Assistant (New York Times). The first edition was published in 1957; this seventh printing was published in 1967. Book about-fine, with only faint foxing to endpapers. Dust jacket extremely good, with slight foxing, a bit of toning, and light wear mainly to extremities. A desirable inscribed copy.

London: Smith, Elder and Co, 1858. First Edtion. First Edtion. Original green fine-ribbed cloth, gilt lettering on spine. Published anonymously, this book of delicate poems has been said heralded as the first book of what is now called Uranian Poetry, a small group of pederastic poets who published works between 1858 and 1930. Cory, as many other Uranian poets, was steeped in Latin and Greek and his early poems show a remarkable, lyrical quality esteemed by his peers. Spine sunned with small tear, worn at extremities, hinges cracked. A very good copy of what is now an exceedingly scarce and historically significant book. No other copies located at time of research.

Paris: Leon Techener, 1877. First Edition. Softcover. Very good. 8vo. [4], 83 pp. Recent sympathetic wrappers, edges untrimmed (some a little frayed). Copy no. 74 of 100 numbered copies, being one of the first celebrations of 17th-century French illustrated books, published when the craze for 18th-century French illustrated books was at its apogee: "Nous aurions voulu appeler l'attention des bibliophiles sur l'ensemble des livres du dix-septième siècle, trop negliges aujourd'hui, quand ce ne sont pas des exemplaires des editions originales de nos classiques." From the introduction (translated): "We propose to describe the principal books illustrated by Sebastien Le Clerc; our focus is on Parisian imprints, and among these are the publications in which the text is particularly notable. As for the books that Le Clerc 'decorated' while he was at Metz: their description is almost impossible because these books are almost never found, except in very rare instances. We leave entirely aside that part of Sebastian's work, and assess only the works in which his prints, vignettes, headpieces, frontispieces, fleurons, and ornamental initials were executed specifically for Parisian publishers. We look to Brunet's 'Manual' for such books to be accurately described, but many of these were unknown to Brunet, or were poorly described by him. That so many are scarce is due to various causes, foremost among them being that most volumes were broken up by print collectors. [...] We want to establish that Le Clerc was a true innovator, and that he revolutionized the art of decorating books." ¶ Reprinted from the "Bulletin du Bibliophile," this work is particularly uncommon in the U.S.; only three American libraries report holdings to Worldcat (Emory, St. John's University, Univ. Michigan). From the distinguished collection of B.H. Breslauer, with his Bibliotheca Bibliographica Breslaueriana bookplate.

New York: Coward-McCann Inc.. Very Good+. (c.1939). First Edition. Hardcover. (lacking the original dust jacket, but encased in a professionally-made facsimile reproduction of same; see 2nd image posted with this listing) [good sound copy, light wear to extremities, spine slightly turned, age-toning to fore-edge, tiny spot on bottom edge of text block; vintage bookseller's label (Satyr Book Shop, Hollywood) on rear pastedown]. The original comedy from which the delightful 1940 movie of the same name was adapted. It was a Katharine Hepburn "project" all the way: having been named "box office poison" by American theatre owners in early 1938, a verdict seemingly confirmed by the financial failure of both films she appeared in that year, BRINGING UP BABY and HOLIDAY (ironically both considered top-drawer classics today). She then decamped to Broadway to appear in this sparkling comedy, which had been written specifically for her by Philip Barry (who had also written the play "Holiday" that the movie was based on). She was not only its star but also its primary financial backer -- and was already regarding it as a vehicle for her return to the screen -- and when the play was a hit (it opened in March 1939 and ran for a year), she leveraged her star power *and* her control of the rights to engineer her contract with M-G-M for what became her triumphant return to the movie world. The picture, directed by George Cukor (as HOLIDAY had been) was a smash (although weirdly, in retrospect, she was not among the Best Actress nominees for that year's Academy Awards), and Hepburn resumed her Hollywood career at the top of her form -- "poison" no more, and about to be fatefully teamed (in her very next picture, WOMAN OF THE YEAR) with Spencer Tracy. Surprisingly scarce in the first edition. NOTE again that this book bears a FACSIMILE dust jacket, to serve the dual purpose of protecting the book from further wear and enhancing its appearance on the shelf; its presence has not been factored in to our pricing. .

1868. London: Pickering, 1868. Small 8vo, xiv, 112 pp. and 8 pp. of ads at the front. Original cloth, red printed paper backstrip label darkened, some pencil annotations in the text. A very good copy. Ink signature at front of Wm. C. Pritchard. ß New edition, taken largely from the 1866 edition with some slight changes, including an expanded preface and two more poems. Although a typographic issue of the Songs had appeared in 1839 and Gilchrist and Rossetti had included them in the 1863 biography, neither of those versions were faithful to Blake s original text, with Rossetti in particular standing accused of efforts at improvement . The editor of this edition (Richard Herne Shepherd) gives for the first time in accessible form the exact text of Blake s idiosyncratic engraved publications of 1789 and 1794 (only twenty-two complete copies of each of which survive) though omitting lines from Mary and from Auguries of Innocence which contained the word whore . The additional poems, two of them previously unpublished, are printed from Blake s original manuscripts. Bentley, Blake Books, 335 B.

Fine
Description
New York: Vantage Press, 1954. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. 8vo., 74pp. Stunning First Edition. Square, tight and clean throughout with just a touch of bumping to the heal but quite minor. Equally attractive unclipped, ($2.00), has a hint of wear at the spine ends but barely noticeable. A fresh and bright example with no chipping, creases or tears. A marvelously well-preserved example. A gorgeous collectable copy of an uncommon book, particularly in this high-grade condition.
