Description
London: Macmillan and Co, 1893. First edition. Two octavo volumes (7 x 4 3/4 inches; 179 x 121 mm.). xxiii, [1, blank], 400; xxxi, [1, blank], 423, [1, blank] pp. With forty-six (ten full-page) illustrations by Harry Furniss in each volume. Each frontispiece with original tissue-guard. Verso of each title-page with small blue library accession number and a few leaves in each volume with the almost imperceptible blind stamp of the College of the Holy Names, Oakland, California. Bound ca. 1920 by Bayntun of Bath (stamp-signed in gilt on front turn-ins). Full maroon morocco, covers ruled in gilt surrounding an elaborate gilt central panel, spines with five raised bands, decoratively panelled and lettered in gilt in compartments, decorative gilt board-edges and turn-ins. red marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Slight staining from original cloth covers on facing last page of Sylvie and Bruno and last blank of Sylvie and Bruno Concluded. With the rectangular bookplate of College of the Holy Names, Oakland, California on both front paste-downs. A fine pair. Together, Sylvie and Bruno along with Sylvie and Bruno Concluded make up the final novel published by Lewis Carroll. "It is essentially a philosophical tract on morality, politics, and religion...packed with puns, paradoxes, puzzles, poetry, and Carroll's patented brand of inspired nonsense...Carroll entwines two plots, set in two alternate worlds, one the fairy kingdom of Elfland and the other a realm called Outland which mirrors and satirizes English society. In the former, Bruno and Sylvie endure adventures typical of classic fairy tales; in the latter, the two men vie for the love of a beautiful woman" (Publisher's Weekly). A departure from the Alice books, here Carroll tackles a number of more adult themes and plots. The poem The Mad Gardener's Song is the most famous poem in the book: "He thought he saw an Albatross That fluttered round the lamp: He looked again, and found it was A Penny-Postage-Stamp. "You'd best be getting home," he said: "The nights are very damp!" Williams, Madan & Green. The Lewis Carroll Handbook, 217 & 250.

Description
Little Rock, Ark, 1880. Printed broadside on silk, 8 3/8 x 3 1/2 inches, a program for the event. Former Civil War commanding general and President of the United States, Ulysses S. Grant visited Little Rock in the spring of 1880 and was welcomed by an enthusiastic crowd. He participated in a parade, made public appearances, and was toasted at a banquet in Concordia Hall. The event was recorded in an article in the :"New York Graphic" on April 26, 1880: "In the evening a grand banquet was given at Concordia Hall. It was the largest and most sumptuous entertainment of the kind that the local Delmonico had ever attempted, and it was in every respect a magnificent success. Plates were laid for 250 guests. Every one came in festive array and the solid men of Little Rock felt themselves proud to be numbered in the chosen band. General Grant was naturally given seat of honor, with Mayor [John G.] Fletcher, Col. Logan H. Roots, Governor W. R. Miller, Judge McCrary. of St. Louis, Judge Isaac C. Parker ["he hung 'em high] of Fort Smith, on his right and ex-Governor Powell Clayton, ex-Governor O. A. Hadley [and others] on his left. Gen. Grant gave the first toast, brief and to the point: 'The United States of America -- Forever United.'" Grant had returned from his nearly three-year world tour in December, 1879. He was considering running for President again in 1880 and may have been testing his strength of his renewed popularity in this tour through the south. The Republican Convention convened in Chicago in June and Grant was initially the most promising candidate, winning 304 of the 370 votes needed. Eventually the party compromised with various factions and James Garfield was chosen. Not recorded on OCLC. Some light creasing, a small spot or two, but a very nice example. Matted, glazed, and framed. (9797).

Description
The letters include discussion of revisions to various works, translations, rehearsals, suggestions for performance, financial matters, etc. With especially detailed commentary on the Torah Service: "A short prayer ... is intended before the Sh'ma begins. Therefore it is not really attacca. This is a service intended for worship use, not as a normal Concert pierce ... The Aliahs were written to provide a quiet procession for each person(s) ascending the Bimah ... You can do as many as you wish, but the refrain should separate each one ..." (letter of 5 March 2009) and corrections to the bar count in the score as "AMP was careless in not sending you updated scores..." (Letter of 23 March 2009). The letters also include high praise for Rosenbaum's interpretation of the composer's works: "Thank you for your enthusiastic embrace of my music, for the mobilization of splendid singers, for your meticulous, comprehensive preparation of the music, for your scrupulous attention to even the smallest detail and for your unflagging concentration in projecting the overall work in performance." (Letter of 8 June 2009). A Canadian-born American composer, pianist and conductor, Wyner studied at Juilliard, at Yale with Hindemith, and at Harvard with Piston, among others. "After a period at the American Academy in Rome (1953-6), he was active as a performer and composer in New York. His teaching appointments have included positions at the Yale School of Music (from 1963), the Tanglewood Music Centre (1975-97), SUNY, Purchase (1978-89), where he also served as dean of music (1978-82), and Brandeis University (from 1989) as well as visiting professorships at Harvard (1991-7). Among his honours are two Guggenheim fellowships (1958-9, 1977-8), the Brandeis Creative Arts Award, the Elise Stoeger Prize of the Lincoln Centre Chamber Music Society, and commissions from the Ford Foundation and the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival. He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1999." "Wyner's early works, such as the Partita for piano, show a neo-classical influence; later, he moved towards freer forms, employing jazz rhythms and a more varied chromatic language. The Concert Duo for violin and piano reflects this widening stylistic range. Many compositions are influenced by his Jewish heritage and experience; one of the most important of these is the Friday Evening Service. Major compositions from the late 1970s onwards, such as Fragments from Antiquity and On this most Voluptuous Night, are highly expressive works for solo voice and instruments." Vivian Perlis in Grove Music Online. Many of the Wyner's works have been performed by Rosenbaum's distinguished professional choir, The New York Virtuoso Singers.
