Ter Oefening van Jonge Schilders en Liefhebbers, naar't leven geteekend door de Kunstteekenaars Perkois en Prins, en in't koper gebragt door den Kunstgraveur M. de Sallieth. Rotterdam: J. Immerzeel, Jr., 1818. First edition. Thirty-three beautiful hand-colored plates depicting street vendors and other laborers, many of which are women, by Sallieth after Jacobus Perkois and and Huibert Prins. Title-page with an engraved vignette by H. Kobell. Small folio (11 1/4 x 8 inches; 286 x 205 mm). [2] pp. Contemporary blue glazed paper boards, rebacked. Boards with borders tooled in gilt. Boards with some minor rubbing and spine with a few tiny tears. Previous owner's old ink ownership inscription dated 1829 to rear pastedown. Engravings are extremely clean and bright. Overall a near fine copy. Housed in a modern blue cloth clamshell with morocco spine label, lettered in gilt. This is the rare first edition of this book which was meant as an artist manual depicting street vendors and other laborers such as fish mongers, wig makers and musicians, many of which are women, by Perkois who was a Dutch art teacher from the Drawing Academy in Middleburg, and Prins who was the secretary of the art society Pictura in The Hague. The engraver, Sallieth, from Rotterdam, is known mostly for his maritime views. There have been very few copies of this first edition at auction, and even fewer that are hand-colored. Bobins 429. Lipperheide Gb 46 and Hiler p.699 (ed. Amst., 1836); Colas 2312 and Beall N2 (ed. Rott., 1818). HBS 69045. $3,500.

They are the result of the attention which the author has bestowed, for above twenty years, on those complaints and he trusts, with confidence, that the experience of every practitioner who adopts them will confirm their utility." JAMES HAMILTON (1767–1839), son of Dr. Alexander Hamilton, studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh (in part under his father). He also studied at Paris, Leiden and the University of St Andrews receiving his MD from the latter in 1792. In 1800, he succeeded his father as professor of midwifery at the University of Edinburgh, and in 1808 he published Hints for the Treatment of the Principal Diseases of Infancy and Childhood adapted for the use of Parents, a second edition of which appeared four years later (offered here). In 1810 he was elected a member of the Aesculapian Club, and in 1824, he was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.
