Description
Two volumes: [8]+viii+334 pages with engraved dedication in script, engraved supplemental pictorial title page and two plates; [6]+391+16 pages with engraved supplemental pictorial title page, appendix and one engraved plate. Octavo (8" x 6") bound in brown leather with gilt lettering to spine. Plates by J. Amillo. (Sabin 51215, Palau 183810) First edition. An important work on the Indians of Mexico, especially the Tarascans of Michoacan, written in Mexico by Benito Maria de Moxo and printed here by his nephew Juras Reales. "A valuable set of dissertations upon the natives and history of the New World, written by Don Benito Maria de Moxo, Archbishop of Charcas, whose papers fell into the hands of his nephew [Luis Maria de Moxo y de Lopez], and were printed by the latter under his own name without sufficient acknowledgement" - Sabin. The work contains fourteen essays by Benito Maria Moxo y Francoli written in 1805 in Michoacan where he served as auxiliary bishop from 1803 to 1805. The varied topics include Indian music; human sacrifice; Tarascan pre-Columbian painting; geometry; arithmetic and hieroglyphic writing; Black slavery in the Spanish colonies; and two essays on natural history. The appendix prints Moxo's 1807 speech in response to the British invasion of Buenos Aires. The fine engraved plates by J. Amillo include a scene of missionaries playing music for the Indians; a detailed representation of "Idolo Huitzilopochtli" (lively dancing Huitzilopochtli with mask, wearing feather headdress and holding a shield); and a stone idol on a broken base. A later edition appeared under the title Cartas Mejicanas in 1837Moxó y de Francoli (1763-1816), a controversial writer of the Spanish-American Enlightenment, was accused of collaborating with both monarchists and revolutionaries. His work is also marked by ambiguity, due to his loyalty to Spain and his sympathy for the original inhabitants of Mesoamerica, resulting in a complicated example of literary colonialism. This work explores Mesoamerican archaeology, astronomy, pictorial codices, human sacrifice, mathematics, comparative study of suicide among Native Americans and Europeans, pre-Columbian music, and other unusual anthropological subjects, such as the Tarascan painted manuscript discussed by Glass. Dismissed are the claims by Robertson and De Pauw that Amerindian culture is inferior, though the author rebukes Voltaire for minimizing the extent of human sacrifice and cannibalism among the Aztecs. He resolutely defends the Spanish conquest. Perhaps the most important result of the work was its contribution to an upsurge in interest in Mesoamerican archaeology and art. The copperplate engravings are handsome and well executed.Condition:Modern rebinding with new end papers. A very good set.

Manuscript material from the collection of Joaquin Garcia Icazbalecta. 1st edition.Luis Garcia Pimentel took over his father collection upon his death. How many volumes of manuscripts his library contained cannot be said with any degree of certainty. All we know is that at the end of his life his library was one of the finest and richest of private collection in Mexico. A typewritten list prepared in 1937 by his grandson, Juoaquin, shows that the collection contained at least eighty-seven volumes of manuscripts, only sixty-nine of which were listed by Federico Gomez de Orozco in his catalog in 1927. His son Garcia Pimentel picked up where his father left off, and continued publishing material from the collection. He began anther series of volumes Documentos Historicos de Mejico of which this is volume II in the series on the relationships between the bishoprics of Tlaxcala, Michoacan, Oaxaca and other locations from the original manuscripts.Condition:Rebound with original wrappers bound in. Description
1861. Archive of eight Civil War-date Congressional documents relating to the administration, financing, and logistical management of the Union war effort. Octavo pamphlets, 9.75" x 5.75", 1861-1864. The group comprises eight separately issued documents totaling 22 pages, each printed for Congressional distribution and addressing discrete military or legislative concerns arising from the conflict. The documents collectively illuminate the bureaucratic machinery sustaining the Union Army at the height of the war. Subjects include the transportation of troops, the recruitment of new enlistees to replenish depleted regiments, and the armament of fortifications-issues central to the rapid expansion of federal military infrastructure. Several items address the human cost of the war, including provisions for pensions to the widows of deceased chaplains and soldiers, underscoring the government's evolving responsibility toward military families. One document contains a detailed table listing the names, ranks, and compensation of aides-de-camp, including captains, lieutenant colonels, and majors, offering a rare printed accounting of mid-level command structure and remuneration during wartime mobilization. Other reports reveal the intersection of military necessity and civil administration: a resolution of the legislature of Maine critiques the inadequacies of the railroad route between New York and Washington-an infrastructural weakness with direct implications for troop movement and national security-while a transcription from the Paymaster General petitions Congress for increased salaries for the clerical staff of his bureau, reflecting the administrative strain placed upon federal departments by the scale of the conflict. A seven-page pamphlet transmitting a Senate resolution concerning gun contracts further documents the contentious procurement processes that defined wartime industrial expansion and federal contracting. Very good overall, with minor edge wear and light handling consistent with issued Congressional pamphlets. A cohesive and research-rich grouping of Civil War-era government documents, offering granular insight into the logistical, fiscal, and human dimensions of the Union war apparatus at a moment of unprecedented national crisis.

Description
Solana Beach CA: Santa Monica Press. Near Fine in Near Fine dj. (c.2011). First Edition. Hardcover. 1595800557 . [nice copy, only blemish to book is a faint stain on the bottom edge of the text block (the sort of thing you'd never have noticed if I hadn't pointed it out); the jacket shows just a touch of handling wear]. (B&W photographs, facsimiles) A different sort of movie-studio history, focusing not on the corporate history or even the films as such, but specifically "an illustrated history of the soundstages and outdoor sets where Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer produced many of the world's most famous films." A delight to browse through, the book makes the point vividly that the old Hollywood studios -- and M-G-M was the grandest of them all -- were virtually self-contained cities. It contains hundreds of photos of the major (and minor) buildings on the lot, shots of the standing sets (both in use and, occasionally, in forlorn and even derelict condition), interiors of departments, maps of the lot, etc. -- and while there are plenty of "production" shots (and glimpses of numerous movie stars), there's nary a "movie still" to be found. The emphasis throughout is very much on the physical plant, and on any given page you're much more likely to find yourself looking at a shot of the inside of the film laboratory, or the barber shop/newsstand, than of actors or actresses at work. Especially interesting is the appendix, "Films Shot on the Backlot," which lists hundred of films, categorized by the sets or streets utilized in their production -- "Small Town Railroad Depot," 47 productions; "Copperfield Street," 10 productions; "Esther Williams Pool," 40 productions; etc. Honestly, this book is SO much more interesting than those coffee-table studio histories ("The MGM Story," "The Paramount Story," etc.), which mostly consist of a long paragraph about each film and a (usually) tiny and uninteresting still. ***NOTE: Additional shipping charges for this heavy book may apply for non-U.S. customers, or for Priority Mail shipping within the U.S.; if this causes you concern, please inquire before placing your order.*** .
