Description
1/1/07. An extraordinary rarity, this is the first time we have ever seen on one sheet the signatures of these two leaders in World War I along with their QueensWorld War One was a war not merely of nations, but also one within a family. Britain and Germany may have been swept up in jingoistic fervor against one another, but what’s often forgotten is that the British monarch at the time, King George V, was the first cousin of Germany’s Kaiser Wilhelm II, both being grandchildren of Queen Victoria. George V’s father, Edward VII, was Victoria’s eldest son. He had become king upon his mother’s death in 1901, only ruling for a scant nine years until he himself died in 1910, when George V took over as King. George’s mother was Alexandra of Denmark. The German Kaiser was Queen Victoria’s grandson through Victoria’s daughter, also named Victoria, who had married Germany’s Kaiser Frederick III. In fact, Wilhelm’s ties with the British Royal Family were far more than a mere matter of genetics. As an infant, he’d been dressed up in full Highland garb for the wedding of his Uncle Bertie (aka, Edward VII) to Alexandra of Denmark. As a teenager, he’d been awarded the Order of the Garter by Queen Victoria, and he would even be present at her deathbed. Many chroniclers of this period have been fascinated by Wilhelm’s rocky relationship with his British relations, particularly noting his fierce animosity towards his Uncle Edward – dubbed ‘the old peacock’ and even ‘a Satan’ by Wilhelm. In the words of a historian, ‘the half-German side of him was at war with the half-English side’. Indeed, the Kaiser’s militaristic ambitions and strutting on the European stage may well have been partly fueled by what may be seen as his adolescent touchiness and almost oedipal desire to outdo the British in everything.Wilhelm II was married to Auguste Victoria, and George V to Victoria Mary (known as Mary).Wilhelm and Augusta paid a state visit to Britain in November 1907, arriving on November 11. The Emperor was met by a welcoming partly consisting of the Prince of Wales (later King George V), Lord Roberts, and the German ambassador. The group headed directly to Windsor from the coastal city to be hosted by King Edward VII. There was a royal gathering at Windsor on the 17th November, with members of Europe's royalty meeting at Windsor Castle. A photograph taken at the time shows Wilhelm with his British relatives.A few days before that, on November 13, Wilhelm and Augusta, and George and Victoria Mary, got together and all four signed this album leaf. Wilhelm has signed as William, an anglicized form of his name that he often used while in Britain, and his wife as Auguste Victoria; George has signed George P (for Prince of Wales, his position at the time) and his wife as Victoria Mary. In seven years these four would lead their peoples in World War I.It is an extraordinary rarity to find on one sheet the signatures of these two leaders in World War I along with their Queens. We’ve never seen it before.

Description
New York: McClure, Phillips & Co, 1904. First edition. Very Good. With the ownership signature of Charlotte Perkins Gilman ("C.P. Gilman"), her address (380 Washington St in Norwich, Connecticut, where she and her husband Houghton Gilman lived from 1922 to 1934), and the date ("Aug 8th 1931") in ink to front flyleaf. Octavo. Publisher's brown cloth titled in gilt. Inner hinges expertly closed. Some dampstaining, causing a few blemishes to cloth and some wrinkling to leaves in first half of the book. Still a Very Good example of an important book by one of America's leading women's rights activists, this copy having belonged to the author herself. Housed in a custom green quarter morocco case. In her introduction to this groundbreaking analysis on the relationship between economics and gender, Gilman (1860 - 1935) writes, "This book is a study of the economic processes of society, explaining the immediate causes of a large part of our human suffering, and suggesting certain simple, swift, and easy changes of mind by which we may so alter our processes so as to avoid that suffering and promote our growth and happiness." Maintaining that women carried equal intellectual capacity to men, she argues in Human Work that it is the "sexuo-economic oppression of women" and not biological inferiority that prevented women from participating in (and profiting from) certain types of work. "Accusing men of appropriating certain work as 'men's work' and masking the process as a biological locus rather than an exercise in power relations, Gilman asserts that men created an economic dependence that has prevented women from success in the workplace" (Kimmel & Moynihan). From this inequity, Gilman argues, springs suffering not only for women but for their families and society at large. Ultimately, the best course for improving overall social conditions is addressing the systemic sexual-economic inequities that hold women back from both contributing work to the community and benefiting from that work. Still considered one of the most important feminists of her day, Gilman was an ardent suffragist and advocate for women's rights to property, equal employment, and bodily autonomy. Gilman also broke ground as an author: her short story "The Yellow Wallpaper" (1892), inspired by her own experiences with postpartum depression, remains an iconic example of both feminist literature and psychological horror; similarly, her utopian novel Herland (first serialized in Gilman's feminist periodical The Forerunner) is a pioneering work of feminist speculative fiction. Gilman was also a prolific author on social science topics; Human Work explores many of the themes she began to develop in her earlier work Women and Economics (1898). Kimmel & Moynihan, introduction to the Altamira Press edition of Human Work (2005). Very Good.

Description
From the studio of Bender in New York. Ca. 252 x 202 mm. Risë Stevens was an "American mezzo-soprano of Norwegian origin. She sang with the New York Opera-Comique before becoming a pupil of Anna Schoen-René. Approached by the Metropolitan, she declined and sailed for Europe to study with Marie Gutheil-Schoder. She then made her formal operatic début in Prague in 1936 as Thomas' Mignon; she also sang with the Vienna Staatsoper and in Buenos Aires. Returning to the USA, she made her début with the Metropolitan on tour in Philadelphia in 1938 as Octavian, appearing a month later in New York as Mignon. She remained with the company until 1961 but also sang with other companies (including Glyndebourne in 1939 and, as Cherubino, 1955). Her warm, lyric voice can be heard on studio and off-the-air recordings of her Cherubino, Carmen, Mignon, Delilah and Octavian." Max de Schauensee and Alan Blyth in Grove Music Online.
