Description
London: Printed by J. Flesher for Robert Horne, 1669. Full Description: MUN, Thomas. England's Treasure by Forraign Trade. Or, The ballance of our forraign trade is the rule of our treasure. London: Printed by J. Flesher for Robert Horne, 1669. Second edition. Small octavo (6 1/4 x 4 3/16 inches; 160 x 107 mm). [6], 186, 149-155, [1, blank] pp. Although the pagination jumps, book is complete and collates the same as the British Library copy. With Imprimatur on leaf A1V. Only one copy of the first has been at auction since 1977. Early half calf over marbled boards. Rebacked to style using original black morocco spine label, lettered in gilt. All edges speckled red. Board edges rubbed. Corners bumped. Spine label chipped. Previous owner's old ink signature on title-page. Top edge trimmed close throughout, occasionally touching headline. Some foxing and toning. Still a very good copy. Thomas Mun was a merchant and economic writer. "Mun's prominence as a guardian of the East India trade ensured him respect within governing circles, but his enduring fame stems from a work that appeared only twenty-three years after his death: England's treasure by forraign trade, or, The balance of our forraign trade is the rule of our treasure. Its exact date of compilation is uncertain, although most experts concur that its genesis lies with the great economic controversies of the 1620s and his campaign to justify the privileges of the East India Company. In common with other writers of the age, he encompassed a range of economic concerns in this work, most notably the decline of the fisheries, but the passages dealing with the balance of trade remained its chief attraction for seventeenth and eighteenth-century audiences. Many of its arguments were anticipated by his earlier writings, especially its anti-Dutch bias and its critique of Malynes, but its lasting influence was secured by Mun's brilliance in asserting the significance of the balance of trade in a systematic and coherent manner, which made it accessible to a very wide audience. Even though Mun warned against attempts to influence the flow of trade between countries, the tract has been widely seen as the bible of 'mercantilist thought', its arguments encouraging successive generations of politicians to introduce protectionist measures to ensure that the nation maintained a favourable balance of trade with other countries. In his professional capacity Mun had worked hard to educate ministers concerning the importance of foreign trade, but he was only too aware of the detrimental effects of international rivalry on overseas commerce. [After his death] It was left to his son John to publish his most famous work in 1664, who, without undue exaggeration, described his father as 'in his time famous among merchants, and well known to most men of business, for his general experience in affairs, and notable insight into trade' (England's Treasure, dedication). The subsequent success of England's Treasure paid testament to his abilities, with further editions in 1669, 1698, 1700, 1713, and 1755." (Oxford DNB). Einaudi. Goldsmiths'. Kress. PMM 146. HBS 68791. $7,500.

Description
1840. Full leather. Very Good +. Beautiful 1839-1840 handwriten album, with 22 hand-colored drawings of birds and flowers and 4 pencil drawings. On the one hand this is a commonplace book filled with Victorial poetry and prose, illustrated in vivid color. On the other hand, it's a bridge to the future of photographic representation, suggested by detailed architectural and landscape drawings, set against the backdrop of Birmingham, England, which played a pivotal, early role in the history of photography, producing the city's first daguerrotype in August 1839, just months after the technology came into being. (The city became a hub for technical innovation in the 1840s, merging chemical expertise with industrial silver plating. Several entries are written from the Winson Green House, owned by W.G. Alston, an early photography enthusiast. The house itself is profiled in an 1841 daguerrotype made by Elizabeth Stockdale Wilkinson and is thought to be the earliest surviving photograph of Birmingham. Two of the architectural sketches in the album are signed by Wilkinson, who had been experimentinmg with simple photography by using cyanide and ferns years before the dagueerotype was invented. Created at the time of photography's infancy, the album is a reminder of the role women played in its development. (Additional note: Joanna Apperley Meade wrote several of the album's entries from the Winson Green House. She married architect John Gill in 1840 and the album includes a poem titled The Bride. In 1842 the couple moved to Melbourne and their house bacame a popular meeting place for the city's poets, architects and artists). Very well-preserved to boot: Clean and VG+ to Near Fine in its custom, dark-red leather, with bright gilt-bordering at the panels and fine gilt-tooling to the spine's compartments. On top of everything else, also a handsome example of Victorial bookmaking.

Description
[Paris: Desgodets et Gérard, ca. 1913]. 175 x 130 mm. (6 7/8 x 5 1/8"). [68] leaves. Attractive contemporary marbled calf, covers with double gilt fillet borders, central panels semé with rows of blind-stamped fleurs-de-lys, raised bands, spine panels with single blind-stamped fleur-de-lys at center, blind lettering to one panel, turn-ins with floral blind roll enclosed by plain and dotted gilt rules, green watered silk endleaves, front free endleaf stamped with gilt initials "G. G." and the date "7 AOUT 1913," all edges gilt. BEAUTIFULLY PAINTED AND ILLUMINATED THROUGHOUT: Many one- or two-line initials in colors and/or gold, a number of large initials measuring three or more lines, each with different decoration but usually painted in colors on gold ground or gold on painted ground, EACH TEXT PAGE WITH A THREE-QUARTER OR FULL BORDER in varying Medieval styles, each design different from the next, all very colorful and incorporating numerous gilt embellishments, several inhabited by figures, AND WITH THREE ORIGINAL FULL-PAGE PAINTED MINIATURES, depicting the Crucifixion, the Marriage of Mary and Joseph, the Madonna and Child enthroned. Marriage vows personalized for Geneviève Lauras and Edouard Gauthier. Title page inscribed in ink: "A ma chère et bien aimée fille Geneviève ["To my dear and well-loved daughter Geneviève"] / Labrousse de Lascaux Lauras / 7 Août [August] 1913." A handful of negligible spots or smudges in the margins, but essentially A PRISTINE COPY with no signs of use. While the words of the text here are printed, this prayer book has been painstakingly illuminated and painted by hand in vibrant colors, and was obviously treasured by the young bride who received it as a wedding gift. Active in Paris from the late 19th century, the publishing firm Desgodets & Gérard specialized in lithographic printing like the present book. The text of the volume (which reproduced a contemporaneous calligrapher's hand) was printed in black & white, with the decorative borders and miniatures unfilled. These could then be painted and illuminated, either as commissioned by the purchaser of the book or, perhaps less often, as the owner saw fit through his or her own skilled brushes. The level of skill shown here strongly suggests that a professional did the work. Whatever the case, each leaf here contains a different style of border--from delicate hairline vines and gilt ivy leaves, to trompe-l'oeil designs and marginalia--inspired by a wide variety of Medieval and Renaissance manuscripts. Each page has a distinct personality and presents an array of richly hued palettes and much gold and silver illumination, adding greatly to the book's appeal and the viewer's sense of discovery. According to the inscription on the first leaf, the book was intended for a young woman named Geneviève on the occasion of her marriage on 7 August 1913. Geneviève evidently came from the Labrousse de Lescaux and Lauras families, and took as her husband Edouard Gauthier (thus the "G. G." initials, for "Genevieve Gauthier" on the silk endleaf). While chromolithographed prayer books are encountered with some regularity, a volume such as this, which has been completely colored and illuminated by hand (let alone one so beautifully finished and presented), is understandably more difficult to come by..

Description
New York: Covici-Friede, 1937. First edition. Near fine in a price-clipped, good or better dustwrapper with some chipping near the bottom of the front flap fold, and a large but faint dampstain. An uncommon play, adapted by Steinbeck from his own novel. Steinbeck's stage adaptation condenses his novella into a three-act tragedy ideally suited to theatrical presentation. The play's dialogue-driven format strips away narrative contemplation, rendering each character's thwarted ambitions through stark, unadorned exchanges that intensify the work's central themes: the impossibility of economic independence during the Depression, the profound isolation persisting within communal spaces, and the brutal incompatibility between human vulnerability and a system demanding complete self-sufficiency. The inexorable march toward Lennie's death demonstrates how certain lives become expendable when they cannot conform to society's demands.

Description
Paris: Marpon, 1884. ELEVENTH EDITION. With 8 color plates including 2 woodbury photographs of the moon, all with tissue guards, numerous black and white text illustrations and charts, many full-page. Original publisher’s pictorial cloth, worn; interior with some browning, otherwise a very good copy. Eleventh edition. Flammarion pursues his stand on astronomical pluralism, the belief that there exists numerous other worlds harboring life and, in particular, intelligent life. With maps, illustrations, photographs, graphs and diagrams, he creates a significantly scientific basis for the ability of life to flourish on other planets. For each of the planets in the solar system, he details the historical basis of the concept of alien life, as well as the geography, meteorology, and other scientific details of the planet. Flammarion (1842-1925) had a passion for astronomy from childhood and was largely self-taught. His appealing literary style made him the most important and successful scientific popularizer of his day, authoring more than seventy works, and despite his eccentric positions he probably did more to encourage public interest in astronomy than anyone else. He served for some years at the Paris Observatory and at the Bureau of Longitudes, but in 1883 he set up a private observatory at Juvisy (near Paris) and continued his studies, especially of double and multiple stars and of the Moon and Mars. He and another French writer, J. H. Rosny, were the first to popularize the notion of beings that were genuinely alien and not merely minor variants on humans and other terrestrial forms.
