Description
1968. King Jr., Martin Luther. Conscience for Change: Massey Lectures, 1968, presents a series of five lectures delivered by Martin Luther King Jr. for broadcast by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in 1967, offering a concentrated statement of his late career positions on civil rights, war, and social transformation. Delivered in the final year of his life, these lectures address the expanding scope of King's public thought beyond domestic civil rights to include direct criticism of the Vietnam War, arguing against its moral and political justification. King articulates the relationship between nonviolent protest and systemic change, while also emphasizing the role of youth activism in shaping social movements of the 1960s. The text situates civil rights within a broader critique of militarism and economic inequality, marking a significant development in his intellectual trajectory prior to his assassination in 1968. King Jr., Martin Luther. Conscience for Change: Massey Lectures, 1967. Toronto: CBC Publications, 1968. First edition, second printing. Original paperback binding. Issued shortly after the lectures were broadcast, this publication preserves King's arguments at a moment when his opposition to the Vietnam War drew both national attention and political controversy, reflecting divisions within the civil rights movement and the broader American public. The lectures extend themes present in his contemporaneous speeches, including the ethical obligations of democratic societies and the necessity of sustained nonviolent action in the face of institutional injustice. As a printed record of a major international broadcast, the work provides evidence of the transnational reach of King's ideas and their reception beyond the United States. Previous owner name to front cover; light handling wear; internally clean. Overall very good condition.

Description
Folio sheet, folded to 7-1/2" x 9-3/4." Written in neat ink manuscript on first two pages. Third page blank, docketed on page [4]. Very Good. Francis Strother Lyon [1800-1882], an Alabama lawyer and Democratic politician, wrote this letter to Governor Moore. Lyon had been a Whig Congressman in the 1830s and, having chaired the State Delegation to the 1860 Democratic Presidential Convention, remained a power in Alabama public affairs. Dr. William Cincinnatus Ashe [1815-1867], a Demopolis physician, received his appointment as Surgeon to the 11th Alabama Infantry on July 4, 1861, and acted in that capacity until he was relieved on June 21, 1862. On August 1, 1862 he became Surgeon-- and then Surgeon-in-Charge-- of the 1st Alabama Hospital in Richmond; and then Surgeon in Charge of Fort Morgan Hospital in Mobile Bay. Lyon reminds Moore that "The Act of Congress for the establishment and organization of a general staff for the Army of the Confederate state, authorizes the appointment of four surgeons with the rank of Major. You will remember that the friends of Dr. William C. Ashe of this place recommended him to you for the appointment of Surgeon to the Regiment to be raised under the Ordinance of this State. Now I am not informed as to your final determination... His friends feel a good deal of anxiety for his appointment as surgeon in the regular army either by the President or yourself." "In this part of the State we have not been clamorous for office- but we have been ardent and active in support of the cause of the South and you will concur with me in opinion that no portion of the State has been more unanimous in sustaining the measures which now promise so well to protect us against further inroads upon our rights, on the part of the North. I think therefore we are not asking too much in requesting the appointment of Dr. Ashe...

Paris: Au Bureau du Journal le Charivari, 1857. Thirty Amusing Wood-Cut Illustrations by Honoré Daumier DAUMIER, Honoré. Croquis Variés... Paris: Au Bureau du Journal le Charivari, [1857]. First edition. Small quarto (9 1/2 x 7 1/8 inches; 241 x 181 mm.). 16 leaves (including vignette title-page) all printed on one side only. Thirty amusing wood-cut illustrations. Some foxing throughout as is usual. Publisher's pale green printed wrappers with advertisements on rear. Complete with the publisher's glassine wrapper. Apart from the usual foxing a remarkable survival of this very fragile little book. First edition of this collection of plates by the famous illustrator, writer, sculptor. French lithographer and caricaturist, Honoré Daumier (Marseilles, February 26, 1808 - Valmondois, February 10, 1879), famous for his satirical cartoons targeting the political figures of the time. Daumier, from a very young age, demonstrated a propensity for drawing. In 1825 he was an apprentice of Beliard lithography, starting to collaborate, then, with the humorous newspaper "La Silhouette" demonstrating, right from the start, all his satirical verve. Among the first tables that he created, one caused a stir. In it, the caricaturist opposed the glorious Napoleonic tricolor to the restored Bourbon flag. Daumier's political commitment did not stop at paper but he took an active part in the revolutionary uprisings which overthrew the monarchy of Charles X in July 1830. During the uprisings he was also hit by a bullet. In 1835 he began his collaboration with the famous satirical newspaper directed by Charles Philipon and Gabriel Aubert "La Caricature" which gave him fame and visibility but also various problems which also led him to be imprisoned for a too ferocious cartoon towards Louis Philippe I of France , formerly Louis-Philippe, Duke of Orléans. Dumier in the following years became one of the most famous illustrators of France, collaborating with newspapers such as Le Charivari and La Chronique de Paris newspaper founded in 1836 by Balzac who also used the caricaturist for the images of some of his works and illustrating classic works and contemporary novels, achieving enormous success. Uncommon in this first edition.

New York: Farrar, Straus and Giroux. Near Fine in Near Fine dj. 1974. First Edition. Hardcover. [nice clean book, slight fading to cloth along top edges of covers, slight bumping to upper corners, and with the binding very slightly torqued (it will be fine after it sits up straight on your shelves); the jacket is slightly age-toned, with just a touch of wear along the top edge and a short closed tear at the top of the rear panel]. (B&W photographs) Rip-roaring memoir by the veteran director who began his career as an actor in the silent days (he played John Wilkes Booth in D.W. Griffith's THE BIRTH OF A NATION), but soon established himself as one of those "man's man" directors that Hollywood used to specialize in. (His career as an actor, which continued into the 1920s, was derailed when he lost his right eye in a freak car accident on location in Arizona in 1929.) He was just about the perfect "house director" for Warner Bros., where he spent much of his career and made enormous contributions to the drive and pace of studio product, particularly in the gangster and western genres, with films like THE ROARING TWENTIES, HIGH SIERRA, THEY DIED WITH THEIR BOOTS ON, DARK COMMAND, WHITE HEAT, etc. (The writing of this memoir, as well as William Wellman's, which appeared the same year, seems to have been prompted in part by the directors' participation in Richard Schickel's 1973 documentary/interview series "The Men Who Made the Movies.") This was a review copy, and has the original publisher's slip laid in at the front. ****NOTE that additional postage charges will be assessed for international shipping of this moderately heavy book; if this concerns you, please contact us for a shipping quote before placing your order. Description
New York: J.S. Ogilvie, 1892. Paperback. Good. Paperback. VERY SCARCE. Florence Warden (1857-1929) was a British actress and writer. She was born Florence Alice Price, but changed her name to Florence Warden for her stage career. She was also a prolific writer who wrote many novels under her stage name. Her first novel, The Wolf at the Door, was published anonymously in 1877. Overall she published over 120 novels over a nearly 50-year writing career as well as several plays. She became well-known for her novel The House on the Marsh (1884), which was also turned into a play. Strangely, "Down in the World" is not listed in her bibliography on any website, although the cover of this copy states "By Florence Warden, Author of 'The House on the Marsh.' This was issued as part of The Sunnyside Series, No. 59, and thus may have been overlooked by bibliographers. A very interesting and rare find for a collector of Victorian literature. Octavo. In original bluish-green wraps that are faded around edges and on spine. Covers as well as many pages are chipped at the edges, but text is not effected. Text block is browned and a bit brittle, apparently due to the quality of the paper in the early paperback printing. 201 pp.+ads Literature. LIT8/3072.

1870. Claim Concerning Title to Point San Jose in San Francisco [Trial]. Steinbach, R., Plaintiff. Flagg, John H., Attorney. Point San Jose: Supplementary Brief in Behalf of Claimants. N.p., [c.1870]. 10 pp. Octavo (9" x 5-1/2"). Self-wrappers, recto of first leaf and verso of terminal leaf soiled, crease to lower corner, internally clean. $20. * Only edition. Located near the entrance to the Golden Gate, Point San Jose was occupied by the U.S. military in 1863. The military claimed it was entitled to do this because the nation was in a state of war. It established a series of artillery batteries and continued to hold the land after the war. This irregular annexation was the basis of Steinbach's suit, which was first filed in 1866.
