Description
New York: Whittlesey House / McGraw Hill, 1934. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Good. FIRST EDITON, SECOND PRINTING, INSCRIBED BY GRAHAM. Inscribed in ink by Graham on the front free endpaper: "To Meyer Willett / with the regards of / Benj. Graham / Oct. 1935". With the recipient's bookplate on the front pastedown. Inscribed copies of Security Analysis are exceedingly rare. Also with front panel and front flap of legendarily rare original dust jacket. Security Analysis marked the foundation of a new discipline, introducing to the financial world the now-essential concepts of security analysis, fundamental analysis, and value investing. Graham and Dodd transformed investing from what was often a purely speculative business with decisions based on misinformation, reaction, and emotion to a legitimate science based on systematic reason, logic, and analysis. "Graham, the senior figure in the Graham-Dodd pairing, is known as the 'father of modern security analysis.' He had been a Wall Street wunderkind in the 1920s, before seeing his firm nearly wiped out by the Great Crash. Security Analysis was an attempt to draw principles from that experience. Graham mocked the empty investment slogans that passed for wisdom before 1929--like, 'Pick out those individual companies which are most likely to grow rapidly.' Instead he preached a rigorous analysis of what was most knowable about a security--the company's expected earnings and the expected interest/dividends over a relatively near term, its tangible assets, and their relation to the security's price. The wise investor, moreover, always left a good 'margin of safety' between her judgement of the company's value and the price she was willing to pay" (Morris, The Sages: Warren Buffett, George Soros, Paul Volcker, and the Maelstrom of Markets). The recipient, Meyer Willett, was a senior partner in the investment firm Bristol & Willett. He held a seat on the New York Stock Exchange and spent his working life on Wall Street. With "Second Printing" on copyright page. New York: Whittlesey House / McGraw Hill, 1934. Octavo, original black cloth. Cloth with significant wear at edges, particularly the corners where there is some chipping; some patches of discoloration to boards. Text very good with only some small spots of dampstaining at extreme edges of some pages (far away from text). The dust jacket is essentially never seen - here the front panel and front flap have amazingly survived. ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT WORKS IN THE HISTORY OF FINANCE; WITH SCARCE GRAHAM INSCRIPTION.

Description
Braunschweig: Druck und Verlag von Friedr Vieweg and Son, 1916. First edition. Original wrappers. Very Good. FIRST PRINTING IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS OF ONE OF EINSTEIN'S MAJOR WORKS: HIS FIRST PAPER ON THE DERIVATION OF PLANK'S LAW AND PROVIDING THE THEORETICAL BASIS FOR THE LASER. "Einstein commended the 'unparalleled boldness' of Planck's derivation of 1900, meaning not only the problem itself but also the fact that it was based on assumptions that were not entirely free of contradictions. Einstein now succeeded in the first of two papers in eliminating that flaw. More interesting than the derivation itself was the general character of his methods. Einstein proceeded from Niels Bohr's basic--and by then well tested--assumption that the electrons within an atom occupy a number of discrete energy states, and are able, through emission or absorption of radiation, to pass from one of those states to another. Added to this was an assumption of thermodynamic equilibrium between radiation field and atom, as well as a consideration of the 'classical' limiting case at high temperatures--and there was Planck's formula. This brief argument... also covers emission stimulated by the radiation field; thus the formulas already, by implication, contain the theory of the laser, though it was to take nearly half a century to be realized" (Folsing, Albert Einstein, 389). Weil *85. The "implication" containing the theory of the laser was more fully developed in his companion paper "On the Quantum Theory of Radiation" published a few weeks later. In the first paper, Einstein wrestled with the concept that the atomic emission of radiation could be a directed process; in the second paper he convincingly demonstrates that this is indeed the case. IN: Verhandl. D. Deutch. Phys. Ges., Vol 18, pp. 318-323. Braunschweig: Druck und Verlag von Friedr. Vieweg and Son, 1916. Octavo, original wrappers; housed in custom half leather chemise. One thread (literally) resewn on wrappers, a little creasing and soiling. A beautiful copy. RARE IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS.

[Boston: Robinson Engraving Co, 1890. Menu, in painted wooden boards, bound with cord (20 x 15.2 cm.), 10 gold-printed leaves, each a die-cut circle printed versos only. An elaborate program of events for the eleventh annual meeting of the Hotel Men's Mutual Benefit Association, held in May, 1890 at Boston's great hotels, the Parker House, Hotel Vendome, and American House. The H.M.M.B.A. was founded in 1879 to offer hotel workers insurance plans; it was later to become the Bankers Life and Casualty Company. The program and menu for the three-day meeting includes the meeting itself, music, speakers, presentations, carriage excursions, etc. The painted wooden boards hold die-cut 'booklets' dedicated to the Convention, headquartered at the Parker House, the Eleventh Annual Banquet, held at the American House, and the Reception, held at the Hotel Vendome. The boards are scored and textured, painted in silver with gold spots, and hold a hand-lettered piece of 'vellum'. Some rubbing to edges of boards, otherwise very good.

Description
New York: Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1978. First Edition. Portfolio. Light glossy card stock. Near Fine. Portfolio contains eleven quintessential Avedon photos from the late forties and fifties, all black and white, a few of which are among his more famous, widely recognized, images. The models were among the most famous of the day, and ones Avedon worked with repeatedly. They were all the supermodels of the day, before the term was coined: Dorian Leigh, her younger sister, Suzy Parker, who parlayed her modeling career into movie stardom, Elise Daniels, Carmen (dell-Orefice), and Renee. Also among the photos is one of Marlene Dietrich, wearing a turban, lighting a cigarette. One of The striking aspects of the photos is how virtually all of them suggest movement, and none look the least bit posed. The models are not mere mannequins, in other words, but in some sense, acting. Also one intro leaf very briefly describing the content -- all the photos were taken in Paris, how to order the larger book, etc. Issued in conjunction with a 1978 retrospective of Avedon's work at the Metropolitan Museum. The leaves are each 25 by 20 cm, on the same glossy light card leaf as the portfolio housing them, which has a shallow flap to hold the leaves within. Other than a few light finger smudges on the cover, this is a fine copy.
